Agenda
Background
Why Established Data Management Unit ?
Key objectives of Data Management Unit
Data Management Strategy
Ongoing activities
Future plans and Way forward
Background
Traditional method of data generation, collection, reporting, and publishing did not allow to share the data effectively on which the research articles were based.
Voluminous research data generated in the last 4 decades at ICRISAT were restricted to scientists’ computers, files or other storage devices due to lack of formalized process of automated data flow for aggregation, preservation and Sharing.
These huge datasets can serve as key assets to ICRISAT and its partner organizations for future research activities.
Also there is increasing requirement from donor funding agencies, to include data management strategies to ensuring public funded research data are shared with public and are available to re-use for public good.
Why Established DMU?
The Need
• Understanding the value of these research data as valuable asset, ICRISAT recognized the need to establish separate unit to handle data management activities.
Goal
• With a goal to aggregate research datasets that are produced across the institute and organize them efficiently in a “central data repository” with structured access to individual datasets.
Function
• Support the scientific community at ICRISAT with innovative tools, techniques and infrastructure support for better data management, aggregation, sharing and preservation.
Key objectives of DMU
Develop a user friendly suite of work-flows and
protocols for data management
Develop methods to aggregate and preserve
the data
Capacity Building and Awareness Creation
Support in Requirement Gathering to procure/design data
analysis system
Global outreach

• Coordinate on successful implementation of aWhere Data management platform.
Ongoing DMU Activities…cont.
Village Development Studies in South Asia (VDSA)
• Supported in Software Requirement Specifications (SRS) requirement gathering
• Technical advisory to VDSA data warehouse project team.
• Testing VDSA Application for suitability
• Ensuring smooth functioning of application
1. Integrate socio–economic data into warehouse system 2. Farm Field level information to the users 3. Online Analytical Reports 4. Village Dynamics Database
Ongoing DMU Activities…cont.
Tablet based Data Collection tools
• Implementing tablet based data collection & reposting system using open source and proprietary software.
• Helping scientist to adopt appropriate tools for data collection, aggregation and real –time transfer to central repository.
• Capacity building and training on use of tablet mediated tools.
Ongoing DMU Activities…cont.

• Implementation of Paper less Data Management Application for LSU
• Provide consistent online paperless on-boarding process & data management system.
Development of Data Management Unit Website
• Knowledge repositories of ICRISAT Data Management activities
• Share best practices, case study and information with global community about ICRISAT initiatives on Data Management
Ongoing DMU Activities…cont.
Tablet based Data Collection tool – Krishi Gyan Sagar (KGS)
Krishi Gyan Sagar (KGS) Innovations in linking research-extension-farmers-markets
Modules (Farm to Fork) in both tablet/mobile app as well as web app Experimentation is in progress in three experimental hubs located in Mahabubnagar
& Ananthapur districts of AP and Bhoochetana districts in Karnataka. Each experimental hub is unique and experiments are carried out with different set
of partners to test the hypothesis.
Way forward
Integration of Data Management Tool/ Repositories
Automation of CRP Work Plan repository
Integration of ‘’ R “software and GIS features in ICRISAT Dataverse
Implement and share best practices on data management in closed coordination to CG Centers
Organize capacity building and training programs on data management activities
Thanks!
