Original Letter Signed Dear Secretariat, I support the U.S. application to join the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative. The public deserves to know exactly how much money comes from natural resources on public lands, and exactly where that money goes. Robust reporting is important and the U.S. needs to be a worldwide leader of transparency. It is evident from the 39 countries that have already signed on that amazing things can happen when light is brought to spots of darkness. The reporting standards for extractive industries need to be high and remain high. Thank you for supporting this initiative, and I look forward to when the U.S. formally joins. Sincerely, [Signatures follow]

Specific Comments Received10/23/13 Ms. Alyssa Anderson The U.S. should be an example. We always want to
be seen as the good guys in the world, the kind of country other countries aspire to be like.10/23/13 Mr. Thomas Nieland The resources extracted from public lands must be used to benefit the
public, and help transition to sustainable industries!10/23/13 Ms. Ethlynn Dewitt Long overdue!!10/23/13 Mr. Neil Olson The "Wild West" frontier age, when
natural resources seemed unlimited, is over, and we need a careful accounting for the use of our remaining resources.
10/23/13 Mrs. Hazel Poolos The EITI is exactly what we need to be a part of.
10/23/13 Dr. Brian Stross The U.S. needs to be a worldwide leader of transparency, rather than a model of the opposite as currently seems to be the case.. 39 countries that have already signed on show that it can be done and should be done, and that should be just for starters.
10/23/13 Mr. Kevan Vance As a citizen of this country, I am entitled to know all about mynatural resources and deriving revenue from them must be public record for all to see. Thank you for your consideration.
10/23/13 Mr. Mark Cohen It is our land. We have a right to know
10/23/13 Mrs. Maria Borowy If the US Government could use the profits to benefit Social Programs the Republican's do not want to fund. Contractors should not be able to keep most of the profits.
10/23/13 Mrs. Susan Terwilliger Public lands belong to all citizens, and it's important for the public to be able to understand exactly where and how the profits from these resources are used.
10/23/13 Mr. Jerry Bloomer Extractive industries are notorious for keeping information about what they are doing or covering up what they have done.
10/23/13 Ms. miriam kurland i am very upset that private companies are allowed to extract the public's natural resources.
10/23/13 Ms. Trudy Crow The U.S. needs to be a worldwide leader of transparency and we need toknow who profits from the natural resources secured from public land.
10/23/13 Ms. Sara Hart the U.S. needs to be a worldwide leader of transparency.
10/23/13 Mr. Melvin Bautista For too long, all mining, oil drilling, various types of mineral, oil & gas extration on our public lands have benefited the companies who have the mining permits. They have benefited from the mineral resources owned by the people. These companies need to show the wealth they have generated and start paying back to the people what they havetaken.
10/23/13 Mr. Brad Henson The Citizens need to have an understanding and avoice regarding the use of their public natural resources.
10/23/13 Mr. Keith Rutter With everything that has happened recently with the NSA, transparencyis more important than ever. Robust reporting is important and the U.S.needs to be a worldwide leader of transparency. It is evident from the39 countries that have already signed on that amazing things can happenwhen light is brought to spots of darkness.
10/23/13 Ms. Dotty Caldwell Accurate information is a vital component inmaking good policy.
10/23/13 Ms. lynn manzione The Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, or EITImakes iteasier to track the money industries make from the sale of the public'snatural resources, such as oil, coal, natural gas and hard rockminerals. The initiative has made a big difference in the 39 countries that arealready taking part, and I'm excited about the potential for greatertransparency that it offers us here in the U.S.
10/23/13 Dr. Robert Janusko Recent disclosures have revealed how much of our government andindustrial activity is carried on in secret. This is terminallydetrimental to our democracy.
10/23/13 Mrs. Carole Plourde This is long overdue and transparency is needed to prevent anymoreresource "wars" for coming generations.
10/23/13 Ms. Rosemary Maziarz As a citizen, I want to know how much of my tax dollars that are spenton public lands are spent for the benefit of the land and the flora andfauna on it and how corporations are profiting for free use of thatland. Seems to me the public should reap some benefit from the takingof public resources.
10/23/13 Dr. John Wyndham The general public is becoming more and more aware that giant corporations that reap huge profits are actually doing this by taking resources that arguably belong to the general community, and then off-‐loading the true costs of their operations onto the public by polluting the air, rivers, and oceans, as well as causing health problems and environmental degradation. The earth is actually a giant lifeboat on which we all depend for our existence. It is no longer acceptable for a few to make profits while degrading the ability of this lifeboat to support its occupants. On a small planet of finite resources, the greed of the few can no longer be allowed to outweight the needs of humanity itself. We must move from a system of predatory capitalism to one of sustainable use of resources with a genuine consideration for maintaining life on the planet for future generations.
10/23/13 Mr. James Gordon PRNDL."Politics is like driving. To go backward put it in R. To goforward put it in D."
10/23/13 Mr. Mark McKennon The extractive industries are predicated on making as much money aspossible, cutting as many corners as possible, as often as possible. The rightful resources that belong to We the People seem a minor partof the equation to them. They pay only when forced or required, butunless we have more information, the government and people are in aweak position to require them to comply. The more information thebetter. Laws, regulations, subsidies, licensing arrangements, andenormous tax breaks have favored these industries more than longenough.
10/23/13 Mrs. Joan Smith My husband and I totally support this. I could not open the field belowso I will put my name here: Joan Smith, PO Box 86, Cedar Crest, NM87008
10/23/13 Mr. Patrick Bosold This is mission-‐critical information that should be completely public. We can only make good and fair decisions about public policy regardingresource extraction if we have a full and complete picture of how itworks -‐ and where the money goes.
10/23/13 Mrs. Diana Zeiset The natural resources belong to all of us. It is our right to knowwhat they are being used for...HUGE corporate profits are not a use!
10/23/13 Mr. Gary O'Connor It is clear to me that the public has beenshortchanged many times on mineral leases. EITI can go a long waytoward redressing that inequity.
10/23/13 Ms. Amber Garlan Transparency is an important part of democracy.
10/23/13 Ms. Erica Wissinger It is evident from the 39 countries that havealready signed on that positive benefits may result.
10/23/13 Mr. Gary Adams The U.S. needs to be a worldwide leader of transparency. 39 countrieshave already signed on. The U.S. must as well.
10/23/13 Ms. Devon Cooper Please consider joining the initiative. It willhelp us all leave a better world for generations to come.
10/23/13 Mr. Greg Flynn Please support the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative; it isin the best interest of the United States.
10/23/13 Ms. Susan Chandler To restore its international credibility, the U.S. needs to become aleader in transparency, and this Initiative is a solid first step.
10/23/13 Mrs. Laura E. Montgomery This is an extremely important action.
10/23/13 Ms. Martha Eberle Having read of the results, I think the U.S. should join and benefitfrom this transparency.
10/23/13 Dr. Valerie Haugen It is also the right thing to do! The US puts development assistancemoney into Nigeria, a wealthy country with a huge extractive industriessector and horrendous pollution and corruption and a 60+ malnutritionrate among children. Wouldn't it be so much more effective to combatthe corruption, the pollution and the skewed distribution of wealth?
10/23/13 Mr. Ed Rothschild Transparency is vital because the public needsto have information on the exploitation of its resources and whetherthe extraction of those resources is benefiting the public. It isevident from the 39 countries that have already signed on that shininga light in this area can bring reforms where and if needed.
10/23/13 Ms. Toni Garmon DO YOUR JOB.......WE DESERVE TO KNOW THE TRUTH....YOU WORK FOR US........REMEMBER ????
10/23/13 Mrs. Sonja Stahlhut This is an idea whose time has come. We need to know what we aregiving up, and what we are gaining when we allow extraction of naturalresources from publicly held lands. And we certainly need to know whatis done with the money made from these ventures.
10/23/13 Ms. Wendy Fast Basically, Extractive Industries are on the government dole, and thepeople are the losers.
10/23/13 Ms. Christina Volz-‐Bongar Please make an example of the U.S. in the world and support this policyof transparency. It is imperative for our children's futures.
10/23/13 Mr. cletus stein The public needs to make an appropriate amount onour resources and the damage needs to be totally redeemed!
10/23/13 Mr. ULF LÖIDBECK Public land stretches fro surface down to the middle of the earth. All natural resources in and on public land elongs to us the peopleNo drilling or mining into public land is allowed without thepermission of us the owners. No drilling for oil in the waters along our coastlines are allowed without permission by us the people and we shall have our part of theprofit. No drilling of oil on international water without US declaration ofincome from the drilling company if it is an American company or theprofit takers are Americans
10/23/13 Ms. Patricia Shook If it is Public Land (resources) why is there even a question ???And.......transparency should be a given..... but alas...it's not.Thank you for this effort. Patricia Shook
10/23/13 Mr. Larry Zim I suspect that the extractive corporations do not want this informationexamined at all, and are willing to exert pressure on the InteriorDepartment to have their way. Please prove me wrong.
10/23/13 Mr. Richard Dimatteo Thorough and accurate revelations are essential and the U.S. needs tobe a worldwide leader of transparency
10/23/13 Mrs. Jeannie Bosa It's past time to stop giving big business so much leaway and littleto no supervision, while they rake in profits, give away millions totheir CEO's, and increase prices to the struggling consumer. At leastsome transparency might help and should be required.
10/23/13 Mr. Steven Combes STOP THE GLUTTONY! !
10/23/13 Ms. lisa rochelle THIS IS IMPORTANT TO ME!
10/23/13 Mrs. Barbara Garber The US needs to sign on to this. It isn't any different than farmingsomeone's fields for whatever reason and then keeping them in the darkas to how much revenue has realized . Their our resources and weneed to know details of their use.
10/23/13 Mr. Scott Amey For example, Nigeria, an EITI compliant country, released audits thatidentified financial discrepancies, mispaid taxes, and systeminefficiencies. According to EITI, Nigeria identified over US$800m ofunresolved differences between what companies said that they paid intaxes, royalties, and signature bonusesagainst what the government said it received.
10/23/13 Dr. Robert Abramson EITI is important because it helps identify themassive theft of property that belongs to the citizens. The onlydrawback to transparency is that it may reduce the many millions ofdollars given to members of congress for voting against America and thecitizens in payment for special treatment and tax breaks for thesepowerful and extreemly wealthy corporations.
10/23/13 Mr. Robert Delfs The US needs to be a worldwide leader of transparency about the use ofour natural resources. As taxpayers and citizens, we need tounderstand the use of our public lands by private companies, the natureof the leases and the lease revenues collected by the government, whether our public lands were damaged or suffered other negativeeffects as the result of this use, and if so, how that damage to ourpublic lands was mitigated or compensated.
10/23/13 Ms. darleen cox Quit mining or drilling on publiclands -‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐-‐
10/23/13 Mr. Corbin Lambeth Thorough, all-‐access reporting is absolutely essential, and the U.S.needs to be a worldwide leader of transparency. It is evident from the39 countries that have already signed on that amazing things can happenwhen light is brought to spots of darkness. The more we allow to behidden, the more we allow for laws to be broken and damage to be done. That is unacceptable.
10/23/13 Mrs. Susan Raybuck A full analysis of the benefits and costs of extractive industries androbust reporting of the findings are critical to informed decisionmaking. The world's oldest democracy should be the worldwide leader intransparency because that provides the infrastructure for betterdecision-‐making and sheds light on spots of darkness. With 39 countries already signed on to support, the U.S. should be oneof those countries exhibiting leadership in this area. Please support EITI.
10/23/13 Ms. Marilyn Flint 39 countries that have already signed on. We need to do the same.
10/23/13 Mr. Richard Fairfield Robust reporting is important and the U.S. needs to be a worldwideleader of transparency.
10/23/13 Mr. Michael MacPherson The oil from the Arctic, off shore drilling and drilling anywhere elseon American soil is all going on the international stock market, thereis no benefit to the American people. The American taxpayers own this country, not you Mr. President, not theoil companies, not the Banks, not the Koch Brothers, Not the NRA, notthe Republicans and not Wall Street, we the taxpayers do and we do notwant our tax money to be stolen by you and corrupt politicians. Pleasegive back any money you have taken from the Oil industry and stop thisinsane oil drilling that the American people are not getting a singledine for.How would you like it Mr. President if a large furniture shop paid yoursecurity to let them come into the White House and take the furnitureand you have to go and pay for your bed in order to have a good nightssleep? That is what the American people have to do when they buy gas. They have to buy the gas made from their oil. At least stop the oilcompanies from drilling in the Arctic.
10/23/13 Mr. James F. Pasquini It's about time that we, as owners' of resources mined on public lands, start receiving the proper monies from the industries profiting fromthem. If the industries as willing to make the public lands off-‐limitto the public while they're mining, then the public should receivecompensation in the form of money into the federal and/or statetreasuries.
10/23/13 Ms. Mary Sive Dear Secretary Jewell:The US should be taking the lead internationally, and I hope wewill.
10/23/13 Mr. kevin orme We need to KNOW what companies are up to, good or bad. If good, we canpraise them for being responsible. If bad, we can STOP it. Eitherway, it beats endless FOIA requests and lawsuits/court battles. Pleasesupport transparency, here and now.
10/23/13 Mr. Joseph Lynne In light of the recent government shutdowndebacle, I believe this would create an excellent opportunity for theU.S. federal government to reestablish trust with the American people,an essential component of a strong constitutional republic
10/23/13 Mr. grant wilson Living in Utah it is becoming increasingly important to know where themoney from the mining and drilling operations on public lands(BLM andstate protected?property) is going. There is currently no informationavailable and I, for one, am very tired of watching the rich get richerat my expense. Please follow through on joining this initiative andforcing the transparency we need.
10/23/13 Mr. Gregory Driscoll Transparency is one of the the hallmarks of democratic societies. Inthis one step, we can demonstrate to the world that democracy stillmotivates this country.
10/23/13 Ms. Boots Whitehead We need 100% transparency
10/23/13 Mr. Mark Bauman DO THE RIGHT THING. PROTEVT PEOPLE AND THEENVIRONMENT
10/23/13 Mr. Daniel Mancinone Honest reporting is important and the U.S. should be a worldwide leaderof transparency
10/23/13 Mrs. Rose Bertrand We need to be a leader to the world in openness. No one can change whatthey do not acknowledge.
10/23/13 Mrs. Mary Botcheos This is the age of information technology, governments have the choiceto be transparent or to be the target of misinformation. So far, the USgovernment has proved incompetent: Affordable Health Care software,Manning and Snowden.
10/23/13 Ms. Rhonda Rumrey As citizens, we have the right to know what happens on and with OURland!
10/23/13 Ms. Rebecca Kimsey If we are going to allow private entities to useour public lands, then we have an absolute right to now how much thoseprivate entities are benefiting, and how they are using "our"profits.
10/23/13 Ms. Teddy Gingerich Too many foreign countries are behind mining, drilling and othermethods of removing natural resources on our land. Too many areas aredestroyed forever, by companies who have no need to worry about thedamage they do, no incentive to clean up and restore the land.
10/23/13 Mr. Dennis Hatleli As citizens of a Democracy it is the obligationof government to keep us informed
10/23/13 Ms. Carlene Petty The public always needs to know the truth. The truth about drilling isimportant.
10/23/13 Ms. Katherine Rykowski It is time to declare that we will no longer support those practicesthat hurt our climate and our health.
10/23/13 Ms. Lynn Wilbur The resources belong to the people, not the corporations that lease toextract. Money from the enormous profits that these corporations rakein must benefit the communities from which the resources are taken. Isupport the US involvement in the EITI.
10/23/13 Dr. Daniel Gibbs More revenue is needed from the extractive industries, particularly thefossil fuels oil, gas and coal. Some of that revenue should be used tosupport renewable alternatives. The future cost to the U.S. fromburning fossil fuels is a huge unfunded liability being passed on toour grandchildren.Let's at least have transparency about which companies and industriesare getting benefits today.
10/23/13 Ms. Fran Watson We should get into this!
10/23/13 Ms. Debi Jackson Robust reporting is vitally important and the U.S. needs to be aworldwide leader of transparency
10/23/13 Mrs. Andronetta Douglass In order to safeguard the natural resources for the sake of the public,we need this transparency. We should not be robbed of our naturalresources.
10/23/13 Mr. Sanford Schuman It's odd that Iraq -‐ obviously under US influence -‐ applied for EITI status in 2010 (granted last December), and yet we are not a compliant nation. It is hardly debatable that in many countries, the benefits of natural resources flow to a relative handful of families and investors. This stagnates the economy and adds to social and political unrest.Of all the ways the US might wish to encourage successful democracies in the world, I think that adding support to EITI would provide the most "bang for the buck"."Let your light so shine before men."
10/23/13 Mrs. Lucy Simons Kaufman Big business, especially the oil industry, needsto be watched and held accountable when they damage habitat.
10/23/13 Mrs. Maris Keller Once our public lands are being used by private entities for their ownprofit taking, we no longer can call them "public lands".The losses are permanent when we extract non-‐replaceable materials. The present becomes, therefore, the future of the planet that we leaveto our children.
10/23/13 Mr. John Nutefall Please support EITI.
10/23/13 Ms. Alice Green It is way past time to be doing this, let's not waste any more time.Start now!
10/23/13 Mr. Warren Keller The U.S. needs to be a worldwide leader of transparency. It is evidentfrom the 39 countries that have already signed on that amazing thingscan happen when light is brought to spots of darkness.
10/23/13 Mr. J Froiland You only need secrecy if you're doing something wrong.
10/23/13 Ms. Jerri Jarvis We the people, the taxpayers of the U.S. demand transparency on whereare money is going.
10/23/13 Ms. Ellen Barron It is evident from the 39 countries that havealready signed on that amazing things can happen when light is broughtto spots of deception.
10/23/13 Mrs. Susan Dunaway Public land BELONGS to the public. It is held in the 'public trust' -‐WE, the public, should be TOLD just how RICH all the companies whoextract OUR natural resources are becoming !!
10/23/13 Mr. Dick Gray It is evident from the 39 countries that havealready signed on that amazing things can happen when light is broughtto spots of darkness. Also, it keeps people honest.
10/23/13 Mrs. Monica Latka Black It is time for the public to be fully informed about the dealings ofBig Oil, Gas and Coal. An informed public can and will make change forthe good of all instead of the enrichment of a few.
10/23/13 Mr. Robert Hernandez Please help make this a reality.
10/23/13 Ms. Anita Buffer Robust reporting IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT.The U.S. needs to be a WORLDWIDE LEADER of TRANSPARENCY.It is evident from the 39 countries that have ALREADY SIGNED ON.....that amazing things can happen when light is brought to spots ofdarkness.
10/23/13 Dr. Kerry Davis All of us middle-‐income tax payers give corporations trillions of ourhard earned money in subsidies and their free use of public lands. Taxpayers should get something back from that sacrifice. Lets havetransparency about company profits coming from public lands.
10/23/13 Mr. Paul Roden Energy extractive industries who give millions to political campaigns, candidates, PAC's and political parties as well as to lobbyists, shoulddisclose who and how much money they have given and who has acceptedit. Polluters shouldn't be aloud to write the rules, pick theirenforcers and get away with violations by buying their way out it andstill not complying with the law as weak as it is and continue ruiningour environment at the taxpayers expense and health.
10/23/13 Ms. Angela Raymond If the government is going to allow the use of eminent domain and otherimmormal strategies to take land from it's citizens, then the leastthey can do is be transparent about where the money is going. I don'tagree with these tactics and truly believe that "green" isthe way to go, and think more emphasis, time and energy should go intogreen energy. Until then, I agree with this petition.
10/23/13 Mr. Brian McNaughton Transparency in extractive industries is an absolute must have! Thepublic must have complete access to all the facts and figuressurrounding all the extractive industries, now!Robust reporting is important and the U.S. needs to be a worldwideleader of transparency. It is evident from the 39 countries that havealready signed on that amazing things can happen when light is broughtto spots of darkness.
10/23/13 Ms. Elsie Pope This is the right thing to do. Please.
10/23/13 Mr. Robert Warren Truthful accounting of resources depletion and redistribution and themonies derived therefrom should never have been an issue, yetextractive industries have almost always been given a green light toproceed at their business as a matter of course without regard torigorous accounting.
10/23/13 Ms. Marcia Bailey Right now, we, the public, are paying for all of the mistakes and notgetting benefit from the products these companies are selling for hugeprofits. If this were to change, we might use that money for projectsthat would help all Americans.
10/23/13 Mr. Colin Kay Like the NBC and CBS commercials say. "The more you know"
10/23/13 Mr. fankr brisk Work for your country. Not corporations.
10/23/13 Ms. t logan It is evident from the 39 countries that havealready signed on that amazing things can happen when light is broughtto spots of darkness.PUBLIC LAND
10/23/13 Dr. elizabeth hegeman Sunshine on drilling and natural resource exploitation!
10/23/13 Mr. Eric Knepper I sincerely hope we will participate in this international initiativeto continue our leadership throughout the world.
10/23/13 Ms. Amanda McNeill Our natural resources are jointly-‐held by the American people and wehave the right to know exactly who is making a fortune at our expense.Public oversight is impossible when the facts are held in secrecy. Ournational health may depend upon our knowing these facts so that thepublic can request specific protections from our government, which, bythe way, is not in existence to produce obscene profits forcorporations.
The Department of the Interior has a trust obligation to manage ourjointly-‐held resources in the best interests of the American citizens.Joining the EITI will bring long-‐missing and much-‐needed transparencyto the extractive industries sector of our economy and eventuallyresult in a higher trust level of government management in the Americanpeople.
10/23/13 Mr. Jim Rice This issue needs to be be broadly reported to the public freely andoften.
10/23/13 Ms. Nancy Lyttle I also believe that Americans have the right toPROHIBIT the exploitation and ruination of our Natural Resources! Therich get richer and the people are left to clean up their mess!
10/23/13 Mr. Gary Peters I hope our government will join thisinitiative.
10/23/13 Mr. William Wagstaff In addition, the public needs to earn a significant return from thisextraction that is used to fund the public good, i.e., schools, roads, infrastructure, etc
10/23/13 Mr. Jeffrey Werner I personally hope to see the U.S. begin to followthrough on promises of transparency
10/23/13 Ms. Elaine Balgemann The initiative has made a big difference in the39 countries that are already taking part. The Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, or EITI. In short,EITI makes it easier to track the money industries make from the saleof the public's natural resources, such as oil, coal, natural gas andhard rock minerals. This is an opportunity for the U.S. to showcase its commitment totransparency. Americans deserve 100 percent transparency on where therevenue from our natural resources goes.
10/23/13 Ms. Pat Kirk THEY SHOULD BE REQUIRED TO REMIT A LARGE PERCENTAGE OF THEIR PROFITS TOTHE OWNERS OF THE LAND-‐THE PEOPLE/GOVERNMENT OF THE USA.
10/23/13 Mr. kent mollohan Oh, and you will likely need to remind our"liberal" and "mainstream" press that they shouldreport such things. I know, it's a bother, but remind them anyway.
10/23/13 Mrs. Helen Hanna 39 countries that have already signed on tothis initiative, and I think that U.S. citizens also deserve to knowwhat is going on and who is getting rich off of the natural God-‐givenresources that belong to all of us, as a whole.
10/23/13 Ms. Sherron Collins Too often, awards and fines are publicized, but the destination of themoney is not explained. The same goes for any income to thegovernment. The EITI will make that information public.
10/23/13 Ms. Suzanne Shute Transparency is most important when it comes to natural resources onpublic land. This is the basis of any fair transaction. The InteriorDepartment shouldn't have any problem with this request unless there issomething their trying to hide. Transparency is essential to a healthydemocracy. We need 100% transparencey on revenue from the public'snatural resources.
10/23/13 Mr. Bruce Kran Robust reporting is important and the U.S. needs to be a worldwideleader of transparency. It is evident from the 39 countries that havealready signed on that amazing things can happen when light is broughtto spots of darkness. How else can the government properly perform itsfiduciary responsibility to get the best value for what is the propertyof the American people. As a citizen of Nevada I am quite aware thatthe public land is often made available at well below its worth, withthe true value being extracted abroad by foreign companies in the caseof our gold ore. We can't afford to not do this right and for that weneed to collect this information. Go for it,
10/23/13 Mrs. Rolaine Smoot We need to know just how much their making andnot sharing for destroying public land!!!
10/23/13 Ms. raquel brac It's time for Americans to know how America spends the money itreceives from sales of the public's natural resources. Let's finallymake that happen.
10/23/13 Ms. Frances Wade Resources from Public Lands should not be just passed over to privatecompanies extracting them. They should make a fair profit for theirwork, but the public also has a stake in this and should receive faircompensation for depleting our lands.
10/23/13 Miss Rosita Aranita I firmly support greater transparency so we can protect ourselves andour environment!
10/23/13 Mr. Robert Paarshall It was recently in the news, that the U.S. government agency taskedwith monitoring extractive industry royalty payments here was LITERALLYIN BED with industry reps, and turning blind eyes to under-‐compensationabuses. We NEED public awareness of the deals that have been struck, and monitoring of actual production and payout of the agreed-‐onroyalties. It is clear that permitting underpayment has been YETANOTHER secretive dollop of corporate welfare support, at our expense. There are lots of REASONS why Uncle Sam is broke, and this is certainlypart of that ugly picture.Gas, oil and coal companies are busy squandering America's patrimony ofenergy resources in hungrier international markets, gaining quickprofits, at our loss -‐ and inflating the cost of energy here. At thevery least, we need public understanding of the compensation levelsthat we are receiving, and how that compares with international norms.Internationally, there has been a pattern of extractive industriespaying off a few local power brokers -‐ gaining entree to localresources -‐ and paying little or nothing into national accounts. WeNEED to KNOW if the same is actually standard operating procedure HERE!In truth, energy in the ground is a beautiful thing. It will only getMORE valuable, over time, if we can keep our petro-‐profiteers fromsquandering it prematurely. Also we subvert our own climate-‐protectionagendas, by encouraging international energy users to go for thatlow-‐hanging fruit, rather than turning to sustainable energy.
10/23/13 Ms. Pamela Burns Robust reporting is important and the U.S. needs to be a worldwideleader of transparency. It is evident from the 39 countries that havealready signed on that amazing things can happen when light is broughtto spots of darkness. Pease.
10/23/13 Mr. Sherman Lewis Industry has to make money, but balanced against other imperatives, mainly protecting the environment and fair tax revenues. The temptationto skimp on these other imperatives in order to get economic growthshould be avoided. Long term, far more economic gains have come fromtechnological advance than weak regulation or tax loopholes. Highcommodity prices are major drivers of technology and productivitygains. Transparency will help achieve the imperatives and even spurtechnology.
10/23/13 Ms. Betty Trentlyon The incredibly profitable fossil fuel industrymust be made more accountable.
10/23/13 Mr. Larry Courtney Keep up the good work.
10/23/13 Mr. Bill Lynn Yes, EITI is necessary.
10/23/13 Ms. charlene santana I am very much interested in what happens to public lands resources andthe revenues generated. Are these monies benefitting the public in anyway? What projects or services have been implemented from the proceeds? What projects/ services, etc are to be created/implemented goingforward? Does the public have any input in as to how these revenues areutilized?
10/23/13 Mrs. MaryLee Hicks Public lands should be a resource for all! The people shd be able tosee how they are used'
10/23/13 Dr. K Burch It is alleged that cancer causing chemicals are used for fracking. And how do we PROVE it unless their is allowance for investigation INDEPENDENTLY. We have no reliable authority to accept but the GMO companies who are making billions from their products as to whether they are safe on LONGTERM and AS-‐USED basis: why not? We have been on this road before with poisons which affect us for decades: Asbestos, PCBs. DDT, LEAD for just a few. Are the chemical compounds used to disperse oil spills toxic to humans or just to everything which comes into contact with it? We NEED to know before WE permit the continued use!Can anyone imagine what would happen if government permitted unlimited use of plutonium for making school lunches if a company found a way tomake it profitable and presented its one sided version of safety? That's where we are!
10/23/13 Mr. David Bridgeman The public would like to see these figures to properly determine there-‐distribution of the public assets to the public on the model of TheAlaskan State Fund.
10/23/13 Ms. MaryAnn Peters All too often, some generic "report" is made in which we mustgo digging (without knowing where to search) to find out any realinformation.
10/23/13 Mr. Harrison Carlton I would like to see the exact breakdown on howthe money is spent on each of the companies who extract naturalresources and who benefits from this operation.Sincerely, Harrison Carlton
10/23/13 Mr. Vincent Patti One more -‐ this "darkenss" isgenocidal. This is really, really important to fully acknowledge.
10/23/13 Mr. greg pearce There comes a time when public interests MUST bemore iimportant than coporate profits, and that time is now. Untilthere is reasonable controls placed on these greed driven thieves, thennothing is safe, and nothing is sacred. These things will not return ,once they are gone, and to facilitate this kind of destruction iscriminal.
10/23/13 Ms. Nina Council Absolutely there must be transparency. Today our U.S. Wild horses arebeing rounded up by the BLM on PUBLIC LANDS because the cattle industrywants the horses gone. Many illegal activities are taking place suchas beautiful, intelligent wild horses being sold off to kill buyers for$10 and being sent to Mexico and Canada to be slaughtered for humanconsumption. France, Belgium, Japan, and now more countries are buyinghorsemeat from the U.S. If more Americans were aware hopefully thishorror would stop, and humans brought to justice for these terrificallybrutal slaughters with so much horrific suffering involved. Iabsolutely support transparency.
10/23/13 Ms. Sandra Herndon If Congress did it's job, there would be no need to prosecute"Whistleblowers"!
10/23/13 Mrs. Vivianne Mosca-‐Clark The resources, are for all that live in the area. Business Seems towant to take it all for them selves.
10/23/13 Dr. William Davis Never trust a corporation!
10/23/13 Mr. Garry Spencer The US has provided an important infrastructure to promote commerce. It is vitally important that those reaping the benefit are equitable insharing the cost.
10/23/13 Mr. Allen Bohnert Thank you.
10/23/13 Ms. Harriette Lefler We should not give our natural resources away without benefit to ourcitizens. Corporations ARE NOT people who get freebies from the publicin exchange for destroying our environment air, water, infrastructureand on top of it all charge us taxes for the product produced when theypay no taxes and CEOs make millions.
10/23/13 Ms. Sanna Lowrance When government begins to hold the plutocracy accountable, perhapscitizens will begin to regain some level of trust in the system.
10/23/13 Ms. Susan Wickman We have every right to track use and profit fromour natural resources.Sincerely, Susan Wickman
10/23/13 Ms. Marie Snavely Please support our country's signing on to this. Thank you for considering my concerns.
10/23/13 Ms. Judith Zitko In addition to this, perhaps a percentage of money earned from thesematerials could either be paid to the government or subsidies for thepeople in the form of tax credits. It's our tax dollars that supportthe public lands so we should benefit whenever a private corporationextracts minerals, etc. for their profit. This is done already inAlaska with the oil industry.
10/23/13 Mr. Tom Brandt .......It's about time corporations STOP getting public land andresources free or almost free.$150,00 per mbf for old growth timber should be illegal.
10/23/13 Mrs. Polly Tarpley This is a long-‐time bone of contention in the USA, and it needs to berectified posthaste!
10/23/13 Ms. Maureen Murphy I support POGO in this endeavor. The US needs to be more transparentand this initiative will help worldwide.
10/23/13 Mr. T. Ed. Webb Robust reporting is important and the U.S. needs to be a worldwideleader of transparency. It is evident from the 39 countries that havealready signed on that amazing things can happen when light is broughtto areas of darkness.
10/23/13 Ms. Linda Maynard What happens when the lies come out
10/23/13 Ms. Dee Potter This is a GREAT idea!
10/23/13 Mr. John Viacrucis It's time that the U.S. join this initiative.
10/23/13 Dr. V.E. Perkins But bringing light to "spots of darkness" is only the beginning. The extractiveindustries are taking materials from the earth that will never be replaced. They needto pay far more than they do for being permitted to mine. In particular, they needto be forced to share their obscene profits with the people of the poor countrieswhere this exploitation is going on. Too often, whatever sharing of profits is happening goes into the pockets of corrupt politicians. In view of my comments, I'd like to know what the EITI is going to do to address those further problems.
10/23/13 Mr. cody vanarsdale I have no problem with individual people or companies making money in public lands, but only if they are paying a fair rate back to the public from the profits from that land -‐-‐ not some cheap rate based on some formula set ages ago or some politician's "idea" givento them by these profiteers. We need more money coming into the government to balance our budget (NOT for additional spending) and setting a fair rate in return for using and extracting public lands is one way to do that.
10/23/13 Ms. GRACE NEFF I've been wondering about this as it seems the poorer nations are theones suffering the most.
10/23/13 Ms. Rhoda Karusaitis Our country has many needs and the money from use of its resourcesshould be known and applied to public needs. Mining right fees from1875, for example, should be known to our citizens.
10/23/13 Ms. DEBORAH SMITH WE NEED MORE OF THIS TYPE OPERATING.
10/23/13 Ms. Susan Westervelt Our public lands have far more value than just what is extracted from them for money. Our natural resources are finite and we simply must use them judiciously. Being able to track where the money goes will give us a much needed start.
10/23/13 Mr. Paul Richey Since we are such a prominent world industrial leader it would behooveus to make our participation in the Extractive Industries TransparencyInitiative at this time. Keep in mind the extraction of minerals from PUBLICLANDS should result in public benefit not the bottomline of a private corporation or worse yet, the annual income of someone from the 1%.
10/23/13 Ms. Corrinne Crawford These lands belong to all of us, and as owners, we should be informedclearly about what happens with our property.
10/23/13 Ms. SUE DEAN Please support this long overdue idea to become areal it.Thank you!
10/23/13 Ms. Shel Anderson I lived in Oregon for 30 years, and have observed what is allowed onfederal lands. It is very critical that the local community can knowwhat is being taken from local federal areas.
10/23/13 Mr. John Catherine IT'S PAST TIME TO UNDO THE ENVIRONMENTALLY CATASTROPHIC EFFECTS OF DICKCHENEY'S SECRET MEETINGS WITH ENERGY PRODUCERS. E.G., THE UNDISCLOSEDCHEMICALS USED IN FRACKING!
10/23/13 Ms. Sarah McKee Back when I worked for the U.S. Department of Energy, I was well awarethat oil companies did not pay Indian tribes anywhere what the tribeswere owed in royalties for oil removed from their lands. It would not in the least surprise me that the same was true forfederal lands.Accurate, complete reporting is imperative. The U.S. needs to be aworldwide leader of transparency
10/23/13 Dr. Harry & Virginia Pence We should all be cautious of any arrangements that are made behindclosed doors. Americans try to be well informed, and they are tired oflies and poor bargains that cost us more and give us so much less thanwe are entitled to receive.
10/23/13 Mr. gary charles BETTER YET HOW MUCH OF THE MONEY IS DONATED TOPOLITICAL PARTIES
10/23/13 Mrs. MaryLynn Michaelis This is a concept whose time has come
10/23/13 Mr. ALFREDO ALANIZ Every year, trillions of dollars are generated worldwide by theindustries that extract natural resources through mining or drilling. This often happens on public land-‐-‐but how much from the sale of thosenatural resources benefits the public and how much enriches corporatecoffers?Profits realized, need to be shared with the Public Trust, and anymistakes and Environmental disasters, as the result of Corporatemishaps, mismanagement of resources, malfeasance, Corporate Screw ups(like the BP disaster in the Gulf of Mexico) and Environmental failuresneed to be coordinated. And Assurances need to be taken by Private andPublically Traded Corporations on their on Balance sheets. The Public Trust should not have be the Savior of last Resort, when itcomes to the malfeasance by Irresponsible corporations, because theymismanaged resources or did not plan properly.Corporations will ALWAYS FAIL! AND, THEY WILL ALWAYS FAIL THE PUBLICTRUST, because they are ONLY concerned with THEIR OWN INTERESTS, andNOT the Interests of the Public, the Country, or that of the UnitedStates.signed, Alfredo Alaniz, of Tyler, Texas
10/23/13 Mr. James Dryer Support EITI now.
10/23/13 Ms. Barbara Dahms Our resources belong to our people. To let their value be siphoned offto Capitalists around the world is criminal. Do not allow it. Give usan accounting of their robbery.
10/23/13 Ms. margaret ropchan no government secrecy in a democracy
10/23/13 Ms. Sue Miller 39 countries ahead of US? What is that?WE SHOULD HAVE BEEN THE FIRST!Why was our "application" so late? Well, we all know why, don't we? We have allowed the "darkness" to take over our governing. NUTS! Shame on the USA, shame on all of us who still vote for people to represent us who have no idea about anything good.I have many neighbors on my small street in a small city who know what is right and what is wrong. These are the people I want to "elect" to offices. So, good people in the Interior Department, choose to turn around from the darkness.BRING IN THE LIGHT!
10/24/13 Mr. Jeffery Hokans Please help us with transparency ! Thank you.
10/24/13 Mr. Jeff Ball We deserve to know how the government is managing our land. I hope youagree.
10/24/13 Mr. Eli Barrett If we are to make informed decisions as citizensof the United States we need to be informed of all things that concernour way of life and transparency is the only way. I am for EITI, I hopeyou will support this initiative as well.
10/24/13 Mrs. Barbara Warner For many years there has been little profit to the public fromextractive activites on public lands as well as overgrazing by cattleand sheep. There has been environmental damage and wildlife havesuffered also. This must stop now.
10/24/13 Mr. Bill Gardiner The US must be the world leader in all aspects ofgovernment transparency.
10/24/13 Mrs. Judith Duval Extracting companies should pay the government for what they mine onpublic lands what they would have to pay private landowners. We, thepeople, own public land and should be recompensed at the market rate. After all, isn't that capitalism.
10/24/13 Mrs. Helen Findley We need to protect our natural resources, and this is one way to do it!
10/24/13 Ms. Mary Eliades Thank you for joining the Extractive Industries TransparencyInitiative.
10/24/13 Mr. Anthony Wilson The wealthy in USA have moved again and again to hide their activitiesfrom the public, based on the very correct assumption that if we knewwhat they were doing, we would demand changes.
Only question: Will you work to protect and inform the PUBLIC, or theBILLIONAIRES? Please be one of the good guys and move to INCREASEtransparency.
10/24/13 Mr. Aubre James It is high time that the people or this world know what ishappening to them and why. This can only be accomplished throughtransparency. By the Grace of God,and submission to the Holy word ofGod. It does say in;1st Thessalonians Chapter 5;12-‐1312 And we beseech you, brethren, to know them which labour amongyou, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you;13 And to esteem them very highly in love for their work's sake. And be at peace among yourselves.Proverbs Chapter 22;7-‐97 ¶ The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant tothe lender.8 ¶ He that soweth iniquity shall reap vanity: and the rod of hisanger shall fail.9 ¶ He that hath a bountiful eye shall be blessed; for he giveth ofhis bread to the poor.
10/24/13 Mr. James Workman There is no transparency in the handling of the Publics Monies earnedfrom the sale, lease and / or other communication of a store of valuefor public lands, resources and / or any other item fixed or other wisethat is considered to be state or government managed property on behalfof the people of the United States.
This email and push will lead to no real transparency, but it will leadto a few more people knowing the names of the people responsible forthe ongoing robbery of the American People. May Justice find all ofyou, sooner than later.
10/24/13 Mr. Dan Freeman The time to do this is now. People need to know what is being done intheir name and to their land.
10/24/13 Ms. Barbara Hegedus ACCOUNTABILITY MAINTAINS RESPONSIBILITY.
10/24/13 Mrs. Mary Harmon The public is still in the dark when it comes to income from naturalresources on out public lands, and your support of the EITI initiativewill help to improve the standards for these industries.
10/24/13 Mrs. Allison O'Dell It is crazy that this has not already been done! I strongly encouragethis effort.
10/24/13 Ms. Jenefer Ellingston Our gov't has allowed extraction of public resources from public lands... since the resources were discovered. Does the public benefit fromthese sales? Of course not. The corporate profiteers get the benefit.
Finally, there's a ripple of change in the world and the corporateprofiteers will feel a breeze growing to a wind ... that will changethe way "business is done" ... maybe.Let's get on board this wind of change.Jenefer Ellingston,641 Maryland Ave. NEWashington, DC, 20002
10/24/13 Ms. H E Davis It is time that the government work for all the people of this country, not companies and the rich.
10/24/13 Ms. Ana Alvarez We deserve to know where the revenue from the public's naturalresources goes.
10/25/13 Mr. Steven Morgan The United States should of been the leader in this endeavor not the 40th, but regardless of why we haven't participated so far we should absolutely do everything necessary to join the initiative as soon as we possibly can. We have no idea with out this kind of transparency what our country is giving up or to who. Our own resources could be funding agenda's that are against our own interests. I greatly appreciate any and all efforts you can make in completing our application and joining with these other countries in allowing the truth to be easily open to the public.
10/25/13 Mrs. Deana McBride Considering most natural resources cannot be replaced as fast as we areusing them I think it is important to see who is benefiting and by howmuch. Robust reporting is important and the U.S. needs to be aworldwide leader of transparency. It is evident from the 39 countriesthat have already signed on that amazing things can happen when lightis brought to spots of darkness.
10/25/13 Ms. Gail Williams Also help support small newspapers &certified journalism so we a source of truth in our media.
10/25/13 Ms. Margaret Yovan I believe that our government may be giving away resources too cheaply, but the only way to know for sure is to actually track from the sourceto the $$. Please join EITI, and provide American citizens and ourgovernment officials with the factual data necessary to make the bestchoices for our nation as a whole.
10/25/13 Mrs. Emilie Marlinghaus It is so important to understand how the sale of the natural resourceson public lands to private corporations is subsidized by taxpayers'dollars and how little of the profits that those corporations realizeis ever returned to the public coffers. It's a criminal disgrace thatcries out to be remedied.
10/25/13 Mrs. Melodie Metje Love this idea! Corporations should not be able to take naturalresources away from publicly owned land and take all the profits.Profits should go back to the people. All of it.
10/25/13 Ms. Nancy Lowell Please go forward with this plan. I suspect a fair amount of fundsgenerated by mineral extraction on public lands does NOT flow back intothe U.S. coffers, but comes to line the pockets of certain filthy richcampaign contributors. I'd like to see that stopped.
10/25/13 Mr. Dave Kisor Now if you can only apply this to the Pentagon budget.
10/25/13 Mrs. Imgard Conley Sadly we have just been reminded of how much "The People" arekept in the dark!!!
10/25/13 Mr. David Sovey COAL = POISON!
10/26/13 Mrs. Karen Mayer Trust in the United States keeps getting lower. We need us to join EITI.
10/26/13 Mr. Dan Carpita The tax incentivies these industries are receiving is gift enough. Notonly should they be paying their market price for the wealth they areextracting from public lands, but they should also be charged for theenvironmental damage being done, now and into the future.
10/26/13 Ms. Elsie Pope Each and every American citizen has the 'right to know' all there isto know regarding what our elected persons are doing and why.
Turn up the wattage. It is the right thing to do. Please.10/26/13 Mrs. Patricia Grames Our Founding Fathers envisaged a United States where free speech means
that people can critique the government, and a free press (media) meansthat reporters are not shut out of government business. Since it isour tax money the government is spending, we have a right to know whereand how it is spent, and by whom and to whom.
10/26/13 Mr. Stephen Bailey YES!! YES!!! YES!!! YES!!! YES!!!! YES!!!! YES!!!
10/26/13 Mr. Michael Letendre We should have full government transparency.
10/26/13 Mr. John Pasqua pay up
10/26/13 Mr. G. Scott Hansen Let us be the 40th country to join this worthwhile endeavor.
10/26/13 Ms. Susanne Scott Retired Air Force
10/26/13 Ms. Kathleen Maher It is OUR future at stake, we have a right to know.
10/26/13 Mr. Mark Hayduke Grenard Be transparent about reporting on all energysources coming out of the U.S.
10/26/13 Mr. Peter Curia THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE FOR THE TRUTH.
10/26/13 Mr. Louis Albano With money for government programs and other services in shortsupply,we must not allow waste. Private companies must pay a fairshare of their profits for using the natural resources on public land.
10/26/13 Mr. Dave Bruker That being said, I highly doubt your take on "transparency".This administration's record in that regard, is pathetic. Maybe, foronce, you'll prove us cynics (and we have every right to be) wrong.
10/26/13 Ms. Alice Green And all information that the USA learns NEEDS to be shared with all ofthe people in the USA. Not kept secret like so much information thatwe have every right to know is kept secret.
10/26/13 Ms. Sara Porter What is also amazing is the number of callous individuals who would putus all at risk in order to make money.
10/26/13 Mrs. Vivianne Mosca-‐Clark Shining the light in the dark is a good way to go. No one who is beinguntruthful will want anyone seeing what they are truly doing. That iswhy deals done in backrooms with closed doors is not working out...conflicting back rooms deals. The untruthful actions of some people incongress is not helping our country. We are being made a mockery tothe rest of the world, by the selfish actions of congress and ourmilitary. This has to stop. So please continue to shine the light onthe rude actions of the few people.
10/26/13 Mrs. Imgard Conley Having just been reminded forcefully about the fact that the GeneralPublic is woefully under-‐informed about what is done by our supposedlyOpen and Democratic Government, it is even more important that thisattitude will be changed.
10/26/13 Mr. Andrew Nicholas Hidden profits from OUR resources is not something we want or need.Robust reporting is important and the U.S. needs to be a worldwideleader of transparency. It is evident from the 39 countries that havealready signed on that amazing things can happen when light is broughtto spots of darkness.
10/26/13 Mr. Paul Schutt It is time to support fair payments to ourgovernments for resource extraction by private companies. There shouldbe uniform world wide royalties for all resource extraction.
10/26/13 Ms. Lesley McCormmach The resources of public lands should be for the public at large.
10/26/13 Ms. Julie Claunch This is simply not acceptable, and we need to know the truth, and tostop the abuses. Taxpayer dollars and taxpayer property must beprotected from such scandalous acts! Please stand up and do the rightthing, stand up for us all.
10/26/13 Mr. Steven Combes STOP THE GLUTTONY!!
10/26/13 Dr. Anne Botwin I do not wish to support huge corporate profits though mining ordrilling or fracking. Robust reporting is important and the U.S. needsto be a worldwide leader in this effort. 39 countries that havealready signed on to join the Extractive Industries TransparencyInitiative. The United States needs to be the 40th!
10/26/13 Ms. Patricia Orlinski Join the 39 countries and demand transparency.
10/26/13 Ms. Mary Doino This an important issue, we know that the extractive industries have been paying very little for Native American lands, and very little goes to the people it s supposed to support. In the west of America,we have the extractive industries removing Millions, if not Billions of Ores, and oil. We have no idea how much, and if they are paying their fare share to the Government. The leases cost pennies per acre, yet there is no accountability to the taxpayers. Overseas these industries have stripped third world countries of their mineral wealth, while none goes to the residents of those countries. Governments have been bribed and the wealthy take advantage, while poor indigenous people suffer. Oftenthese people are killed if their land contains oil or gold.
10/26/13 Mr. BW Ryan This is information that all citizens have aright to know. Thanks for your efforts!
10/27/13 Dr. Susan Selbin The U.S. needs to get onboard with transparency to help restore ourreputation at home and abroad. Money enforcing secrecy has no place inkeeping the American pople informed on how our publice lands are usedand often abused by for-‐profit organizations.
10/27/13 Ms. Mary Saunders Decent corporations will support education of the public concerningoperations. Some extractive industries need to recruit conscientious new workers. An open book about how things work is a way to do this.Sharing on campuses in the states where companies operate is a way torecruit, not just from mining programs, but from CPA and businessprograms as well.
10/27/13 Dr. Dr Dorothy K Cinquemani Robust reporting is important and the U.S. needs to be a worldwideleader of transparency.
It is evident from the 39 countries that have already signed on thatamazing things can happen when light is brought to spots of darkness.
10/27/13 Dr. Nancy Newton I eagerly add my voice to urge that you all within your authority tomake this country a leader in transparency: it is the responsiblethings to do, and it is the wise thing to do -‐-‐ for the sake of thefuture of all of us.
10/27/13 Ms. Laurie LaGoe Robust reporting is important and the U.S. needs to be a worldwideleader of transparency. It is evident from the 39 countries that havealready signed on that ama
zing things can happen when light is brought to spots of darkness.10/27/13 Mr. William Gene Periard I also feel some of the fees the extractive industries pay for public
leases are far too low given current prices for raw materials.10/27/13 Dr. M B NEACE Our leadership will go a long way to make this
transparency happen.10/27/13 Mr. Steve and Mrs. Joy Durham We are really tired of corporate welfare at public expense. ENOUGH!
10/27/13 Ms. Susan Craze Dear Secretary Jewell, Robust reporting is important and the U.S.needs to be a worldwide leader of transparency. It is evident from the39 countries that have already signed on that amazing things can happenwhen light is brought to spots of darkness. I support EITI. I supporttransparency in every agency of the USA federal government. It is essential the reporting standards for extractive industries behigh and remain high.Unfortunately, the corporations who mine and drill on public land wouldnever agree to EITI. Good luck trying though.
And I thank you for supporting this initiative,10/28/13 Ms. Lynn Manzione The Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) is an
international standard that ensures transparency around countries' oil,gas and mineral resources. It is developed and overseen by a coalitionof governments, companies, civil society, investors and internationalorganisations. All of these groups are represented on the EITI Board. The EITI Standard has a robust yet flexible methodology, whichcountries adopt to address specific issues they are facing. Whenimplemented, the EITI ensures more transparency.Robust reporting is important (taxpayers don't want companies stealingthe Public's resources) and the U.S. needs to be a worldwide leader oftransparency. It is evident from the 39 countries that have alreadysigned on that shining a light spots of darkness is a benefit to thepeople.
10/28/13 Mr. Mark Fortman The only aspect of this issue I still have aquestion with is: "Why the hell was the USA, normally a leaderrather than a follower, not #1 on this list of countries to be a partof this international initiative?"
10/28/13 Mr. William Walter If the U.S. wants to be a world leader, then itneeds to lead in transparency and fairness.
10/28/13 Mr. Vincent Harriman I am all for using public natural resources, but only if I know thatthe resources are not being given away.
10/28/13 Mr. Marcus Lanskey The extractive industry must be forced to pay for the environmentaldamage and resource depletion that they cause.Robust reporting isimportant and the U.S. needs to be a worldwide leader of transparency.
10/28/13 Mr. James Roberts Reporting is a must...and the U.S. needs to be a world leader oftransparency. The 39 countries that have already signed on show thatamazing things can happen when light is brought to spots of darkness.
10/29/13 Ms. elyettte weinstein At a time when our government is cutting back and in need of funds, weneed to expose situations in which we give away our resources to thosewho don't need it. This practice regarding mining is outdated, havingoutlived its original purpose. It is no longer needed.
The public deserves to be educated regarding where its money andresources are going.
10/31/13 Mrs. Betty Chan Robust reporting is important and the U.S. needs to be a worldwideleader of transparency. It is evident from the 39 countries that havealready signed on that amazing things can happen when light is broughtto spots of darkness.
These 39 countries have already given the USA a good model to follow.Let us also do ETI.
10/31/13 Ms. Jennifer Lilienthal Public land was set aside decades ago for the benefit of the public, not private profit. Squandering our natural resources today isirresponsible, and the public should be fully informed of activities onpublic lands. Robust reporting is important and the U.S. needs to be aworldwide leader of transparency. It is evident from the 39 countriesthat have already signed on that amazing things can happen when lightis brought to spots of darkness.
11/1/13 Mr. dan ritzman In my work I rely on timely, transparent information from theGovernment related to proposed development on public lands I supportEITI to ensure that this process improves.
11/3/13 Mr. Richard Creswell Complete, accurate, and unbiased accounting of value taken from ourpublic lands is critical to development of our community property. Weneed to see that we are not giving away the store, or our kids future. The US should lead on this international issuye.
11/4/13 Ms. Zorka Milin In particular, the US EITI should include community impacts and itshould cover project-‐level reporting as required by the new EITIstandard. The US EITI standard should be consistent with the EUDirectives as well as Dodd-‐Frank §1504.
Ms. Karen Hartman It would be about time!
11/7/13 Dr. Josiah Heyman Robust reporting is important and the U.S. needs to be a worldwideleader of transparency. As a scholar and influential community figurewho has worked on extractive resource issues, I support thisinitiative.
11/7/13 Dr. Patricia K Townsend As a researcher, I have been working on the issue of transparency indeveloping countries but as a citizen, I realize that we have no clearidea about this for our own country.
I suspect from my own research on mining overseas that Canadian miningcompanies, for example, are racking up substantial profits in US mineswhile leaving environmental debts for American taxpayers to cope within the future, but without this robust reporting I would now know howto document any of this.
11/7/13 Mr. Jim Parris This is true overseas and here in the UnitedStates and also for the production on Indian reservations across ourcountry. We need transparency to be enacted in order to allow us allto "follow the money" and see what is being collected andpaid out from the royalties, bonuses, lease rentals and any other feesrelated to the production of natural resources.
11/8/13 Dr. S. Thomas Bond As a native of West Virginia I have seen the externalized cost such ashealth effects, accidents, environmental cost and the destruction ofprivate property due to unchecked and barely regulated mineralexploitation. It ties people up so they have few alternatives to helpthemselves and leaves a society of ignorant, defeatist citizens.
At a time when the population is increasing world wide, we need toevaluate our resources diminished by mineral extraction and the loss ofecosystem services
11/8/13 Ms. Marilyn McDaniel Clear, concise, and jargon-‐free reporting is important and the U.S.needs to be a worldwide leader of transparency. It is evident from the39 countries that have already signed on that progess will happen whenlight is brought to spots of darkness.
11/9/13 Ms. julie claunch We also need these industries to be heldaccountable, and any unjust profits returned to the American people.
11/11/13 Ms. Natalie Atherton The public deserves to know that we are getting the benefits of theextractive industries, since we are forced to assume the risks to ourhealth, our communities, and the environment.
11/12/13 Ms. Jean Hricik Just as I am dismayed that the U. S. refused to sign on to the UNdeclaration of water as a fundamental human right, I have been deeplyconcerned with the superimposing of capitalism over democracy as a U.S. policy.
http://www.democracynow.org/2010/7/29/in_historic_vote_un_declares_access
Corruption in government is flaming. Transparency has been lacking forfar too long. Attention to human and environmental rights must bemaintained over corporate/governmental greed and power-‐grab.
11/13/13 Mrs. Susan Mikosz It is important to know who really benefits. Iwould want to know!!!
11/13/13 Mr. Ross Spears I am a producer for PBS television in the U.S. and I make documentariesthat include information about energy and resources. We badly needmore transparency in the this area. Please give the American publicthe information it needs to make proper decisions for the future!!
