Abhivyakti
Foundation
We are a team of young
social activists from different streams and professions with a passion
to social engineering. The team is inspired with Gan-
dhian thought of develop-ment and we catalyze participation of poorest
communities in development mainstream.
The organization has its roots in the non formal
group Abhivyakti (meaning
- expressions) that was started in the year 1998 by interested youth for social cultural activities to fill
up the cultural void in Giridih which has glorious past of its rich cultural heritage. The initial activities of organization revolved round cultural
reconnaissance through socio-cultural events like “Srijan Mahotsav”, “Natya Mahotsava”, Book Fair
etc. and gradually increased its involvement with development mainstream that led to formal regis-tration of this groups as Abhivyakti Foundation in
the year 2002. Since its inception AVF has been a youth cadre and focus on active involvement of
youth for development of self and society.
Guiding Principles: Abhivyakti Foundation is motivated by the Gandhian philosophy, and it follows the endoge-
nous theory of development. We believe in the inherent values and bottom up planning for the development of lowest sections of society. This requires active involvement of local
communities in the participatory process for development.
Our Mission
To aware people and mobilize self initiatives based on local available resources for
sustainable development , and right balance over generations.
Our Vision

Food and Nutrition Security
Jharkhand comes next only to Madhya Pradesh in terms of nutritional health of children as per NFHS-3
reports. Food and Nutrition Security has been one of the most crucial challenges in the state of
Jharkhand for overall well being. Under Fight Hunger First Initiative (FHFI) in Devipur block of Deoghar
district Abhivyakti Foundation is facilitating the right based approach to improve four pillars of food se-
curity viz. access, availability, absorption and sustainability.
The major approaches to improve food and nutrition security under FHFI are—
• Improving availability of nutrition at household level through kitchen
gardens, key hole gardens nutrition gardens at schools and
anganwadi centres and Linking Agriculture with Nutrition and
Natural resources (LANN).
• Improving access of mother and child population to food services
and supplementary nutrition through mass education and commu-
nity based monitoring using community score cards.
• Promoting health seeking behavior through Positive Deviance Hearth
Sessions, counseling of mothers on Infant & Young Child Feeding (IYCF), referral to MTCs and follow
up using visual work plan for SAM children and WASH initiatives.
Action research based intervention on Uncultivated Food in Pakur and Godda districts has identified 124
local food varieties that have been significant part of food basket for the paharia community. AVF is
working in these areas to mobilize local communities to conserve commons and uncultivated food for
their food sovereignty.
Mother and Child Health
To improve access of mothers and children to health services AVF interventions focus on—
Involving youth and community volunteers in child growth tracking
Activating Village Health and Nutrition Day with community mobilization
Promoting ANC / PNC services with examination tables and curtain support at
anganwadi centres.
Promoting Routine Immunization through “My Village—My Home” tool and
Health Outreach Camps in uncovered areas.
Sustainable Agriculture & Livelihood
Sustainable Integrated Farming System (SIFS) initiatives of AVF aims to diversify farm production and
reduce external input costs of small holding farmers by encouraging usage of farm wastes from one sub
-system to other as farm inputs, thus making agriculture viable and profitable for them. Under SIFS
approach AVF promotes following interventions in field—
• Promotion of fallow cultivation
• Farm designing and planning of inter-resource link-
ages
• Sub-system flow like Rice-duck-Azolla, Pond-duck-
fish-vegetable cultivation, shadow cultivation etc.
• Common Facility Centres for value chain of local
produces like turmeric, gram, rice etc.
Innovative Solutions—Rice parboiler
Rice parboiler is a design innovation by AVF to
the rice parboiling process. This low cost fuel
efficient model saves 40% of fuel consump-
tion and 60% of grain loss compared to tradi-
tional karha system. Even a single woman can
handle alone the rice parboiling process at
Youth Empowerment The organization relies on youth voluntarism for social action through its two wings Abhivyakti Artists’
Association for Generations (AAAG) that was founded to promote music, theatre and fine arts for social
advocacy and Abhivyakti Youth Association (AYA) that looks after volunteer drives. In this process we
have been working with local youth to build them as change agents. AVF provides them necessary in-
puts to build up their personality, orientation and capacity. While working with them we usually engage
them to challenges in form of smaller projects for development of educational materials, mass cam-
paigns and focused drives. We encourage them to explore the ideas with a range of reference and
some study materials from our library, interview of different social groups and peer based learning
process. This helps them synthesize the ground realities and build up their own perception and respond
to the issues of social concern. The involvement of youth not only associate them with the local history,
culture, values and ethos but also help them to keep away from substance abuse, emotional distur-
bances and builds up self confidence and esteem and contributing to society as active citizens. Youth
engagement in Kaam Mango Abhiyan and other mass campaigns have better outreach and experiences.
Art & Culture
Giridih Book Fair-cum-Cultural Festival is a regular event organized by Abhivyakti Foundation. Apart
from promoting reading habit and book culture this 10 days carnival has more than 40 events involving
children from local schools and provides them a district level platform to nurture their hidden potentials
and creativity. This event also provides a platform to folk arts and local talents.
Child Rights
The child right initiatives of Abhivyakti Foundation focus on community sensitization about child rights.
A local movie “UDDAN” on Child Rights and trafficking made by AVF is a good resource for the purpose
and highly appreciated by etv and other channels. The child rights focus of AVF involves life skill
education, early marriage control and education of children from Birhor primitive tribes.
Education
AVF works with local schools, community and School Management Committees to improve their
performance and better access of children to Right to Education. These initiatives cover engagement of
youth volunteers in regularizing services at schools, piloting of school nutrition garden and WASH
facilities at schools. We also facilitate activity based learning and extra curricular activities to reinforce
the learning process among children. Recently we have initiated a mobile based school tacking system
for school based planning and status of Right to Education in Bengabad block of Giridih district as a
pilot.
