orionlx overview | 9
High Performance CPU
The optional OrionLX High Performance CPU provides two to three times more speed and processing power than the standard OrionLX CPU. It is intended for larger automation applications, notably transmission substation applications with large SCADA databases, extensive math and logic, many webpages and encryptions.
Relay Data Retrieval Simplified
NovaTech currently provides over 200 pre-engineered SEL® “point pick lists” (or “Default Files”) to simplify the process of selecting points from SEL® relays. When new SEL® relay models are introduced, NovaTech Engineering, or the user, creates a new Default File for that specific new relay model. Relay Helper is including in the SEL® Master protocol (order code #14).
Intuitive PLC-Like Programming
IEC 61131-3 is the international standard for programmable logic controller (PLC) programming languages and specifies the syntax, semantics and display for five languages. Multiple language support in IEC 61131-3 enables the control program developer to select the language that is best suited to a particular task.
VGA Touchscreen Monitor
A rugged VGA Touchscreen Monitor is available for the OrionLX, eliminating the need for a substation PC and its inherent software and Cyber Security hassles. Webpages served from the OrionLX, and applications supported by the OrionLX (terminal mode, screen capture, text editing, etc) can be viewed on this VGA Touchscreen when OrionLX is equipped with the optional Multimedia Board. Note this monitor works both as a touchscreen monitor and with a keyboard/mouse at the same time.
Multimedia Board
The OrionLX Multimedia Board (MMB) allows direct connection of VGA video, a USB keyboard, and a third Ethernet port to the OrionLX, eliminating the need for a costly Substation PC and its associated NERC CIP headaches. Traditional Substation PC-based HMIs are one of the most expensive components in a substation automation system due to increased hardware, software, training and maintenance requirements. The MMB together with Orion WEBserver HMI and Direct Video, all costs are reduced.
Secure Web-based SCADA in Your Hands
Orion WEBserver is a web-based SCADA and local HMI solution that uses open-source web technologies to build interactive screens accessible from standard web browsers. A browser can connect to an Orion and view data from connected IEDs and RTUs. Displays can range from a single text-based screen to detailed substation one-line drawings with multiple password protected drill-down screens for viewing IED data or establishing a pass-through connection with the IED. WEBserver has pre-configured pages for Data Archiving/Sequence of Events Recording, Alarm Annunciation, one-line diagrams, IED faceplates, control screens, alarms, trending, and communications diagnostics.

NovaTech offers three models of substation-hardened I/O
modules. All are designed to reliably operate over a wide
temperature range (-40oC to 70oC) in electrical substations, and
to withstand high levels of electrical noise from fast transients,
electrostatic discharge, and radio frequencies. All operate with
common substation battery voltages: 24V dc, 48V dc, and 125V dc.
No conversion relays are required. Discrete inputs and analog
transducer inputs are electrically isolated from each other,
ensuring compatibility in retrofit applications. All outputs
are relay-grade, suitable for directly operating switches, and
energizing breaker trip coils. Discrete inputs quickly sense state
changes and are provided with filters for use in 1ms SOE time-
stamping applications.
