12 :: publisher’s note

Summer is here and we continue to see the economy picking up despite some up and down ‘glitches’ of stock market volatility. The “new normal” will take some getting used to but the overall long-term trend is on the upswing.

Soccer fans are enjoying World Cup ac-tion and basketball fans are witnessing per-haps the most overpowering Magic team ever–so we dedicate this month’s cover to Dwight Howard, the explosive center for the Orlando Magic, a dominant athlete of reckoning. Our fans are thrilled to have this great Magic team and look forward to them bringing the NBA Championship to our fair city.

Sports aside, we at Orlando Style enjoy casting ‘personalities’ in different lights not seen before. We visited Dwight in his lovely home, teamed him up with his favorite fash-ion ‘look’ and snapped a few pix. As you will see, the dapper Mr. Howard is meticulously well-dressed and scrupulously neat and

tasteful in his wardrobe selection; you can read more about Dwight on page 32.

Our new website has received lots of praise. StyleToMe.com is a great portal to your fa-vorite city magazine and we now offer Or-lando Style’s digital version (digi-style) free to all members. Just register and access it each month online and receive weekly spe-cial offers, event invitations and news as an extra bonus, with lots of prizes available to win. Make StyleToMe.com your homepage, stay abreast of up-to-date happenings and become a part of the fashionable in-crowd of the city!

Let’s hear your two cents about things at: [email protected].

> Crystal Cruises is announcing yet an-other industry first: one-night excursions to Russia’s former top secret Cosmonaut training Center, Star City. From extreme G Forces and weightlessness to the “Final Challenge” in the world’s largest hydrospace laboratory, intrepid Crystal guests can train like modern Russian Cosmonauts on some of the largest, most advanced space equip-ment in the world.

Four distinct Crystal Adventures, available from St. Petersburg with five Crystal Sym-phony summer Baltic voyages, take guests to Star City, built in the secluded forests outside Moscow:

• Hydrospace: “The Final Challenge” – Con-sidered the most advanced cosmonaut training, participants must install a space antenna on a replica of the international Space Station while wearing an authentic space suit and submerged in 54,000 square feet of water.

• Centrifuge G-Force Experience – On the ride of a lifetime, experience the simulat-ed G-forces of blast off, flight in orbit and spacecraft descent on the specially-reserved 300-ton centrifuge.

• Zero Gravity Weightlessness Adventure – Aboard the world’s largest parabola aircraft, experience the absence of gravity. Flying in a steep parabola formation from as high as 20,000 feet, participants literally take flight at least 10 times during this adventure.

• Russia’s Quest Beyond the Earth – Delve into the behind-the-scenes highlights of cosmonaut training and Russian space travel from the 1950’s and beyond.

the Cosmonaut programs include round-trip air transportation from St. Petersburg to Moscow, overnight hotel accommoda-tions and a full-day Moscow city tour, in-cluding Red Square and the Kremlin.

“two years in the making, the Cosmonaut-training Adventures are further examples of how Crystal works with worldwide partners to craft unique and innovative pro-grams,” says John Stoll, director, land pro-grams. “‘Extreme adventures’ satisfy guests’ desire for profound experiences that push the limits.”

Extreme adventure comes with a price. Cosmonaut training fares range from $4,359 up to $32,995 for “the Final Challenge.”

Seven-, 10- and 11-day Baltic voyages depart from London, Stockholm or Copenhagen –with overnights in St. Petersburg. Promo-tional two-for-one per person (double oc-cupancy) cruise fares start at $4,375, includ-ing $500 or $1,000 ‘All inclusive – As you Wish’ shipboard credits and free air trans-portation from numerous north American gateways – Business Class air for Penthouse guests.

Charity Talk With Anthony Anderson

By: Dana Damato

Read more at: StyletoMe.com

> on a beautiful Friday morning in Cel-ebration, FL, actor Anthony Anderson sat comfortably on a rocking chair and rested up for the 7th Annual Celebration Exotic Car Festival. this year’s Exotic Car Festival is being held to benefit the Special olym-pics, and Anthony Anderson couldn’t be more thrilled to be in orlando to help raise awareness for the cause. Q: Is this the first time you have been involved in the Exotic Car Festival? A. yes it is. My friend, Jeff ippoliti organizes the event. he got in contact with me and wanted to know if i would be interested in getting involved. i heard about the event before and i was really happy to get the chance to come out. Anything i can do to bring my celebrity name to charity and help raise money, especially as big as the Special olympics, i always try to be a part of it. it’s all about bringing awareness of the children and of the Special olympics. Q: Are you involved in any other charity? A: i am involved in several, one being for dia-betes. i am a diabetic myself and i lost my fa-ther to the disease. i also support a home in Carson, California called Charlotte’s house. it’s a home for battered women and chil-dren. i am one of their main contributors and have been for about 7 years. Q: What do you like to do the most when you come to Orlando? A: i play a lot of golf whenever i come to orlando! Q: Where do you play? A: i love playing in isleworth and Bay hill. i was supposed to play this weekend with

Arnold Palmer. Whenever i come to or-lando it’s usually always to hang out with friends and play golf. i also have a tV show on the Golf Channel called Golf in America. So when i’m in orlando it is usually for golf. Q: About your acting career, what are you work-ing on right now? A: i’ve been a part of Law and order now for the last 3 seasons. they are tied for the record of the longest running one-hour drama in television history. i started on SVu, but now i’m on the original. i also have a new film coming out next week. it’s called the Back up Plan, and J.Lo is my co-star. i am also filming a movie in Canada with Jack Black. Q: Have you always wanted to be an actor? A: Actually, no. Growing up i wanted to be either a lawyer, a football player for the Dal-las cowboys, or an actor. i realized at the age of 9 that if i was an actor i could be all three of those things. Since then i have played a lawyer and a football player! Q: So last but not least, tell me about your love life! A: i’m married with two children. i have a 14-year-old daughter and 10-year-old son. i’m a simple man with simple pleasures. Q: Any last words for our readers? A: i love coming to orlando. it’s a beautiful city, very scenic! Enjoy the weather!<

> orlando Magic center, and 2009-10 nBA Defensive Player of the year, Dwight howard has been rubbing shoulders with the elite talent in the nBA since entering the 2004-05 nBA Draft right out of Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy (SACA). Elected by a panel of the nBA’s 30 head coaches, Dwight tops a list of five super players including the likes of Rajon Rondo, LeBron James, Kobe Bryant and Gerald Wallace on the nBA’s 2009-10 nBA All-Defensive First team.

the statistical accolades are many but this spe-cial athlete brings a lot more to the table than outstanding numbers. Born in Atlanta not quite 25 years ago to Dwight Sr. and Sheryl howard, Dwight came equipped with some exceptional

athletic, academic and spiritual genes provided by his parents. Dwight Sr. was a Georgia State trooper and the Athletic Director of SACA, while Sheryl howard was a former member of the Mor-ris Brown College women’s basketball team.

During howard’s early childhood, he dreamt of one day being the top pick in the nBA Draft, a dream realized when the Magic selected him with the first overall pick in the 2004 nBA Draft. the Magic drafted howard over university of Con-necticut power forward Emeka okafor, a seasoned favorite with 4 years of Big East basketball experi-ence including a national Championship.

As a seventh grader in 1998, the big, strong and quick howard ran the SACA offense as a point guard but quickly transitioned to power forward on the varsity team by 2000 after sprouting to 6’10” almost overnight. the fast transition from speedy point guard to a 6’10” forward was nearly seamless, as howard already possessed the quick hand and footwork ability necessary to posting-up opposing players. these skills presented the Magic with a golden opportunity to groom a new nBA center and by the beginning of his second season with the Magic, Dwight had ‘beefed up’ another 20 pounds of pure muscle, along with another inch or so skyward.

Although the team failed to make the playoffs by only 3 games in howard’s sophomore season, the Magic improved from 21 wins in 2004 to 36 wins

in 2005 and 36 wins again in 2006. not since losing Shaquille o’neal in 1996, have Magic fans enjoyed the luxury of having their own intimidating big man at center and in the 2006-07 season things began falling into place with the Magic making the playoffs for the first time since 2003.

Although the Magic was swept by the top-seeded Detroit Pistons in howard’s first playoff series, Dwight continued to blossom and the following season was selected to the Eastern Conference All-Star team.

the 2007-08 season brought big changes to the Magic as new head Coach Stan Van Gundy helped guide howard and the Magic to a 52-30

record. having home court advantage in the playoffs for the first time since the 1998-99 season, the Magic eliminated the toronto Raptors 4-1 but fell to Detroit in the second round, 4-1. 2008-09 saw continued improvement as the Magic finished the regular season 59-23; this time going all the way to the nBA Finals before bowing to the Lakers 4-1.

Dwight earned his first nBA Defensive Player of the year award in 2009, amassing 13.8 rebounds and 2.92 blocks per game. A further testament to his overall athletic ability was cemented with his 20.6 points per game scoring average of 57.2 percent shooting from the floor.

this brings us to the present. the Magic fin-ished the 2009-10 regular season 59-23, match-ing their previous year’s record. After a first round sweep of the Charlotte Bobcats and the Conference Semifinal sweep of the Atlanta hawks, the Magic appears to be picking up steam. With a second straight selection as Defensive Player of the year, chalking up 13.2 rebounds and 2.78 blocks per game, complemented by a scoring average of 18.2 points per game, Dwight howard has once again proven to be a strong leader and we wish him and the team good health and continued success. <

> the first in a range of high per-formance sports cars from the home of the worlds most successful racing car company, the McLaren MP4-12C is set to re-write the rules of sports car design through Formula 1-inspired engineering, revolutionary chassis architecture, and absolute focus on efficiency.

the McLaren MP4-12C represents pure McLaren; from unique engineering to its bespoke design – where everything hap-pens for a reason.

the McLaren MP4-12C is the first in a range of high-performance sports cars from McLaren Automotive, the indepen-dent car division based at the McLaren technology Centre in Woking, England. the 12C, and future models within the range, will challenge the worlds best sports cars, benefiting from the expertise and virtuosity of the McLaren Group.

All the parts of the McLaren MP4-12C are bespoke and unique to this car. Ev-erything from the engine right down to the tailor-made switches and buttons is pure McLaren: nothing has come from another manufacturers parts bin.

the 12C is powered by a bespoke McLaren M838t 3.8 litre, V8 twin-turbo engine producing around 600bhp, driving through a McLaren seven speed Seam-less Shift dual clutch gearbox (SSG). it is targeting not only new standards for power and performance in its sector, but also class-leading fuel economy and Co2 emissions; supported by McLarens experience of active aerodynamics to aid cooling, grip, handling and road holding. thorough engineering and market re-search led to concept development and a clear decision in favor of a mid-engined two door high performance sports car. intensive work was carried out in the wind tunnel and the driving simulator to ensure that the new car would inher-ently have superb dynamic qualities.

Dick Glover, McLaren Automotive tech-nical Director, was closely involved with the development of these invaluable tools during his time with McLarens For-mula 1 race team.

“there are so many examples of race car process and technology transfer in the 12C,” claims Glover. the car owes much to McLarens experience and suc-

cess in motor sports. “the advantage of technology transfer is only one element; speed of decision-making and develop-ment, F1 processes and people all make an important contribution.”

“Brake Steer, for example, is a technol-ogy we pioneered on our Formula 1 car back in 1997. it helps to dial out under-steer on entry to a corner and improves traction on the way out. Another is the Pre-Cog function on the gearshift rocker that effectively primes the gearbox for the next change, ensuring a more satisfy-ing and faster gearchange. this is a high performance sports car with race car genes and teamwork at its heart.”<

> 1. Stay Tip-Top All Year. the standard restaurant tip is still 15% to 20% of your pre-tax bill (if you’re dissatisfied with your server, leave 15% anyway and tell the man-ager why you weren’t happy.) But other service providers should get a little extra, too. For taxi drivers, figure 10% to 15%, depending on whether they help you with your bags. Valet-parking attendants should get a buck or two once they return your car-unscathed. hair stylists and massage therapists should pick up an extra 15% to 20% per visit-with the exception of the owner, whose pride would be offended, says etiquette maven Judith Martin (also known as Miss Manners).

Be generous with people who provide you with good

service all year long. But don’t fall for the tip jar.

2. Don’t Let a Tip Jar Send You on a Guilt Trip. you see a tip jar at your lo-cal coffeehouse or sandwich joint and you suddenly feel like hamlet: to tip or not to tip? unless you get great service, there is no need to tip the barista at Starbucks. if there’s a jar at the carwash and the crew gives your ride a little extra tLC, consider leaving something. But don’t feel obligated. “it’s up to you whether you want to throw some change in the jar,” says Lizzie Post, great-great-granddaughter of Emily Post. “if you’re a regular customer, tip on occasion.”

3. It Gets Tricky When You Travel. Sky-caps at u.S. airports get $1 per bag. Cabin stewards on a cruise ship leaving from a u.S. port usually get $3 a day (but look online to see whether service is included). once you arrive overseas, check your guidebook to see what the local custom is. in Western Europe, you generally leave a nominal tip if you really liked the food and service, to say “thank you” and to show appreciation at a restaurant, or you don’t need to tip at all. usually the tip (or service charge) is already calculated in the price. if not, consider leav-ing about 10% in an upscale restaurant. At a pub in the u.K., instead of tipping the bar-tender, you might offer to buy him a drink. in Denmark, you’re not expected to tip servers or taxi drivers, says fashion designer Kate Spade in her book Manners (Simon & Schuster). And if you ever make it to ice-land, Spade writes, don’t even think about tipping a waiter. it’s considered rude.

4. Maybe Give a Little More this Year. yes, tipping is discretionary. But the reces-sion has changed the rules. Consider open-ing your wallet a little wider now, especially if you experience superior service. Why? the workers you tip are at the low end of the pay scale. “Everyone’s watching his or her pennies, but these people need tips even more,” says Lydia Ramsey, business-et-iquette expert and author of Manners that Sell: Adding the Polish that Builds Profits.

5.‘Tis the Season. Just about anyone who serves you during the year should get a token of appreciation. the norm for your nanny and house cleaner is a week’s pay. your mail carrier is not allowed to accept cash, but you can give him or her a gift val-ued at $20 or less. your newspaper carrier, trash collector and uPS driver should get 20 to 25 bucks. Appropriate gifts for hair stylists (whether they own the shop or not) include the cash equivalent of one ap-pointment or a nice bottle of bubbly. if you have kids in school, don’t give the teacher cash–it could be construed as a bribe. Sug-gest that all of the parents chip in for a gift certificate. <

> Why do I have to remind people that Orlando is a happening place? It may not be as weird as Austin, but it certainly belongs on the list with hip and cool cit-ies like Seattle and Portland. We have the Orlando Magic, Disney World AND we’re getting the NBA All-Star Game in 2012. Not to mention that this month was full of great charity events, fashion and style. Where to begin: Luxury shopping and cocktails combined when David Yur-man and Ronald McDonald House held a charity cocktail event at the DY store in the Mall at Millenia. This event helped to raise money for programs that provide assistance for children who are hospitalized–while showcasing their gor-geous jewelry and timepieces.

Speaking of great charity events, if you love fashion and didn’t know what to do after the end of Season 7 of Proj-ect Runway, you would have loved the runway show for Fashion Funds the Cure on May 7th. Saks Fifth Avenue at the Florida Mall hosted this incred-ible fashion and charity event to raise money for children with pediatric cancer. While there are plenty of great cocktails and hors d’ouevres, the highlight of the event is the children battling cancer, who courageously walked the runway. NBA great Julius Erving attended alongside local Celebs like Joey Fatone, Buddy Dyer and Alan Grayson. Mark and Josie Nejame helped to put this fabu-lous event together, along with local restaurant sponsors, including Copper Canyon Grill and Vines Grille and Wine Bar.

If you love amazing photography, then you can’t get better than Snap! This fantastic 4-day photography exhibition, that included works by the unbelievable photographers Garrett Yamasaki and Lionel Deluy, kicked off with a fabu-lous VIP Party at Global Gallery. Our own Orlando Style helped sponsor this snappy event that also featured the auction of an autographed iconic photo of Marilyn Monroe that was taken by

Douglas Kirkland–another one of the photographers whose work was on dis-play at Snap! No need for us to repeat: We had a great time at this event: when is Patrick Khan going to put something like this together again? We hope Snap! is a new tradition for Orlando photography lovers.

Going on at the same time as Snap! was the Orlando edition of the Fringe Fes-tival. The Fringe Festival concept grew up in Scotland in 1947 and is now in its 19th year in Orlando. If you’ve missed it the last 18 years, the Fringe Festival is a 12-day theater festival that features some of the most interesting and bizarre theat-rical performances that any town could offer. And because the festival is unjuried, the variety of content and quality perfor-mances that you can see at Fringe varies–widely. While we always try to see all of the shows, we’re glad that it’s only once a year–a show a day after 12 days is ex-hausting. Looking for a break from Fringe, we head-ed over to Velvet Sessions to catch the Psychedelic Furs. If you love great mu-sic and creative cocktails in VIP venues, Velvet Sessions is an awesome alternative to Orlando’s usual music scene.

May was a great month for a lot of things: music, fashion, photography, theater, style––the list goes on an on. We had a blast! We’re looking forward to next month, where there’ll be even more hot parties and charity events. Thankfully a lot of the best events for June and July take place in cool spots with even cooler mixed drinks.<

> It’s good to be a man. You tend to be judged on more than just the sum of your parts.

Women are often attracted to men who aren’t classically handsome: Think Tony Sopra-no and Jerry Seinfeld.

What’s sexy to us can be quirky, and it often is. Physi-cal beauty aside, cleanliness is king. And nothing gets a guy the royal treatment quicker than some basic good groom-ing. Trust me; women adore the clean shaven, fresh scent of a man much more than his primped and preened coun-terpart.

When it comes to the hair, there are no hard and fast rules. Well, maybe a few. Nose hair? Trim it. Ear hair? Ban it.

We’re less concerned with the hair on your head than you may think. Bald, blond or buzzed, what makes the man is so much more than his fade - or lack thereof.

That said, a unibrow has wrecked even the most rugged

of good looks. Plus, having hair in the wrong places is much more of a turn off than not having hair in the right places.

Trim nose hairs at least twice a month with an electric trimmer such as the Turbo-Groomer 5.0 from ($59.95). The same trim-mer can be used to trim hair in the inner ears as needed. Use the interchangeable miniclipper to trim the ear’s outer edge at least once a month.

Unibrows must not be ignored. Here’s a simple test: Place your pointer finger be-tween your eyebrows; if there’s hair there it’s time to divide and conquer.

To banish too much brow hair I recommend tweezing. Try not to shave, guys. (Although it’s better than doing nothing.) Use slant-

ed, stainless steel tweezers to remove hair from the root. One to try is Tweezerman’s automatic tweezer; the tip automatically closes and retracts to painlessly remove hair ($9.95 at Folica.com).

Maintain the hair you have in the right places with Gage for Men. Whether in the shower, or in the gym bag, Gage for Men products make a statement with sophisticated pack-aging and effective formulas.

Face it. No matter how much gel you use, a man’s hair is more like a man’s mess by the end of the workday. This product excels at cleansing even the greasiest of hair. With the clean scent of spearmint, Gage’s Hydrat-ing Hair and Body Wash maintains soft skin while the Daily Conditioner leaves the hair and scalp refreshed and ready for action.

My man has been known to indulge in a massage and he’s no neophyte. He knows what he likes and won’t accept less. His pick is usually a 90-minute sports massage. Pedicures? He’s game. Some men won’t let anyone near their feet. It’s not pretty. I sur-veyed my girlfriends and compared to some of the funky male feet we’ve seen, a man in a pedicure throne is hot.

So gentlemen, if you’ve found this article tucked in your briefcase or even left open on the kitchen table, take note; someone’s trying to tell you what a girl wants. Pay at-tention and you just may get what you want. And that’s a beautiful thing.<

> Greg Shugar, lead designer of TheTieBar.com, the largest private label brand of neckties on the internet, known for their $15, 100% hand woven silk ties, is offering tips for how men can dress to shed pounds.

“Men are always looking for shortcuts on how to look slimmer without having to diet,” says Shugar. “It’s all about fit and pro-portion.”

Shugar’s tips for dressing right to look ten pounds lighter:

• Wear fitting but not tight clothing. Your clothing should have enough room to fall/drape but should not be baggy.

• Avoid bold patterns in ties and shirts, as they will draw attention to your upper and mid section. Choose more muted or solid colors or simple patterns.

• Dress proportionate to your body type.

For example:

Don’t wear lapels on your suit that are too narrow for your body type but don’t wear ones that are too wide. If you are thin or short, wear skinny ties. If you are heavier

wear longer ties with a wider width. Skinny ties will only make heavy men look heavier.Heavier men should stay away from bowties as they draw attention to their chins.

• The V neck cut on shirts, vests or sweaters give the appearance of a slimmer neckline and longer torso. Avoid turtlenecks as they cause the neck to disappear completely.

• A three-button blazer will elongate and slim your frame.

• Wear wide shirt collars for regular ties and narrower collars for skinny ties.

• Wear a belt to draw in at your waist.

• Avoid horizontal and diagonal stripes in ties, suits and shirts as they will widen and shorten your frame.

• Stand up straight.

• Keep shirt tucked in.

• Keep jacket buttoned while standing to keep the gut hidden.

• And finally, empty your pockets - bulging pockets add to hip size and can give the ap-pearance of a pear-shape.<

> Recently, on talk radio, the issue as to whether or not a police officer could just walk up to anybody and demand that the person present some identification was debated. Some thought that citizens must show identification to police when asked and that it may even be a crime not to have identification on you at all times. Others felt the police couldn’t ask us for identifi-cation and that we don’t have to identify ourselves to law enforcement at any time for any reason. After all, we have the right to remain silent and not tell the police any-thing, including our names, don’t we? The answer to this question is a definite maybe, and depends on the circumstanc-es. Generally speaking, the courts recog-nize that there are 3 levels of encounters between police and citizens. The first and least obtrusive is the “consensual encoun-ter”. This is where an officer approaches a citizen and makes a request, i.e. “Can I see your ID?” The officer in this situation has no reasonable suspicion that the person is committing a crime, but for whatever rea-son, wants to initiate contact with the per-son. The citizen is free to comply with the officers request, ignore the officer and walk away, or tell the officer there is no way on earth he is giving the officer his or her ID. The officer has the right to ask; the citizen has the right to walk away.

The second level of interaction between citizens and police officers is called an “in-

vestigatory stop”. This is when an officer actually detains a citizen, and that citizen does not have a legal right to walk away. In order for an officer to make an investigatory stop, the officer must have a well founded, reasonable, articulable suspicion that the person they are detaining has just commit-ted, is in the process of committing or is about to commit a crime. In this instance, if the officer does indeed have this “reason-able suspicion” that the person is involved in a crime, the officer can detain the person and demand that the person identify them-selves. However, since there is no law that currently mandates that we carry personal identification with us at all times (not yet anyway, but I won’t be shocked when that law passes), identification sometimes can simply be accomplished by providing a name and date of birth. However, citizens should not give a false name as many officers have laptops in their patrol cars and can quickly pull the driver’s license photo of the name given. If the photo on the laptop does not match the name given, under certain cir-cumstances, the person could be arrested for giving a false name or resisting arrest without violence. This is true even if it is determined that the officer’s “reasonable suspicion” that the person was committing a crime ended up being not true.

The third and final level of interaction is when the officer is making an arrest. As in the “investigatory stop”, the citizens are re-quired to identify themselves.

So, if you’re approached by an officer who wants to ask you questions and you don’t really want to strike up a new friendship at that moment, simply ask the officer if you are free to leave. If he says yes, you may leave and go about your business (or con-tinue on in your slacking off) and walk away. If you are told that you are not free to leave, ask the officer what reason he thinks he has to detain you. Make sure you let him know that you know your rights and you’re not acquiescing to his unreasonable and uncon-stitutional demands. Then, when you pick yourself off of the ground and dust yourself off, don’t forget to ask the officer if you can have your ID back.<

> One of the area’s biggest attractions is its year-round mild weather. At the heart of the “Sunshine State,” many Orlando hotels, resorts and water parks offer unique ways to enjoy our famous weather at an excep-tional value with special Orlando Magicard® deals on over-the-top pools, exciting rides, water slides and more. And with an array of unique Fourth of July celebrations, Orlando is gearing up for some hot summer fun. All of our theme parks come alive with spe-cial shows celebrating the Fourth of July, and Floridians can save a considerable amount with Magicard deals at the parks. Down-town Disney® celebrates with a street party and patriotic music by live bands. En-joy fireworks at Universal CityWalk® with activities for families and a preferred view-

ing area on the lagoon stage. Or check out the free fireworks display and laser show at Lake Eola in downtown Orlando. Residents and visitors alike pack picnic baskets and comfortable blankets for an old-fashioned summertime picnic. And don’t miss the 50th Annual NASCAR Coke Zero 400. This race has been an Independence Day week-end tradition for nearly five decades, and this year’s event promises to be the best one yet. For a smart way to get away from home at a great value, spend your day at the rock and roll-themed pool at Universal’s Hard Rock Hotel® which features a 240-foot water slide and an underwater audio system. Swim the lagoon past the Royal Bali Sea, a fictional shipwreck situated in the sands of the zero-entry pool, at Loews Royal Pacific Resort. At the Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress, en-joy 12 free-form waterfalls, two waterslides and a swim-through grotto. Or at the Grand Bohemian Hotel’s canopy-draped rooftop pool, swim with crystal chandeliers posi-tioned overhead. At Disney’s Blizzard Beach Water Park, Cross Country Creek lets you cool down as it takes you on a tour of the entire park.

You can use this tranquil waterway as a transport to get from one area of the park to another. Or grab an inner tube and float along the Lazy River attraction at Wet ‘n Wild® Orlando. Gently glide under rope bridges, past lush orange groves to The Springs, where you’ll find a rushing water-fall. Then take your tube to the surf in the 17,000-square-foot Surf Lagoon Wave Pool. And no back-yard getaway in Orlando is complete without a visit to Aquatica – Sea-World’s Waterpark™ – a one-of-a-kind park that includes up-close animal experiences, high-speed thrills and wide, sandy beaches. Another local option is The CoCo Key Ho-tel and Water Resort – the newest in our array of water parks. Designed to transport you to the tropics of Key West, CoCo Key features three water slides, The Coconut Grove lazy river, Palm Paradise spa and in-teractive play island Parrot’s Perch. Other attractions will include the Minnow Lagoon toddler pool, CoCo’s Beach, and Coral Reef Cove — a pool created just for teens. With so much going on, savvy Florida residents are sure to find the best deals and enjoy the latest travel trends in Orlando; while stay-ing cool in one of the world’s top summer destinations.<Gary Sain

> In our March 2010 issue, we presented our first in a series featuring “Elite Doctors” in the Orlando area. In this month’s issue, we concentrate on Doctors of Optometry (OD) and Doctors of Ophthalmology (MD), both being providers of vision care.

Most colleges of Optometry first require successful completion of a four-year undergraduate degree beginning with courses in Gen-eral Biology and Chemistry, Algebra and Trigonometry, followed by advanced studies in Organic Chemistry, Microbiology, Bacteriology, Calculus, Physics, Physiology, Biochemistry, Anatomy, etc.

OD candidates must then successfully complete an additional four-year accredited degree program at one of the twenty (20) colleges of Optometry, so the educational investment is extremely rigorous, time consuming and also requires a substantial financial commit-ment.

Optometrists perform examinations to diagnose vision problems such as near or farsightedness, test for depth and color perception, ability to focus, glaucoma and other eye related conditions caused by diabetes or high blood pressure. Although they do not perform eye surgery as in Ophthalmology, OD’s prescribe and fit eyeglasses, contact lenses, certain medications to treat vision problems or eye diseases and provide vision therapy and rehabilitation.

Ophthalmologists, on the other hand must be medical doctors (MD’s) prior to studying Ophthalmology, then they must complete a three to five year residency in an approved program and must pass an examination to become certified. Ophthalmologists are li-censed for all aspects of eye care including diagnosis, management and surgery of ocular diseases and disorders. He or she receives a minimum of 12 years of education beyond high school.

We are pleased to present a pristine collection of specialty eye care physicians practicing in our area. <

Dr. Margaret Grand is a graduate of The New England College of Optometry in Boston, Massachusetts. She is in partnership with her husband Dr. Ron-ald Grand. Both are Board Certified Opto-

metric physicians. Their daughter Michele Grand works with them and is a Florida Board Certified Optician.

Dr. Margaret Grand did two internships at Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem, Israel. One internship in pathology, and the other in pediatric low vision. Before moving to Florida she had a private practice in Newport, RI and was on the staff at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in Boston, Massachusetts. After moving to Florida, she was asked by the developers of Celebration if she and her husband would open a practice in Celebration and be the eye doctors there. They opened the practice in 1996. While in Celebration they have worked with Florida Hospital at Celebration Health participating in their Health Fairs. They also have worked with Disney in fitting many of their characters with contact lenses and have done one film and supplied eyewear for several commercials. They currently work with the Atlanta Braves while they are here for Spring Training. Dr. Margaret Grand is a member of the American Optometric Association and the Florida Optometric Association. She has served as an examiner for the Florida Board of Optometry. Dr. Margaret Grand is past president of the Rotary Club of Celebration and past president of the Celebration Area Council for the Osceola Chamber of Commerce. Celebration Eye Care is located in beautiful downtown Celebra-tion. It is a primary Optometric practice for the entire family.

Dr. Grand feels all family members should have annual compre-hensive eye examinations. In children, as they grow and develop, their eyes grow and change. While they are in school there is a great demand on their visual systems, if the children can not see it, they can not learn it. For adults, it’s like having an eye physical, for there are many things that can go wrong with the eye that are painless. In their eye exami-nations, Celebation Eye examines the whole visual system including the gen-eral health of the eye. They examine and follow patients with cataracts, diabetes, and other systemic diseases that can af-fect the eye. They treat and follow pa-tients with glaucoma, macular degenera-tion, dry eyes, Latisse treatments, and do all pre and post opera-tive care for Lasik. Celebration Eye Care specializes in contact lenses. They fit regular and color contact lenses and also fit cosmetic lenses for patients who have disfiguring eye diseases or eye injuries. They also fit lenses for astigmatism, bifocal, and theatrical contact lenses. Their optical is a beautiful area consisting of over 1000 frames to choose from. They carry many designer frames and sunglasses. Some of the designers carried consist of Dolce and Gabbana, Gucci, Giorgio Armani, Dior, Cole Haan, Versace, Burberry, Jimmy Choo, Prada, and Oakley. They offer all types of lenses, coatings and tints to accommodate and customize all visual needs, includ-ing sports, computer, driving, reading and hobbies.

GAt our practice, we strive today to continue the same high standards that were established when the practice was founded by Dr. Charles A. Bayshore, one of the early pioneers in the development of contact lens-es. Over time, the professional associations grew and became know as Drs. Bayshore, Swanson, Sowes, Lee and Yager O.D., P.A. and has now earned an international reputation for contact lens design and eye care service. The retirement of Drs. Bayshore, Sowers, Swanson, and most recently, Dr. Lee left Dr. Yager as sole remaing partner in 2004. Although we have seen many changes over the past sixty five years, our commitment to quallity patient care has always been a constant.

Dr. Jack J. Yager received his BS from Ohio University in 1969 and his doctor-ate from the Ohio State College of Op-tometry in 1973. He is past president of the American Academy of Optometry and a Diplomate of the Cornea and Lens Section of the AAO. Dr. Yager lectures all over the world on various subjects, and he is an Adjunct Assistant

Professor at the University of Missouri, St. Louis. Dr. Yager has 31 years of Optometric/Contact Lens experience, specializing in the hard to fit and bifocal lens patients and pre-op and post-op Lasik patients.

Our Optical department has a licensed Optician on staff for profes-sional and courteous eyewear consultation. We have a large selection of designer frames to choose from and for better customer service we have a lens laboratory on the premises. Our office has all the latest bifocal and computer lens types and we can demonstrate the most recent technology in lens enhancements.

“Anatolia...combines the best of two wonderful Middle Eastern cuisines: Lebanese for the appetizers and Turkish for the en-trees. The sum of these parts is one really terrific restaurant.” –Scott Joseph, Orlando Food Critic

“It’s a rare occurrence when one restaurant brings it all together: Great showcase of food at an affordable price; impeccable service; a casual bistro feel, but with a brush of class for a nice evening out and a meal that’s both vegan and carnivore friendly.” –Heather McPherson, Orlando Sentinel

> Usher Raymond, known by all as Usher, has wowed the R&B music scene with his lively and relevant sound since his self-titled debut album in 1994. The 32-year-old art-ist recently released his hyped-up seventh album Raymond v Raymond, a musical jour-ney through the struggle Usher approaches when confronting the two different sides of his life—the glamorous music world where he remains a prime entertainer and sex sym-bol, and the reality of his day to day achieve-ments and disappointments. The album’s sound includes a mixture of Usher’s 2004 al-bum, Confessions, and his 2008 album, Here I Stand. Many of the songs are dance tracks that encourage more than a little hip shak-

ing, but any mood can be reached with this album that also explores tender subjects. The song “OMG” from Raymond v Raymond reached # 1 on the Billboard Top 100 chart in May, making it his ninth number one hit. The song, featuring Black Eyed Peas’ beat master Will.i.am, has a catchy beat and repeating phrases reminiscent of great R&B songs, and essentially goes through the emotions felt as Usher sees a beautiful woman dancing in a club. On the flip side, “Guilty” shows the mixed emotions of a man dealing with two different worlds, emphasizing that honesty is only one facet of a successful relationship.

Usher has been dominating the R&B scene for over a decade. He received his first recording contract at the age of fourteen after being spotted by an agent at a talent show in his home-town of Atlanta. Since then he has won fame with hits such as “You make me wanna”, “You got it bad” ,“Yeah!” and “Burn.” According to his official website, Usher became the first solo artist to have three singles in the top 10 of the Billboards Hot 100 Chart. Earlier this year the cheerful and generous singer appeared on different shows including Ellen Degeneres, Good Morn-ing America, and American Idol promoting his new album and mentoring the Idols. Usher’s charisma and knowledge set him apart as he merges a hip sound with light and heavy themes. On his website, Usher describes his new album as a balance of “the perception and the person.” He uses his music to help fans understand that he is a real man who deals with the sometimes-unstable dichotomy that has women and “wild nights” on one side and his “emotions, loves and real life experiences” on the other. The album was actually recorded in two different American cities- Las Vegas and Atlanta- that conceptually represent the theme of perception versus real-ity. Atlanta clearly embodies the reality side of the equation, as Usher’s Georgia hometown where he sang in the church choir prior to being discovered. Usher’s interests extend beyond the front of the music scene. As a producer, designer, and businessman, he has been spend-ing as much time in the boardroom as he does on stage. He’s tried his talented hand at acting, and succeeded, appearing on television, in movies, and even in “Chicago” on Broadway. His website quotes him as being motivated by legends Bob Fosse and Sammy Davis Jr. Usher explains, “They were triple threats- dancing, acting, and singing. It really inspired me. I want to live up to that title and showcase all of my talents and be able to say I’ve experienced it all, and had fun in the process.” He is well on his way to experiencing it all as he co-owns the Cleve-land Cavaliers basketball team and sells fragrances for men and women at department stores. Usher now has his own record label, US Records, and has recently been busy helping Justin Bieber, his latest musical discovery. The Emmy winner’s national tour dates for Raymond v Ray-mond are still a work in progress, but be sure to listen for his modern and energetic sound on the radio as “Lil Freak”, “Hey Daddy” and “OMG” work their way up the charts.<

Can a woman’s body ever return to its pre-pregnancy shape after childbirth and breastfeeding?

Many women find that no mat-ter how much they diet and exercise, and even if they lose all of the weight they gained, they are still not happy with their figure.

The abdominal wall may have weakened or even separated, pockets of fat may have lodged in the stomach, hips, thighs or flanks, the abdominal skin may have stretched, and after pregnancy and breastfeeding, the breasts may have deflated and sagged.

For many, the Mommy Makeover is the solution.

The Mommy Makeover is not a specific procedure. It’s a com-bination of procedures or treatments tailored to your unique needs. It may include breast augmentation, breast lift, tummy tuck, laser treatments (for skin changes, including melasma), and liposuction. You might even be interested in laser hair removal to simplify your busy life!

The costs, recovery time and results will vary for each indi-vidual. A consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon is the first step in answering these questions.

Your surgeon will help determine if your expectations are reasonable and develop a plan for your Mommy Makeover. We usually recommend that you wait six months or more after having a baby before considering cosmetic surgery. This gives your body and your life a chance to return to normal after delivery.

In general, your results will be best if you are at a stable weight, do not smoke and have finished breastfeeding. If you are planning to have more children, you should wait to have your makeover.

>One thing Bill Segal wants to hear from Orange County residents is: “I like my Cos-mo?” The Orange County Commissioner is not talking about the popular ladies drink of choice, but rather the city in which they choose to live. While the cities of Miami, Atlanta and Charlotte might be attracting young professionals, Segal wants Orlando to be the cosmopolitan drink of choice, if you will. And if elected as Orange County May-or, Segal will work to create more job op-portunities, continue to reduce crime while supporting local law enforcement, and be the leader this county needs and deserves. During these difficult economic times, Se-gal understands that the city of Orlando is

running on limited resources. The number one thing to do, he says, is to create jobs. As a businessman himself for nearly forty years here in Central Florida, Segal says he is the best candidate to understand budgets, manage people and speak the language of business. “Business and economics is my hobby.” Something most people don’t know about Segal is that he owned and managed seven successful chains of the restaurant Chin China, employing 100 people. He wants voters to ask themselves who they would like sitting in front of the next CEO who is thinking of bringing his or her business to Orlando. Segal claims his opponents are not

businessmen or women and will not know how to evaluate the components of a busi-ness or manage a business the way he can. Segal states confidently: “We need the next big job creator and that’s me.” With more jobs come more opportunities for families to stay in Orlando and not trav-el to a more ‘cosmopolitan’ area. One way Segal believes Orlando can transform and be competitive with the Miami and Atlanta markets is the SunRail, a commuter rail that will eventually run from Deland to Poinci-anna connecting Central Florida and making it easier to commute. The creative class, as Segal likes to call the men and women in their mid twenties, want to live in an urban area where they can hop onto the SunRail to go to work or downtown…or both. On the topic of crime, Segal shares that crime is down and is concentrated within four areas of the county. He wants to make sure that the deputy budget is not cut and either increases or at least is maintained. One way he feels this can be achieved is to raise the booking fees at a jail from $5 to $50 and to charge $2.50 in the jail instead of $1.50 for per diem, which essentially goes towards food purchases. This would create approximately $4 million more dol-lars for the law enforcement’s budget. He pinpointed Pine Hills and Paramore as areas needing the most attention but believes the picture is bright. When asked about his feelings on Amend-ment 4 – Hometown Democracy, it was clear which way he was siding. Against it.

Amendment 4 is a ‘proposed citizen amend-ment’ to the Florida Constitution that al-lows the city’s citizens the right to vote on the local comprehensive plan, which focuses on land-use such as whether or not a new subdivision will be built. The idea behind the amendment is that instead of politicians and boardmembers having the final say as to what will be built, they will now have public involvement. While some of Segal’s opponents support the change and believe the residents should have a voice, Segal says, “I’m against it. It’s going to be a job hurdle. Businesses looking to come to Orlando to expand are not going to want to go through the hoops and hurdles of Amendment 4 and they will go to Georgia, the Carolina’s, or Alabama. It is ill conceived and a miserable idea.” Segal works to be a good person, family man and hopes to be a good mayor to Orange County. He believes he is the best leader for the job and one of the only candidates who will work closely with the mayor of the city and the other counties. “You can’t be a loner and be a good leader,” Segal says when referring to one of his opponents who he suggests doesn’t play nice with oth-ers. When working with the city govern-ment, everyone must meet half way and he feels he is the best for that job. His public service record is astounding, serving as the founding director for the Coalition for the Homeless, former member and chairman of the St. Johns River Water Management Dis-trict and as a member of countless other services in his hometown.

In the coming months before the August 24th primary, Segal will continue to walk neighborhoods, connect with volunteers, continue raising funds for television, radio, and other advertisements for the fall cam-paign and to continue staying in front of is-sues, especially law enforcement, which he says is “near and dear to my heart.”

The trend setting Orlando Style already knew 7 years ago that the new and im-proved Orlando would be the next hot cosmopolitan city and Segal agrees that our name says it all. For more information on Bill Segal and his campaign, visit www.billsegal.com. <

> Marrakech, Morocco–People who know about Jew-els’ one-of-a-kind designs call themselves “addicts”...and with good reason. There’s just something about Jewels’ necklaces, bracelets, earrings and rings that au-tomatically transport the wearer to an exotic place and time. Her masterful style of hand weaving fine antique tribal elements–amber, coral, shells, turquoise, gold, North African silver, coins, talismans, trade objects–into hip and sophisticated wearable works of art.

Spending her time between Santa Fe, New Mexico and Marrakech where she opened a design studio just over one year ago (not to mention her various excursions to North and West Africa, South America, S.E. Asia, Indonesia, Tibet, China, India, Afghanistan and Yemen collecting jewelry-worthy artifacts), Jewels has been creating masterpieces for more than 25 years. Her following is more of a cult phenomenon. Histori-cally, she’s been known to set up trunk shows for her small bohemian enterprise at swanky hotels in Los Angeles and New York where clients just came out of the woodwork to purchase her wares...east and west coast elite, intellectuals, fine art collectors, young entrepreneurs. Even celebrities such as Sheryl Crow, Orlando Bloom, Candice Bergen, Ali MacGraw, Patri-cia Arquette and Adrien Brody have been enamored with the beautiful, rare and extraordinary power of Jewels’ designs. That power is in her imaginative use of tribal elements (many of which are 100 years old and older).

About Jewels, the designer

The daughter of an Air Force pilot, Jewels spent her formative years growing up in Tripoli. She traveled ex-tensively with her family from Tunis to Tangiers and re-calls endless wanderings through exotic market souks

with her mother. Struck by the beauty of the coral, amber, silver and gold – all the wealth of North African families – she says, “I was hooked.” After her education in Europe, Jewels spent many years traveling, living in India, South America and again in North Africa expand-ing her education of jewelry design and knowledge of cultural artifacts...and always collecting.

Through the opening of her Marrakech design studio last year, not only is Jewels finally able to present her designs to a broader audience, she has opened up opportunities for young, educated women who oth-erwise have limited work and benefit options living in Morocco to become skilled silversmiths and bead weavers. Coming out of this studio is some of her greatest work yet.

> Rankin knows what he's talking about. A former probation officer, family and addiction counselor, and television host who holds an advanced degree in psy-chology, Rankin worked the graveyard shift as a door-man at the 5,000-room MGM Grand hotel for six years. A memoir of sorts, his book tells the true story of this turbulent period in his life.

The sheer excitement draws you in. If you've ever been to Vegas, you know that it is, quite simply, intense. The colors are vivid, sounds constantly bombard you, and you're always surrounded by a diverse mass of people. You might be sitting near a group of beautiful women having a "ladies' night" out on the town, or you might be mingling with a celebrity at a bar. The level of excite-ment is always very high. It's impossible to be bored in the midst of all of the spectacle and pageantry, and The Best is right at your fingertips: the best restaurants, the best shows, the best parties.

"The primary allure of Vegas is that there are no boundaries," Rankin says. "There is no clock, no last call, no line in the sand. You can do what you want, whenever you want, with whom you want. You're free to stay out all night and bet it all. Your fantasies are right in front of you...and when you can indulge in them without repercussions, it's almost impossible to

say no. Vegas has been designed that way for a reason, and it's true—what happens in Vegas really does stay there. Unfortunately, the consequences of indulging in your wildest desires stick around long after the thrill is gone.”

That "casino cachet" is calculated—right down to the carpet color. Nothing about a casino—its layout, its color scheme, its music, the placement of its staff—is left to chance. The patterned carpets, alluring noises, and lighting are designed to keep the senses stimulated. And heaven forbid that "unlucky number 13" makes an appearance! You won't find it anywhere—not on room numbers, and certainly not a 13th floor. <

> Mankind today has become more in tune with technology and money than hu-man emotion; but there is one creature that has and always will be a connection to the better part of man: his dog. A dog may not be able to make a sandwich or pay the bills, but when a man wakes up and his dog greets him, he doesn’t care. Men need someone in their life who understands them completely. A dog won’t judge. They may not know why you’re upset, but it’s a guarantee that they will sense your pain or joy, and ride it out with you the whole way.

A man will only truly cave over three things: his love, his child and his dog. When those great big eyes look up at you from below, you can’t help but give him a hug or pat on the head. Dogs don’t complicate things with fancy meals or designer sweaters. They’re content just to sit beside you on the couch or on the floor. They want to walk or run with you in the great outdoors. A dog can keep a man alive, giving him purpose and re-sponsibility, as well as love and affection.

Men often see themselves as natural provid-ers and protectors. This sense of loyalty and strength is shared with their dog, an animal that will do anything for those that love and care for him. Dogs will bravely chase any number of smaller creatures (and foolishly chase any number of much larger creatures) to prove his loyalty to his master. It isn’t hard to imagine a dog circling the back yard over and over again just waiting for one of those squirrels to set one paw on the bird feeder. Every entertaining and touching thing your dog does will only strengthen the bond you share.

Just know that anytime you are lonely or ec-static, your dog will always be there for you. Dogs are truly “Man’s Best Friend.” <
