PREFACE

My aim in the following pages has been to attempt a partial Specimen of a compendious,descriptive Catalogue of Original American Works. The necessity for a similar complete Catalogueneed not be dwelt upon.

In such a first attempt as the present, perfection is, even under favorable circumstances,hardly to be expected. Circumstances have not, in this instance, befriended me. Ordinarydifficulties would have been obstacle enough. The abstention of many publishers was somethingmore. Unless the fact could be attested, it would seem to savor of exaggeration to state, that ofover 2000 applications for information made to American authors and publishers touching workswritten or issued by them, only 300 succeeded in eliciting an answer.* This is, however, the case.The remainder were treated as though the matter in question were totally foreign to the interests ofthose addressed. I risk nothing in asserting that it was not.

It must further be statcd'that such defects as may exist in these pages, are mainly attributableto the imperfect character of some of the returns made by authors and publishers, which it was outof my power to control, inasmuch as the works themselves, by which alone these returns could beproperly checked, were not before me.

Subsidiary to the main purpose of this Specimen is another, that of inviting a full andunreserved expression of opinion upon the best method of cataloguing American books.

The following explanatory observations may not be out of place, in reference to the coursepursued in this compilation.

The method generally adopted of transposing the Christian and surnames of authors, has beendeparted from in this Catalogue, in order to render it uniform with all my other Catalogues,andalso from the conviction that the difficulty, inherent in the other system, of distinguishing the twoclasses of names may, by the adoption of the present plan, be avoided.

The explicitness here noticeable in all necessary details is due to the idea that it increases thevalue of a Catalogue for purposes of reference.

Clearness and brevity have been consulted by the use of Abbreviations, to the understanding ofwhich the following explanations may contribute.

It will, of course, be understood that each work consists of but one volume, and is in its firstedition, unless otherwise stated.

The Abbreviations may be divided into four classes. The first class embraces those used for theChristian names of authors, and stand;

Ab. for Abraham.Ad. “ Adolphus.Alb. “ Albert.Al. “ Alexander,And. “ Andrew.Au. “ Austin.Ren. ‘ ‘ Ren.ja.min.G. “ Charles.Clar. “ Clarence.Han. “ Haniel.Hav. “ Havid.Eh. “ Ebenezer.Fdm. “ Edmund.Ed, “ E<lward.Etjb. “ Egbert.E. “ Ernest.Fran. “ Francis.Fr, “ Frederic.Fri. “ Friedrich.

Certain other signs used in this compilation are thus explained:The figure or figures following the title or number of volumes, indicate the size.In the date of first issue, the apostrophe (’) stands for the first two figures of the present century.Cases in which reliable information could not be got, are pointed out by the query (?).

The numeral indicating which edition was for sale in 1873, is separated from the date of firstissue by a short perpendicular line (().

Then follow successively the style of binding, price and Publisher's name.Translations, or works edited by others than the original authors, are sometimes better known

by the name of the translator or editor. In this Catalogue, therefore, to facilitate reference, allsuch translators’ and editors’ names are also given in their proper alphabetical order, and certainworks will consequentlybe found under two or more names.

The bulk of this compilation, I may say in conclusion, by no means represents the painsbestowed upon it, nor the labor and ungratefulness of the task it involved; may I be allowed to hopethat it will in some measure attain the aim with and for which it is published ?
