Our keynote speaker Rtn. Arjan Singh was introduced by Rtn. Prof. Dr. I.S. Dua. Rtn. Arjan Singh is a well known Rotarian and an excellent communicator. Arjan did MA in English from Panjab University in 1967 when he was just 20 years old and also served in the university as a lecturer. He also had a teaching assignment in a university in USA. Finally he joined his family business, Bhagat Singh & Co., a petrol pump on Madhya Marg, Sector 17, Chandigarh. He is married to Parveen, and their 3

Rtn. Arjan Singh and R’ann Parveen visited Patna during the 350th Birth anniversary of Guru Gobind Singh. Arjan shared with us a beautiful audio visual presentation of this amazing event which was very meticulously planned and extremely well executed by Govt. of Bihar. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar took personal interest to ensure that it would be a grand success. His interest in the event had kept his administration on its toes. From cots to the langar arrangements and security, the CM examined everything personally.

It was a memorable experience for lakhs of devotees from Punjab, other parts of India and abroad. Three massive tented cities were set up in the city. Detailed arrangements were made for food and transport. Parking sites were identified in advance. Water and electricity was ensured and hundreds of mobile toilets installed. Around Patna Sahib roads were widened, houses repainted, and for smoother connectivity a new flyover was constructed.

The Patna Ghat railway station was reopened. New electricity poles were erected, along with new wiring. Hundreds of solar powered streetlights were put up. The entire city was cleaned up and given a new look.

Special attention was given to security. Some 200 new CCTV cameras were put into operation. These preparations were supervised by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on a daily basis. In the lead up to the Utsav, there was hardly a day when he did not personally inspect the ongoing work, or devote time to planning the event. His eye for detail was relentless, including, for instance, the provisioning of heaters for devotees to ward off the winter cold. This is what illustrates how to organize mass events.

The Chief Minister availed the services of 1970 batch sikh IAS officer Mr. G.S. Kang, who was Chief Secretary of Bihar in 2005, and requested him to oversee the preparations. He also made another serving sikh IAS officer, Principal Secretary in Bihar Government Ms. Harjot Kaur responsible for the massive arrangements.

There was no political motive behind planning this mega event as there are only few thousand Punjabis in Bihar. The arrangements received high appreciations from leaders of all parties including the prime minister who had visited Patna for this grand birth anniversary of Guru Gobind Singh.

Mrs. Asha Kumari Jaswal, Mayor of Chandigarh joins our Swachhta campaign

At Plaza in Sector 17, Chandigarh on 22/1 it was the worst experience of our so far held road shows. It was a pathetic sight and disgrace to city beautiful. Our Interactors, R’ann Sudha Puri, Rtn. Ashok Puri, Rtn. R.K Jain and Rtn. Salil Chopra did some serious emotional talking to educate the vendors and the public. The Mayor of Chandigarh Mrs. Asha Kumari Jaswal commended our work and a Joint Secretary of UT Govt started supervising the cleaning operations. People appreciated the efforts of Rotary for spreading the message of Swachh Bharat.

'Swachh School Hamara ' at Govt Sr Sec School, Pipli town, Manimajra, Principal Mrs. Ramneek who herself is true ambassador of cleanliness invited Rtn. Salil Chopra to speak to entire school, during the morning assembly before a gathering of

nearly 1400 students, on cleanliness and how can they get involved in Swachh Bharat movement. He also spoke on use of toilet, hand wash, personal hygiene, clean drinking water and saving water.
