Organization Name s we contemplate the beginning of the year in January and look forward to the first quarter, a few items come to mind – some that occur each year and others unique to 2016. Our governance process is off to a flying start with all of our standing commiees organized at the beginning of the year and chaired by a Board Director. This year we have a robust group of members’/spouses acvely serving as part of our governance group, including five senior staff members. Our commiee composion reflects a mix of professional knowledge and experience along with representaon of all of our member’s interests and preferences. Addionally, the commiees and the Board discussed and seled on focus areas that we intend to pursue this year. As I noted last month, the overall focus and goal is for PVGC to be a premier golf club. January saw the passing of one of our longest tenured and beloved members at age 94, Mr. Willard Ames Monahan – whom every- one knew as “Spud”. Spud was a member since 1951, an accomplished golfer having won the club championship several mes and exceponally played four mes a week unl a few months ago. My personal recollecon of Spud was that he was universally well liked by all and had a deep affecon for PVGC and its well-being. Needless to say, a unique and treasured member of our club will be profoundly missed. We are moving forward in accordance with our Master plan to implement Phase II of the Course Improvement Plan (PCIP II). We have set up definive meengs with the city of Palos Verdes Estates to obtain all the required regulatory approvals by the beginning of March. The contractor to perform the work has been selected and we are prepared to finalize the scope of work and contract upon receipt of all approvals. Our intent is to communicate the enre project from start to finish and you will be informed of details and progress every step of the way. The Food & Beverage management team along with the House Commiee has launched a new innovave dinner menu, which intro- duces unique seasonal selecons while maintaining the tradional club classics. Having had an opportunity to sample some of these items, I can say that your taste buds are in for a treat! Our intent is to fine-tune this offering based on your feedback - so please be sure to provide your comments on sampling the new menu. Finally, the club was honored to host the 21 st Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge Women’s Collegiate Tournament, which just concluded as of the Barranca press me. The event aracted an outstanding field with many of the naon’s top women collegiate golfers, including the number one amateur in the world, resulng in some great golf and interacon with these outstanding athletes. Many thanks to the management team including Jim Gormley, Pat Gradoville, Peter Lam and Chef Milan for a very smooth execuon. As usual, Ron Defrees and his commiee of volunteers did an excellent job. —Marzi Mistry

s we contemplate the beginning of the year in January and look forward to the first quarter, a few items come to mind – some that occur each year and others unique to 2016. Our governance process is off to a flying start with all of our standing committees organized at the beginning of the year and

chaired by a Board Director. This year we have a robust group of members’/spouses actively serving as part of our governance group, including five senior staff members. Our committee composition reflects a mix of professional knowledge and experience along with representation of all of our member’s interests and preferences. Additionally, the committees and the Board discussed and settled on focus areas that we intend to pursue this year. As I noted last month, the overall focus and goal is for PVGC to be a premier golf club. January saw the passing of one of our longest tenured and beloved members at age 94, Mr. Willard Ames Monahan – whom every-one knew as “Spud”. Spud was a member since 1951, an accomplished golfer having won the club championship several times and exceptionally played four times a week until a few months ago. My personal recollection of Spud was that he was universally well liked by all and had a deep affection for PVGC and its well-being. Needless to say, a unique and treasured member of our club will be profoundly missed. We are moving forward in accordance with our Master plan to implement Phase II of the Course Improvement Plan (PCIP II). We have set up definitive meetings with the city of Palos Verdes Estates to obtain all the required regulatory approvals by the beginning of March. The contractor to perform the work has been selected and we are prepared to finalize the scope of work and contract upon receipt of all approvals. Our intent is to communicate the entire project from start to finish and you will be informed of details and progress every step of the way. The Food & Beverage management team along with the House Committee has launched a new innovative dinner menu, which intro-duces unique seasonal selections while maintaining the traditional club classics. Having had an opportunity to sample some of these items, I can say that your taste buds are in for a treat! Our intent is to fine-tune this offering based on your feedback - so please be sure to provide your comments on sampling the new menu. Finally, the club was honored to host the 21st Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge Women’s Collegiate Tournament, which just concluded as of the Barranca press time. The event attracted an outstanding field with many of the nation’s top women collegiate golfers, including the number one amateur in the world, resulting in some great golf and interaction with these outstanding athletes. Many thanks to the management team including Jim Gormley, Pat Gradoville, Peter Lam and Chef Milan for a very smooth execution. As usual, Ron Defrees and his committee of volunteers did an excellent job.

As I write this, we have just completed the 2016 Northrup Grumman Regional Challenge. Aside from everyone taking credit for the incredible weather, the true credit for an outstanding event lies with several people. Pat and his crew had the course in fantastic conditions. Jim and his team coordinated a very smooth and seamless operation. The food and beverage operations led by Peter Lam and Chef Milan all performed without any hiccups. Ron Defrees and all his committee are the true volunteers that make this event so special! And finally since everyone erroneously thinks that I am responsible for the accommodations at Terranea, I will take credit for the weather. All in all it was an event that we can all be proud of! We are in the processes of putting the finishing touches on out new dinner menu which will change quarterly. We are doing exten-sive training on the menu with our culinary team producing each item for tasting by the staff along with extensive preparation descriptions. Everyone is very excited about this new menu and I truly feel that this the next step in the enhancement program for our Food and Beverage programs for 2016.Be sure to check out the new wine list and wines by the glass menu compiled by Laura Stevenson, our sommelier. She has completed her revamp of the list and has entered it into competition with the Wine Spectator for recognition. We should get the results in May. Laura is working on the schedule for the Wine dinner program for this year. Six of these events are scheduled and will begin on March 3rd with Trinitas Cellars. Others on tap include Jordan and Flowers Cellars amongst others. These events have limited seating so watch closely to the calendar and for Laura’s Blog on the website for more information. We hope that the physical enhancements in the bar area are to your liking, we are well aware that the new community table has caused some happy members to create a little more noise than the rest of the diners like. We have a two phased approach to address this. First we are installing glass in the two openings where there are currently drapes to block the noise, and further we are enhanc-ing the ceiling that will include the sound absorbing panels installed in the ball room to hopefully get the noise level under control. Further enhancements to the Montemalaga room and Terrace are underway to be completed by April 1. This will allow the member-ship to enjoy these beautiful areas along with the spectacular views to a greater extent. As I mentioned at our General Staff kick off meeting last month, 2016 is the year of enhancements at the Palos Verdes Golf Club. I look forward to seeing you on your next visit to your club!

Our little pal “El Nino” may have been noticeably missing last month, but our members’ golf games were not, as many found ways to hit great shots and card some nice rounds in January. We’ll start with a couple great rounds. Greg Hagerman carded an 81, which was the best score he’s shot in some time. Clark Margolf had a sweet 44 on the back, his lowest score ever on that 9. We also had some great shots to report last month. Jim Allison knocked his wedge into the hole for a sweet eagle, on #17. Greg Hagerman hit a 4-iron into the hole on #7, for a smooth eagle. Lesley Luk hit an 8 iron on #17, which found the bottom of the cup for a sweet deuce!! Finally, it’s not too often that a great shot or round gets past me, and it’s even more rare for me to miss a hole-in-one. That’s’ why I must apologize to Frank Clark (A fellow Syracuse fan to boot!!) for not mentioning his hole-in-one on #8. Frank hit a perfect 7-iron into the hole for a great ace!! Great shot Frank!! Keep Shooting for the Stick,

The University of Washington Women’s Golf Team set a new tournament record of 858 – six over par for the 12 total rounds – in winning the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge by 6 shots over Alabama and 11 shots ahead of Florida. Four Washington players finished in the top 15 of individuals in a performance, which was described by their Coach Mary Lou Mulflur as “a game changer for our women’s golf program”. The real game changer for this 21st year of the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge came on the 15th and 16th holes when Wenyung Keh made a Hole-in-One on 15 and Julianne Alvarez followed with an Eagle on 16 moments later to give Washington a commanding lead.

The individual Championship was won by Monica Vaughn of Arizona State with a 3 round total of 209, 4 under par, including a final round new tournament low of 65. Monica made 7 birdies and a single bogey on hole number 11 and finished with pars on holes 3 and 4 in the third round shotgun start format. Janie Jackson of Alabama and Charlotte Thomas of Washington tied for second at -1. Ms. Vaughn gave an endearing acceptance speech thanking the PVGC Members, Volunteers, her Host Family, Karen and Bob Mabli, the PVGC Staff, and especially her teammates for their support. Ms. Vaughn teared up as she finished her short talk and it was a pleasure to see such emotion from a fine student athlete.
