Parent’s Corner by Beth Gambel, Orleans Parish 4-H Coordinator Welcome to the Orleans Par-
ish 4-H newsletter!
We in Orleans Parish are turn-
ing over a new leaf! We have
a brand new staff of three 4-H
Agents. Cristina Santi is lead-
ing our Mentoring and Charac-
ter Education program, Casey
Versailles will give leadership
to the traditional general 4-H
program and Veronica Del
Bianco is giving focusing on
leadership, citizenship and
environmental science. Hen-
drix Broussard, our Southern
University Youth Development
agent, gives leadership to the
agricultural projects with em-
phasis on school gardening and
poultry projects.
We hope that your child has a
wonderful 4-H experience and
that you will see the benefits
gained from their belonging to
this organization. 4-H is the
world’s largest youth organiza-
tion where children pledge
their Heads, Hearts, Hands,
and Health to improve their
lives and the lives of others.
Though 4-H experiences our
objectives are to help children
use their HEAD to make ap-
propriate decisions, their
HEART to learn how to re-
spect and care for themselves
and others, their HANDS to
serve their families and com-
munities; and their HEALTH to
be the healthiest person they
can be.

Success Preparatory Academy (SPA) is dedi-
cated to developing college-bound students
for leadership and lifelong learning. By
partnering with 4-H, they have additional
support to
assist them in
accomplishing
their mission.
Together, 4-H
agents and the
teachers of
Success Pre-
paratory Acad-
emy are teach-
ing the 4th and
5th grades students about citizenship, lead-
ership, and civic engagement using 4-H cur-
riculum.
The students’ first lesson was about defining
the qualities of a good leader and determin-
ing if they wanted to be a club officer.
Club elections will be held by early Decem-
ber. Expect them to be spirited, said Upper
School Dean Erik Kelt. Enthusiasm is on of
Success Preparatory Academy’s core values!

Harvest time is coming soon and
the youth at the naval air station
will be ready to reap the fruits of
their labor. They did a thinning on
November 8, 2011 in the collard,
cabbage, and shards beds. They also planted
Detroit Red beets and Dinner Lettuce. A
tasting will be scheduled in the month of
December.
The B.W. Cooper Y.E.S. club planted a
youth community garden of on the front
lawn of the Earhart Blvd subdivision. The
group planted romaine lettuce, cabbage,
green onion and collards. Marry Atkins a
nutrition educator teaches to the children
the nutrition facts of the vegetables they
planted. When the crops are ready a vol-
unteer from the community will cook
them and have a tasty day of nutritional
foods. - Hendrix Broussard

Did you know…? 4-H’ers across the nation are responding to challenges every day in their communities and their world. As the youth development program
of the nation’s 109 land-grant universities and the Cooperative Extension System, 4-H fosters an innovative, “learn by doing” approach with
proven results. The 4-H Study of Positive Youth Development, a longitudinal study conducted by the Institute for Applied Research in
Youth Development at Tufts University, shows youth engaged with 4-H are:
Nearly two times more likely to get better grades in school
Nearly two times more likely to plan to go to college
41 percent less likely to engage in risky behaviors
25 percent more likely to positively contribute to their families and communities.
