Message from the Executive Director

2019 was a significant year for our organization, and proved to be a test of our capacity, systems and resilience. With the Executive Director absent on a one year study leave in the United States, MAYEIN’s phenomenal team drove the entire year’s strategies, targets as well as implementation of different programs of the organization. As a result, the obvious highlight of the year 2019, for us at MAYEIN, is the growth of staff capacity, improvement in the day to day systems, and indeed our record of successful collaborations with several unique organizational partners Oyo and Lagos states- such as The American Corner -Ibadan, Improved Literacy & Development for Africa Initiative (ILADFAI), She.Learns.Here, Steering for Greatness, Campus Labs, Sozo Networks etc.

Over the years our goal of empowering young people with skills for positive impact and future readiness, has led to us focusing our efforts on education inclusion for girls and improved education quality through support for teachers and schools; a range of positive youth development programs including offering critical 21st century skills trainings, vast mentoring opportunities and information resources to young people. We have also designed several programs to provide practical youth civic education and future civic participation - such as our flagship Participatory Budgeting (PB) Program in schools. In 2019, despite numerous challenges and a harsh (some might even say hostile) economic clime, MAYEIN deepened its footprints on the youth landscape in Nigeria by expanding our Bookathon event into Lagos city, launching the Oyo e-Literacy Project, increasing our network of trained peer educators on girls rights, promoting girls in STEM careers, and implementing the Kolibri global E-learning project by training more than 250 teenagers across formal and non-formal settings on how to conduct open source e-learning as well as how to use social media safely, ethically and responsibly.

Looking back at our hard work in 2019, the parallel and still growing achievements of leveraging all our internal strengths, external partners and local resources, which has laid a solid base for our future, I am confident in MAYEIN’s ability to make an even greater contribution to advancing all young peoples’ wellbeing, inclusion and positive impact in Nigeria in the next few years. My call to action today is simple...we must now move from complaining about youth to commit to investing in youth instead. Investing in inclusive qualitative education, narrowing the skills gap, promoting access to financial services and capital, providing positive mentoring, enabling digital inclusion are just a few of the commitments you can make towards ensuring positive youth development today. Young Peoples’ positive development is everyone's business!

About MAYEIN

Mentoring Assistance for Youths and Entrepreneurs Initiative (MAYEIN) is an Incorporated                     Trusteeship with registration No: CAC/IT/NO 52811. The Organization is governed by an 8                         member Board of trustees. For 8 years MAYEIN has been implementing a compendium of solid                             literacy, e-Literacy and Positive Youth Development (PYD) programs reaching over 5000                     educationally disadvantaged children and youth across poor communities and public school                     settings in Nigeria's South-West region. Currently MAYEIN’s mobile library has over 800 users                         across 3 communities in Oyo State. In addition MAYEIN is currently an implementing partner of                             ‘Kolibri’, a global E-learning project supported by Google, for children across formal and                         non-formal settings. Through a collaboration with Youth Hub Africa and the Malala Foundation,                         MAYEIN has engaged over 3000 adult gatekeepers (parents, community heads and religious                       leaders) across South-west Nigeria, in a series of girls’ education campaigns. These campaigns                         have resulted in over 700 formal pledges by adult gatekeepers to keep girls in school. MAYEIN                               has also developed separate Peer Educator manuals on Digital Literacy, Girls’ Rights and                         Participatory Budgeting (PB) for High school students.

Our Programmes

Under our education focus, in 2019 we organized a compendium of formal literacy and digital                             literacy programs for children and young people across schools and community settings - such as                             mobile library services, mobile computer classrooms, Book-a-thon competitions, and democracy                   clubs. We also provided continuous professional development assistance through building                   professional development plans and organizing periodic training for school teachers.

1. Annual City Bookathons

To commemorate the World Book Day on April 23rd, MAYEIN organized 2 separate                         marathon book reading events for teenagers in Ibadan and Lagos cities in Nigeria. These                           'Book-a-thons' are designed to promote literacy and a vibrant reading culture among                       teenagers. Through reading, young people’s knowledge and creativity is fostered and they                       become equipped with the tools to transform self, community and the nation.

Ibadan, 2019

On April 23rd 2019, MAYEIN organized the second City Book-a-thon edition in Ibadan, to                           commemorate the World Book Day. The event was held in collaboration

with Nigeria’s foremost bookstore ‘BookSellers’ - which has branches in major cities                       across the Country. Young people between the ages of 13 and 18 across Oyo State                             attended the event. The program was 100% inclusive and recorded gender, religious and                         socio-economic diversity (with 50% of our attendees from public schools and the other                         50% from private schools).

Lagos, 2019

Still on April 23rd 2019, MAYEIN organized the first ever edition of its bookathon event in                               Lagos State. Working in collaboration with Lagos-based NGO Improved Literacy &                     Development for Africa Initiative (ILADFAI), the bookathon had 38 teenage participants,                     who read for two hours uninterrupted. Other features of the Event included 4 brief master                             classes for budding writers, separate Authors Meet and Greet sessions, games and a                         special Keynote address by the Managing Director of Kachifo Ltd, Farafina Books.

2. ‘Girls Without Borders’

MAYEIN trained secondary school students across 4 schools to become peer educators on                         girls’ rights through a program called "Girls Without Borders". In 2019 we grew the                           network of peer educators to a size of 200 students in Oyo State. These activities have led                                 school children to gain improved knowledge of their rights and access to critical                         information and legal help services through the National Human rights’ Commission in                       Oyo State.

3. Oyo e-Literacy Project

Every School Child in Oyo State has a Right to digital skills

Over 1 million children enrolled in public high schools in Oyo State, Nigeria, do not receive practical ICT training

and so they are not prepared for today’s formal systems or the future of work which are technology driven. In

2019, MAYEIN received formal approval from the Oyo State Ministry of Education to commence the Oyo

e-Literacy Project in Public Secondary Schools and empower students with essential digital skills required for

today and the future, through practical ICT training.

How the Oyo e-Literacy Project Works:

The ‘Oyo e-Literacy Van’ is a mobile ICT classroom owned                   and managed by MAYEIN, which currently houses 15               internet-enabled computers, 20 tablets and 2 effective

  7

trainers who administer practical training using a friendly manual. This mobile ICT classroom                         visits public secondary schools in Oyo State, Nigeria, once a week, to deliver hourly practical                             training sessions to students on the basics of how to use computers and the internet,                             empowering them with digital skills for learning and innovation.

What our Baseline Assessment showed:

In a baseline study conducted across 5 secondary schools in Oyo State and involving 200 respondents

in senior secondary school, our organization made the following findings:

- over 95% of the respondents, were not familiar with how to operate a computer device at all

and only 67% recognized the ‘power’ button;

- Female students (representing 55%

of participants) were reportedly as

eager as their male counterparts to

acquire digital skills and enjoy digital

inclusion;

  8

- None of the respondents had ever used a Word processor to create, edit or save a file on

a computer;

- None of the respondents were familiar with how to use powerpoint to make a

presentation;

- Only 2 respondents knew how to use Google search engine on the internet ;

In 2019 the Project began training 150 students across the

following secondary schools in Oyo State: Methodist Grammar

School, Immanuel College High School, St. Louis Grammar School

and Ojoo High. MAYEIN’s ICT Training Manual is a child friendly

manual which was developed specifically for the easy

understanding of young school children. MAYEIN has

employed it in past projects with proven learning outcomes.

Our training pedagogy is built around the theory of learning by

doing rather than by instruction. Some of the topics covered in

the Training include - Introduction to Desktop and Word

Processors (Microsoft); How to save, organize and print files; Conducting Internet Browsing & Searches;

Creating Powerpoint slides; How to use social media safely and ethically etc.

4. Teachers Development Assistance Programme (T-DAP)

We offer a high impact Continuous Professional Development (CPD) Programme for every                       21st Century School Teacher. School teachers are empowered with new knowledge, best                       classroom practices, resource guides and communities of practice that help improve their                       classroom methods and real learning outcomes of students. Each workshop is individually                       designed and customized for schools, incorporating the school mission, vision and values.

Currently MAYEIN’s mobile library has over 800 users across 3 communities. In                         addition MAYEIN’s mobile library is an implementing partner of ‘Kolibri’, a global                       E-learning project supported by Google, for children across formal and non-formal                     settings.
