INTERNATIONAL RADIATION PROTECTION ASSOCIATION WHAT IS IRPA? ABOUT IRPA…

IRPA’S MISSION

IRPA is an independent non-profi t association. Through national and regional Associate Societies and radiation protection professionals, IRPA promotes excellence in  radiation protection by providing benchmarks of good practices and enhancing professional competence and networking. IRPA  encourages the application of the highest standards of professional conduct, skills and knowledge for the benefi t of individuals and society.

IRPA strives to ensure that the highest standards of profes-sional conduct, skills and knowledge are applied for the benefi t of society, and that it is recognized by its members, stakeholders and the public as the international voice of the radiation protection profession in the enhancement of radiation protection culture and practices worldwide.

IRPA provides a medium whereby those engaged in radiation protection activities in all countries may communicate more readily with each other, and through this process advance radiation protection across the world. This includes such branches of knowledge as science, medicine, engineering, technology and law, to provide for the protection of people and their environment from the hazards caused by radiation, and thereby to facilitate the safe use of medical, scientifi c and industrial radiological practices for the benefi t of mankind. A major task for IRPA is to provide for and support regional and international meetings for the discussion of radiation protection. The IRPA international and regional congresses are the most important of these meetings. They have been held about every four years since 1966.

HOW TO JOIN IRPA

IRPA affi liation comes through membership in one of the IRPA Associate Societies. 52 national and regional radiation protection societies and associations are now members of the IRPA family. Infor-mation on establishing an IRPA Associate Society (AS) and a directory of existing Associate Societies can be found on the IRPA Web Site : www.irpa.net

RADIATION, RADIOACTIVITY AND RADIATION PROTECTION

Radiation is part of nature and is everywhere in our world, including in our bodies. Radiation can also be produced artifi -cially in a variety of activities such as medical radiography and therapy, energy production via nuclear sources, but also in luggage scanners and even in smoke detectors. Radiation provides important benefi ts to people every day but radiation exposure can be harmful to humans.

Some types of radiation, termed ionizing radiation, can expel electrons from the atoms in our body; x-rays being one example. Non-ionizing radiation, including sunlight, ultra-sound and radio waves such as emitted by cell phones, may affect our health through other mechanisms. Human beings need to be protected against unnecessary radiation exposure.

Specialists charged with protecting people against harmful effects of radiation and ensuring that radiation sources are used safely are radiation protection professionals, sometimes called health physicists. These specialists are responsible for development and application of the radiation measu-rement and control standards, and for implementing radiation protection principles that are needed for the safe use of radiation and radioactive sources.

Membership of IRPA comes through the 52 national and regional associate societies covering 67 countries that involve over 18,000 individual members worldwide. IRPA cooperates and interacts with many other international organizations, including IAEA, ICRP, ICRU, ICNIRP, UNSCEAR, WHO, ILO, NEA, and EC and professional bodies such as IOMP.

IRPA is the international voice of the radiation protection profession, providing a medium for communication and advancement of radiation protection worldwide.
