Cross-national variations in cultural style
Individual organizations have their own unique cultures.
What unfolds in any organization is a reflection of what is in people‟s mind.
While some corporate cultures may be uniform and strong, others are often fragmented by the presence of subcultures.
Organizations rests in the shared meanings that allow people to behave in organized ways.

Defining „CULTURE‟
Dr. Sombat Kusumavalee
11
Culture is the way of life of a group of people. (foster, 1962)
Culture is that complete whole which includes knowledge, beliefs, arts‟ laws, morals, customs and any capabilities and habits acquired as a member of a society. (Tylor, 1977)
The collective programming of the mind which distinguishes the members of one human group from another… the interactive aggregate of common characteristics that influence a groups response to its environment. (Hofstede, 1980)
Defining „CULTURE‟
Dr. Sombat Kusumavalee
12
Culture is a set of learned core values, beliefs, standard, knowledge, morals, laws, and behaviors shared by individuals and societies that determines how an individual acts, feels, and views oneself and others. (Mitchell, C., 2000)

Organization is viewed as a collectivity to which
employees belong, rather than just a workplace
comprising separate individuals.
The collaborative spirit, interdependence, shared
concerns, and mutual help.
Employee life-long commitments to their
organizations.
Authority relations are often paternalistic and
highly traditional and deferential.
Strong links between welfare of the individual, the
corporation, and the nation.

Geert Hofstede ‘5 cultural dimensions’
“ Individualism: The degree to which action is taken for the benefit of the
individual or the group.
“ Power Distance: The degree to which inequality or distance between those in
charge and the less powerful (subordinates) is accepted.
“ Uncertainty avoidance: focus on the level of tolerance for uncertainty and
ambiguity within the society ” unstructured situations.
“ Masculinity: The degree to which we focus on the society reinforces, or does not
reinforce, the traditional masculine work role model of male achievement, control,
and power.
“ Time Orientation: The degree to which we embrace values oriented toward the
future, such as perseverance and thrift, or values oriented toward the past and
present, such as respect for tradition and fulfilling social obligations.29

Adopt the role of anthropologist
One of easiest ways of appreciating the nature of culture and subculture is simply to observe the day-to-day functioning of a group or organization to which one belongs, as if one were an outsider.
35Dr. Sombat Kusumavalee
Very different cultures being created through different styles of corporate leadership
The attitudes and visions of top corporate staff tend to have a significant impact on the ethos and meaning system that pervade the
whole organization.

The concept of culture
„Culture is an intrinsically abstract concept
that integrates and explains the shared overt
and visible behavioral rituals, beliefs, and values of a group.‟
Edgar H. Schein (1996)
44Dr. Sombat Kusumavalee
‘One cannot understand culture without looking for the roots, the nutrients, and the principles of growth that explain the
surface phenomena one sees in the organization.’
45Dr. Sombat Kusumavalee
Edgar Schein (1992)Culture is…
…a pattern of shared assumptions that the group learned as it solved its problems of external adaptation and internal integration, that has worked well enough to be considered valid and, therefore, to be taught to new members as the correct way to perceive, and feel in relation to those problems.

The Cultural Web, developed by Gerry Johnson
and Kevan Scholes in 1992, provides one such
approach for looking at and changing your
organization's culture. Using it, you can expose
cultural assumptions and practices, and set to
work aligning organizational elements with one
another, and with your strategy.
Elements of the Cultural Web
The Cultural Web identifies six interrelated
elements that help to make up what Johnson and
Scholes call the "paradigm" - the pattern or
model - of the work environment. By analyzing
the factors in each, you can begin to see the
bigger picture of your culture: what is working,
what isn't working, and what needs to be
changed. The six elements are:54
Dr. Sombat Kusumavalee
Cultural web
Dr. Sombat Kusumavalee55
Stories -The past events and people talked about inside and
outside the company. Who and what the company chooses to
immortalize says a great deal about what it values, and
perceives as great behavior.
Rituals and Routines -The daily behavior and actions of
people that signal acceptable behavior. This determines what
is expected to happen in given situations, and what is valued
by management.
Cultural web
Dr. Sombat Kusumavalee56
Symbols -The visual representations of the company
including logos, how plush the offices are, and the formal or
informal dress codes.
Organizational Structure -This includes both the
structure defined by the organization chart, and the
unwritten lines of power and influence that indicate whose
contributions are most valued.
Cultural web
Dr. Sombat Kusumavalee57
Control Systems -The ways that the organization is
controlled. These include financial systems, quality systems,
and rewards (including the way they are measured and
distributed within the organization.)
Power Structures -The pockets of real power in the
company. This may involve one or two key senior executives,
a whole group of executives, or even a department. The key
is that these people have the greatest amount of influence on
decisions, operations, and strategic direction.
การคนหา shared mental models ไมใชเรองงายๆ เพราะ
มนเปนส งซอนเรนและมกจะ taken for granted
To decipher a cultural paradigm at this deeper
level generally requires the joint efforts of an
outsider participant observer working with one
or more insiders who are willing to try to
explain observed anomalies or inconsistencies
by exploring their own assumptions.
Joint inquiry efforts can bring the tacit
assumptions to the surface.58Dr. Sombat Kusumavalee
