This Month’s Message: "Not Gone Anywhere" by Rev. Tomozo Hirano

After the passing of Her son, Oyasama spoke in his place, saying:

“My soul is embraced by the Parent. I have simply cast off an old garment.”

The Life of Oyasama, p. 113

Clickety-clack. Clickety-clack. The passengers on the train are enjoying the changing landscape outside their windows—the sun rising over the sea, shining hills and fields in bright daylight, skyscrapers at sunset, and so forth. The only thing is that they do not know how much further their tickets entitle them to travel. Will the journey still continue for a long time or will it come to an end soon?

Such, in fact, is our life journey. From time to time, some of us may wonder what will happen to us when we die and, perhaps, become apprehensive. Yet what about before we were born? What were we doing? And where? After all, it has been hundreds of millions of years since the beginning of humankind.

We have no recollection of worrying about whether we would be able to be born smoothly. When we first became aware of our surroundings, we were already living in this world. This should assure us that, just as we did not worry about our birth, we do

not need to worry about our death because, after all, everything is in the loving hands of God, the Parent of all humankind.

There are people who are desperately looking for a way to avoid dying. On the other hand, there are those who wish they were dead. Yet everyone will die sooner or later. Humans can only live for so long. Why not enjoy the “now” when we are alive? We can enjoy the gifts of nature such as the cold winds of winter, the warm weather of spring, the bright sun of summer, and a stunning array of autumn colors. Rather than worry about how much further we will be able to travel on the train, we would do well to enjoy the ride while it lasts.

Besides, it is not as if the railroad tracks would suddenly come to an end at the edge of a cliff. When the time comes for us to get off the train, we can do so with peace of mind. Also, we can put on new clothes and get on another train to embark on a new journey. Life’s railway continues on.

It is thanks to God’s providence that children grow up. It is also thanks to God’s providence that our bodies weaken as we age. We can delight in growing old—and in passing away for rebirth.

Isn’t it wonderful to partake of life?

Appearing before You, God the Parent, Tenri-O-no-Mikoto, I (Shugo Yamanaka) Bishop of the Mission Headquarters of Hawaii speak with reverence on behalf of the Hawaii congregation.

God the Parent, You revealed Yourself to this world by receiving Oyasama as the Shrine, taught us the truth of origin of all things and the Service as the path of single-hearted salvation, thus laying the very path to guide us toward the Joyous Life. We are living in joy and high spirits as we feel Your blessings each and every day. At the same time, we are putting forth our efforts to grow spiritually to accord with Your intention. Today is the day we are granted to conduct the June Monthly Service at this mission headquarters. We the service performers will unite our hearts as one to perform the Seated Service and the Dance with Hand Movements joyously in high spirits, while earnestly praying for world salvation. We will be joined by our brothers and sisters of the Path in Hawaii who have gathered here today, in singing the Songs for the Service in unison and high spirits. As You watch us, we hope You will be spirited as well.

On the 27th of this month, one person from Hawaii will be completing her 3-month-long Shuyoka life in Jiba and returning to Hawaii with a renewed awareness as an instrument of Oyasama. From today, the 45th Hawaii Spiritual Development Course will be held at Dendocho. The 4 participants, along with the instructors and Dendocho staff, are determined to make utmost efforts for their spiritual growth. The annual Tenrikyo Picnic will be held on July 4, through which we hope to strengthen the bonds and unity of our congregation. Also the Oyasato Seminar will be held in Jiba next month with 4 students attending Course I and 4 attending Course III from Hawaii. They all shall earnestly and spiritedly learn and implement Oyasama’s teachings.

Responding to Your desire to hasten world salvation, we Yoboku vow to further accumulate sincere and earnest efforts so as to advance the construction of the Joyous Life World. Especially, as we have been shown a big knot of the physical disorder in the body of the Shinbashira who is the core and leader of our Path, all of us continue to pray earnestly for his recovery. At the same time, each of us shall ponder deeply over God the Parent’s intention conveyed through this, thus resolving our mind ever more strongly to devote ourselves in our respective roles and positions for the tasks of the Path in Hawaii.

May You, God the Parent, accept our sincerity, and we ask that You guide us further toward the advancement of the Path in Hawaii and the reconstruction of the world into a truly peaceful Joyous Life World, even a day sooner, where everyone will come to know of the Parent of Origin thus awakening to the truth of universal brotherhood & sisterhood and live together in harmony helping and caring for one another. Together with all present, I sincerely pray that You bless us so.

Good morning and Happy Father’s Day!We have just completed the June Monthly

Service in high spirits and I believe God the Parent and Oyasama are delighted with our performance.

Before I begin, I would like to ask all of you to join me in praying for universal salvation and the speedy recovery of the Shinbashira.

After being appointed this sermon, I felt a lot of pressure and could not decide on what to talk about until, suddenly, one day, I had a flashback from my childhood years. I remembered going to someone’s ceremony in Jiba and seeing a commemorative writing hanging in the hall. It was similar to the inspiring handwritten commemorative writing with the red borders that are hanging here at Dendocho written by the former Shinbashira, Zenye Nakayama, and the present Shinbashira, Zenji Nakayama. It seemed like the commemorative banner I remembered was larger than the ones here but maybe it was because I was child back then. This commemorative writing that I saw was handwritten by the 2nd Shinbashira, Shozen Nakayama. Although I wasn’t able to read kanji at the time, it made me feel like a world filled with joy and excitement. When I asked my older sister or someone that was sitting next to me what was written on the commemorative

writing, I was told it read: “Fire, Water, Wind”. Since it was during the ceremony, I just stared at it rather than think of what it meant. Nevertheless, I suddenly recalled these words written by Shozen Nakayama and remembered that it gave me joy and excitement, to the point where I felt like dancing.

Although everyone here knows the meaning of fire, water, wind and understands its importance to God the Parent’s providence, please allow me to explain about this again.

Regarding Fire, Water, Wind, God the Parent’s words are written in the last chapter of The Life of Oyasama, “The Portals Opened”. I will now summarize what occurred prior to event.

Oyasama became ill in early January of 1887. Through the affliction of Oyasama’s illness, God the Parent urged the performance of the Service. However, if the Service was performed, followers were subjected to immense police oppression

and further suffering for Oyasama due to the possibility of a prolonged detention. The worried 1st Shinbashira, Shinnosuke Nakayama, frequently asked God the Parent about how to proceed in this situation. These accounts were written in the Osashizu for several days.

In the Osashizu on January 13, 1887 it states:

Sah, sah, because Tsukihi exists, the world exists. Because the world exists, things exist. Because things exist, your bodies exist. Because your bodies exist, law exists. Although law exists, to resolve your minds is primary. Sah, sah, where there is sincerity, you shall receive sincerity. You may not know what My sincerity is. It is my providence – fire, water and wind.

January 13, 1887“Because Tsukihi exists, the world

exists.” “It is my providence-fire, water and wind.”

In the natural phenomenon of this world, “Fire, Water, Wind” refers to the sun, rain and wind.

In Hawaii, this seems to be taken for granted as we experience blue skies, blue oceans, white clouds, bright sun, and the trade winds blowing on a daily basis. Also, at times, we are blessed with rain in the form of showers but for the most part it clears by night. This serene weather is the blessing of God the Parent and it makes me realize that Hawaii is paradise.

However, in some cases, the serene

weather suddenly changes and nature threatens us with disasters that occur from storms and typhoons, stormy seas, tsunami caused by earthquakes in distant places or on the sea floor, and earthquakes caused from volcanic eruptions.

Thunder, earthquakes, great winds and floods: these are from the regret and anger of Tsukihi.

Ofudesaki (VIII-58)There have been several tsunamis

that hit Hawaii in the past and in 1992, Hurricane Iniki ravaged the Island of Kauai. The tremendous damage caused by this hurricane is still fresh in my mind.

Furthermore, this year, there was a big flood on the northern part of Kauai, and on the Big Island, lava continues to erupt with no signs of stopping. Although I’m grateful for God the Parent keeping the loss of lives to a minimum, I feel sorry for the all of the people that are suffering from this disaster. However, what’s important is that we reflect on ourselves and figure where the regret and anger of God the Parent lies.

How does Fire, Water, Wind relate to our bodies and what is the truth of a thing borrowed? Fire pertains to the warmth in the body, water pertains to the various body fluids, especially the blood that circulates in the body and wind pertains to breathing and speaking.

So long as you remain unknowing that the body is a thing borrowed, you can understand nothing at all.

Ofudesaki (III-137)

Page 6: Originstenrikyo-hawaii.com/origins/2018/Origins-201807.pdf · humankind. We have no recollection of worrying about whether we would be able to be born ... Water, Wind, God the Parent’s

6 7

First of all, we must be aware that our bodies do not belong to us, but is borrowed from God the Parent.

Incidentally, there was a NHK series titled, “Human Body” that aired from September 30, 2017 thru March of 2018, broadcasting 8 shows a month. The hosts for this show were “Tamori”, a Japanese comedian and Shinya Yamanaka, the Nobel Prize winner in the Natural Sciences field that discovered IPS or Induced Pluripotent Stem cells. Each broadcast was divided into different body parts ranging from the heart, kidney, fat, muscle, bone, intestine, brain, birth of life, etc. I was impressed with how easy it was to understand the functions of each body part of the human body as the program was produced by using videos of the latest micro 3D electron microscope collected from around the world, thesis and explanations from the most advanced scientist from various scientific fields and the use of computer graphics.

Since I unexpectedly started watching this series from the beginning of this year, I missed the opportunity to watch the other broadcasts that aired previously and could only watch the 4 broadcast featuring: the bones, intestine, brain and birth of life.

In the broadcast, it asked how many bones make up the human body? Roughly 200 bones. Bones are not just to support the body but it affects your memory, immunity, muscular strength and energy.

The intestine is referred to as the 2nd brain, and when you uncoil the intestine,

it stretches out to 20 tatami mats long and it is said that 70% of the 2 trillion immune cells in the whole body are located in the intestines. It is explained that the intestines takes ordinary bacteria and converts it into immune cells and trains them.

Furthermore, what is important and recently discovered was that each organ, which has its own message substance, mutually exchanges messages with each other to preserve ones health. For example, if your heart gets tired for whatever reason, the heart lowers the body’s blood pressure. This is called “Paradigm Shift”. Also, if the kidney needs oxygen and exchanges messages with the bones, the bones make blood right away. Our bodies are controlling the messages between organs. It is explained that the organs are dynamically exchanging messages between each other and this huge network are protecting our lives.

If we think of one organ as a human being, we can communicate with each other, help one another, and all together, we can see the Joyous Life materialize within our bodies.

In regards to the broadcast on the brain and the birth of life, I felt as if each scene was like a miracle. This body that we borrow from God, a body that is created by God the Parent, has reached the microscopic world and finally, we are able to deeply understand the perfect workings of our bodies. Presently, it seems that humans can only reach the level of the

Page 7: Originstenrikyo-hawaii.com/origins/2018/Origins-201807.pdf · humankind. We have no recollection of worrying about whether we would be able to be born ... Water, Wind, God the Parent’s

6 7

microscopic world. I believe we are still far away from advancing from the microscopic world and understanding the workings of God the Parent.

To Tsukihi, everyone is My child, whoever you may be. Though I have been watching over you with nothing but love, Ofudesaki (XII-88)For God the Parent, all human beings

in the world are his children. Even those suffering from illness or troubles are breathing and earnestly being provided the providence of fire, water, wind. This is due to God the Parent’s parental love for all of his children. Let’s be sure to feel God the Parent’s parental love and realize the workings of fire, water, wind.

Also, one day there will be a time when we will not be able to receive the workings of fire, water, wind. This is called passing away for rebirth. Passing away for rebirth does not mean disappearing to somewhere far away but rather returning to the bosom of God the Parent. After borrowing a new body, you return to this world with the purpose of realizing the Joyous Life. There is nothing to be scared or worried about. The “Parent becomes a child and the child becomes a parent” and people that were closely related in the past will probably be closely related again in their next life.

Although the providence of fire, water, wind reaches far and wide throughout the world, God the Parent resides in the Jiba, the place of the origin of this world. God the Parent and Oyasama are waiting

for their children to return home. Let’s try to return to the Jiba more than once, and bring more than one person. Most importantly, in July, the Oyasato Seminar will take place for high school students and the Children’s Pilgrimage will take place from July 26. You will be amazed at how spirited the souls of these children and young adults will be when participating in these programs. They can experience the Jiba with their own bodies. They will receive something special or important when returning to Jiba. Although it’s probably difficult to make travel plans with end of year is fast approaching, I hope you consider taking your children to the Jiba in the near future.

The providence of Fire, Water, Wind, without it there is no world, no human beings. Having learned about God the Parent’s overflowing parental love towards his children through God the Parent and Oyasama, I believe it is our responsibility to always settle this in our minds and relay it to other followers of the path.

To Tsukihi, all of you in the world are My children. Though My thoughts for you are filled with love,

Ofudesaki (XVII-68)Thank you very much for your kind

attention.

I love pasta and nothing beats real noodles but for those who are up for a healthier option, zucchini makes a nice substitute. This recipe has all the goodness of a good lasagna recipe and a great alternative for gluten free diets. Zucchini has a nice dense texture that I just love. Please feel free to make substitutions to fit your palette as well. I hope you enjoy this recipe as much as I did.
