Introduction
Origamiistheartoffoldingpapertocreatemodels.Thesemaybelifelike,abstract,orgeometricforms.Thisbookbringstogetherarangeofdesignsthatreflectthethemeof“Halloween.”Sincemanyofthesubjectsherearefantasyfigures,theorigamicreatorcanexercisetheirimaginationtotryandcapturethechosensubject.
Despitewhatsomepeoplethink,foldingpaperisn’tsomethingforwhichyouneedhugeamountsofdexterityorskill.Whatyoudoneedisalittlepatienceandadesiretocreatesomethingoutof(almost)nothing.Origamiisaformofmagic—peoplewillbeamazedasyoucreateapairofvampirefangsoraflyingwitchinfrontoftheireyes.
HowtoFoldThekeywordsare“slowly”and“carefully”—trynottorushthroughamodel(itwilllookrushed)andmakesureeverycreaseisasneatandaccurateasyoucanmakeit.Anythinglesswillresultinascruffymodelandpossiblyevenanincompletemodel.Trulymasteringorigamicanbealifetime’sstudy.
Theactoffoldingisamotorskillthatbecomeseasierwithpracticeandconcentration.Untilitbecomessecondnature,makeadeliberateefforttoslowtheprocessdown.Don’tbetemptedtopositionthepaperquickly,butmoveitinsmallerandsmallerincrementsuntilyouaresureitisinthecorrectposition.Holdthepaperinpositionwithonehand,thenmakethecreasewiththeother.Thenreinforcethecrease,soitiscrispandthepaperliesasflatasitcan.
Where&WhentoFoldPreparationisthekeytoanenjoyablefoldingexperience.Findaperfectlyflattablewithplentyofspaceforyoutoarrangeyourinstructionsandsparepaper.Alwayschoosesomewherethatiswelllit.Tryalsotoarrangeforatleast30minutesofuninterruptedtimeinwhichtoconcentrate—ifyouareinahurry,yourfoldingmaywellreflectthis.Don’ttacklenewprojectswhenyouaretiredandstressedandalwaysuselargersheetsofperfectlysquarepaper—youcanlookatfoldingminiatureslateronwhenyouhavemasteredthedesign.
UsingthisBookArangeoffoldingtechniquesareused,withmodelsrangingfromthesimpletothecomplex.Youareadvisedtostartbystudyingthesectiononsymbolsandbases—properunderstandingoforigamiinstructionswillmeanyoucanfoldnotonlythemodelsinthisbook,butthoseyoufindontheInternet,evenwhentheyareinaforeignlanguage.Startthemodelsatthebeginningandworkyourwaythrough,unlessyou’realreadyablackbeltinorigami.Alwaysreadtheassociatedtextbeforeattemptingeachstep.It’salsousefultolookaheadatthenextstep,soyoucanseewhatyouareaimingat.

Foldinginagroupwithothermoreexperiencedfoldersishighlyrecommended,sincetheywillbeabletoquicklyhelpyoupastthoseawkwardstepsandsharetheirexperiences(andmodels)withyou.Therearethousandsofsmallorigamigroupsaroundtheworld.CheckingontheInternetwillquicklytrackthemdownandtheywillbedelightedtomeet,help,andencourageyou.

Whenlearningamodel,mosttypesofthinpaperwillbeOK,butmakesurethesheetisonthelargeside.Onceyouhaveperfectedthefoldingsequence,choosingtherighttypeofpapercanmakeabigdifferencetothefinishedresult.Morecomplicateddesignsmayneedthinnerpaper,otherslookbetterfromslightlythickerpaper.
Doyouseebothsidesofthepaperonthefinishedmodel?Ifso,trytofindpaperwithsuitable,complementarycolors.Trytobuildupacollectionofdifferenttypes,colors,andpatternsofpaper,soyoucanusetheperfectsheetforeverymodelyoumake.Don’tfeelobligedtousededicatedorigamipaper—ifyouwantalargemodelyouwillinevitablyneedtobuyaverylargerectangleorrollofpaperandcutyourownsquare(accurately!)fromit.
