Throughhisworkasanarchitect,urbandesigner,artist,craftsman,andphilosopher,PaoloSoleri exploredthecountlesspossibilitiesofhumanaspiration.OneoutstandingendeavorisArcosanti,anurbanlaboratory,constructedintheArizonahighdesert.Itattemptstotestanddemonstrateanalternativehumanhabitatwhichisgreatlyneededinthisincreasinglyperplexingworld.Thisprojectalsoexemplifieshissteadfastdevotiontocreatinganexperientialspaceto"prototype"anenvironmentinharmonywithman.Inhisphilosophy”Arcology(Arcitecture +Ecology).Soleri formulatedapaththatmayaidusonourevolutionaryjourneytowardastateofaesthetic,equity,andcompassion.Formorethanahalfcentury,hiswork,markedbyabroad-rangingandcoherentintellect(soscarceintheageofspecialization),hasinfluencedmanyinsearchofanewparadigmforourbuiltenvironment.

Theparkistheendresultofaprocessthatseesafirstphaseofminingandrefiningfollowedbyasecondphaseoforganizingandforming. Infact,theengineerandthegeologian,thenaturalscientistandtheecologist,allwouldworkwiththearchitect,thesculptor,theartist,themusician,andthescholartocombinethegeologyofnaturewithaman-madegeology.
