swimming fishThe rubbing action to make this fish swim
is one I borrowed from a design I saw in a
Japanese book or magazine (which, despite
my best efforts, I have been unable to trace)
but folded very differently. I remember
thinking at the time that the mechanism
was a wonderful idea, so I redesigned the
fish as the version you see here. The same
action is used in the Scuttling Mouse.
1. Fold the top edge down to
the bottom edge.
2. Fold and unfold across the middle.
Use a square of origami paper, white side up.
4. Unfold the center crease.
7. Mountain fold in half again.
5. Turn over.
6. Turn back just a sliver of the edge.
8. Refold Step 2 . . .
3. Mountain fold the corner inside the paper.
Repeat behind.
9. . . . so that the square stands upright, like
this. Between the layers of the square, the
paper is white. Apply pressure on the folded
edge at the back, so that the white pocket
begins to open . . .

10. . . . and open and open, until it begins to
close, bringing one dot to the other . . .
11. . . . like this. The result is a large flat triangle,
sitting on top of the paper. Turn up the two
corners as shown . . .
12. . . . so that between them sits a square.
Fold down one corner.
13. Fold the loose layer over to the right.
14. This is the completed fish. Add an eye.
15. To make the fish swim, hold as shown.
Rub your finger and thumb together as though
sprinkling salt. This will cause the fish to swim
left and right! To complete the effect, move
your hand forward at the same time.
