What happens to our skin at different ages?Taking care of your skin from an early age is an investment and will determine how you will look in the years to come. 20s In our 20s the skin is still quite active and the primary concern is about achieving healthy balanced skin and often dealing with the blemishes, clogged pores and breakouts that are still occurring. Our lifestyle at 25 may also give us some skin upsets with late nights, stressful studies or even a bit too much partying, smoking or sun. 30s In your early 30s, your pores and your skin hydration are the first signs that give you away. Dilated pores and rough skin make you look older even before any wrinkles appear. Wrinkles become more prominent around the eye area. 40s While crow’s feet wrinkles are influencing the age you look when you’re in your late 30’s, the wrinkle between your eyebrows (a.k.a. Glabellar wrinkle) is the biggest giveaway sign in your early 40’s! Whereas it is all about wrinkles from 35 to 45 years old, uneven skin tone and age spots are significant signs of ageing from 45 years old onwards. 50s When in your late 50s, the lack of skin radiance and skin clarity in particular will make you look older than your real age.

AGGRESSORS THAT DAMAGE OUR SKIN

There are 2 families of factors that affect the ageing of our skin: internal and external factors. Internal refers to the natural process of ageing whereas external refers to the environmental aggressors that accelerate the natural process of ageing. There are also external factors that are responsible for skin’s ageing. It has been proven that ageing is accelerated with environmental aggressors that damage our skin, such as pollution, unhealthy food and smoking. In fact the number 1 accelerator of skin ageing is sun exposure. Although moderate sun exposure is beneficial as it boosts the production of vitamin D, excessive exposure will, over time, result in premature ageing of the skin. The damage done is cumulative, which means that sunburn when we are young will affect the way our skin looks 20 or 30 years later! It is a common misconception that DNA is the main reason for skin ageing. The latest scientific studies show that hereditary factors play a small role in skin ageing compared to external factors. Ageing is a natural process that takes place over the years. Our skin is constantly regenerating. New skin cells are being produced and their normal lifecycle is 24 to 28 days. Collagen is lost but also replenished over and over again. As we grow older our skin regenerates at a slower pace: Skin cells take as many as 38 days or more to reproduce. The important protein collagen is depleted faster than produced. Sweat and oil glands slow down thus turning the skin drier. Free radicals accumulate in the cells and become harder to fight. The skin loses its suppleness and elasticity and becomes more fragile. External factors Sun exposure Environmental pollution Stress Smoking Dry indoor environment Bad eating habits Temperature changes There are also external factors that are responsible for skin’s ageing. Today we are living longer than ever. We live 36 years longer on average today than 100 years ago. Optimises hydration levels: Hydration is the first and most important element of great looking skin. Drinking a lot of water is essential and so is the use of moisturisers. Whether our skin is dry, combination or oily, moisturising daily will help the skin reach its optimum hydration level. Balances skin: Different factors can affect the balance of our skin, such as changes in temperature and seasons. This can cause overproduction of sebum or drying out. Using the right skincare products will help the skin’s balance, which reduces the likelihood of breakouts. Neutralises free radicals: Free radicals are damaged cells that scavenge on healthy cells, injuring them and damaging the DNA. When our cells regenerate, they produce a small amount of free radicals (like fumes in a car) but this is normal and is kept under control. When the amount of free radicals increases in our bodies as a result of exposure to external pollutants (air pollution, bad eating habits, stress) they tend to accumulate in the cells and oxidise them. Skincare products containing antioxidant extracts help in neutralising free radicals. Prevents & reverses signs of ageing: Starting with moisturisation at an early age and moving into more advanced and sophisticated anti-ageing solutions, skincare products can help prevent signs of ageing appearing early and partly reverse the process. Counters hormonal changes: As we grow older, our bodies go through different hormonal changes that directly affect the quality of our skin. For example during puberty the skin tends to produce excessive sebum, which results in breakouts, whereas during pregnancy skin discolorations tend to become more prominent. The right skincare products will help counter such effects.
