The public deserves to know exactly how much money comes from natural resources on public lands, and exactly where that money goes. Robust reporting is important and the U.S. needs to be a worldwide leader of transparency. 10/23/13 Dr.  John  Wyndham The  general  public  is  becoming  more  and  more  aware  that  giant  corporations  that  reap  huge  profits  are  actually  doing  this  by  taking  resources  that  arguably  belong  to  the  general  community,  and  then  off-­‐loading  the  true  costs  of  their  operations  onto  the  public  by  polluting  the  air,  rivers,  and  oceans,  as  well  as  causing  health  problems  and  environmental  degradation.  The  earth  is  actually  a  giant  lifeboat  on  which  we  all  depend  for  our  existence.  It  is  no  longer  acceptable  for  a  few  to  make  profits  while  degrading  the  ability  of  this  lifeboat  to  support  its  occupants.  On  a  small  planet  of  finite  resources,  the  greed  of  the  few  can  no  longer  be  allowed  to  outweight  the  needs  of  humanity  itself.  We  must  move  from  a  system  of  predatory  capitalism  to  one  of  sustainable  use  of  resources  with  a  genuine  consideration  for  maintaining  life  on  the  planet  for  future  generations.

10/26/13 Ms.  Mary  Doino This  an  important  issue,  we  know  that  the  extractive  industries  have  been  paying  very  little  for  Native  American  lands,  and  very  little  goes  to  the  people  it  s  supposed  to  support.    In  the  west  of  America,we  have  the  extractive  industries  removing  Millions,  if  not  Billions  of  Ores,  and  oil.    We  have  no  idea  how  much,  and  if  they  are  paying  their  fare  share  to  the  Government.    The  leases  cost  pennies  per  acre,  yet  there  is  no  accountability  to  the  taxpayers.      Overseas  these  industries  have  stripped  third  world  countries  of  their  mineral  wealth,  while  none  goes  to  the  residents  of  those  countries.    Governments  have  been  bribed  and  the  wealthy  take  advantage,  while  poor  indigenous  people  suffer.    Oftenthese  people  are  killed  if  their  land  contains  oil  or  gold.

international  standard  that  ensures  transparency  around  countries'  oil,gas  and  mineral  resources.  It  is  developed  and  overseen  by  a  coalitionof  governments,  companies,  civil  society,  investors  and  internationalorganisations.  All  of  these  groups  are  represented  on  the  EITI  Board.The  EITI  Standard  has  a  robust  yet  flexible  methodology,  whichcountries  adopt  to  address  specific  issues  they  are  facing.  Whenimplemented,  the  EITI  ensures  more  transparency.Robust  reporting  is  important  (taxpayers  don't  want  companies  stealingthe  Public's  resources)    and  the  U.S.  needs  to  be  a  worldwide  leader  oftransparency.  It  is  evident  from  the  39  countries  that  have  alreadysigned  on  that  shining  a  light  spots  of  darkness  is  a  benefit  to  thepeople.

11/7/13 Dr.  Patricia  K  Townsend As  a  researcher,  I  have  been  working  on  the  issue  of  transparency  indeveloping  countries  but  as  a  citizen,  I  realize  that  we  have  no  clearidea  about  this  for  our  own  country.

I  suspect  from  my  own  research  on  mining  overseas  that  Canadian  miningcompanies,  for  example,  are  racking  up  substantial  profits  in  US  mineswhile  leaving  environmental  debts  for  American  taxpayers  to  cope  within  the  future,  but  without  this  robust  reporting  I  would  now  know  howto  document  any  of  this.
