MESSAGE FROM PASTOR SMITH AUGUST 2019

CORNERSTONE

The Christian faith is one of constant growth. God

Himself feeds the faith of His children. We learn

about life by inwardly digesting His Word. Clarity

regarding who we are, God’s love, and our place in

the world comes from this divine Word. The culture

around us has its own ways. Vain philosophy of one

sort or another is constantly held out for us to

embrace. It has been said that the devil’s greatest trick

was convincing the world that he doesn’t exist.

Beneath all false religion and the contemporary

gyrations of our culture is the devil and his lies.

Jesus said: “If you hold to my teaching you will

know the truth and the truth will set you free” (John

8:32). Freedom is the path to contentedness, peace,

confidence, and being able to take our stand against

the devil and his schemes (Ephesians 4:14; 6:11).

God’s Word is our great heritage, the church’s holy

inheritance. Our time in study of this Word is a

priceless time of pure edification, pure strengthening

of our souls. Our children too profit immensely from

familiarity with God through His Word. They too are

strengthened for life in this broken world in the very

best way through the Word of Christ. Our Sunday

School and Adult Bible Class are premier classrooms

for successful living. Faith is fed and fed well on our

campus. To God alone be the glory.

Our Adult class will take up three wonderful

topics in the coming months. First, for the next few

weeks we will examine the theology of worship, the

origin of the liturgy, and the Biblical precedent for

various parts of the liturgy. The effect will be to

understand afresh the delightful nature of the Divine

Service and how God is active among us to give us all

that is necessary for our salvation.

Second, starting September 8th, we will engage a

resource from the Synod titled: Everyone His

Witness. This is an evangelism primer that takes the

mission of the church and presents it to every believer

in a way that is prehensible and natural. I have

previewed the content of the series and it is lively,

down-to-earth, and memorable. I very much look

forward to sharing this well crafted series with our

Bible Class.

Third, we will address a topic very much in vogue

among us – creation vs. evolution. Unlocking the

Mysteries of Genesis is the resource that we will use

to address this issue. What this will show us is the

scientific evidence that confirms Genesis as a

chronological record of God’s creation. Our

understanding of what the scientific world says in

support of the Biblical record is invaluable and we

should be well equipped after participating in this

study.

You can see why I am so excited for what the

coming months has in store for us and our faith. A

vibrant and rewarding time in study is a constant

reality at Christ the King and the future looks bright

for our happy fellowship. Be a part! Treat yourself to

what is good and your soul will delight in the portion

which God has granted you.

In July Stewardship Committee members met at Ross and Sandy Cooper’s home in Redlands to present them with a new water heater. Thanks to the weekly offerings from the Adult Bible Study (January through June for $1084) and Thrivent Financial (for $250), Mike and Ross took a trek to Lowes to order the water heater. It was first announced that a washing machine is what the offerings were to purchase. However, between the time they told us of their need and the time the total funds ($1334) were available, their washing machine broke. So with the monies, we actually paid off the washing machine and bought the much needed water heater.

The Coopers open their home every Sunday to homeless men and women for worship, Sunday meal, showers, and washing their clothes Thank you all for contributing to this couple who brings the Love of Christ in Word and deed to the homeless of Redlands. If you have the time, you should go visit the home of Ross and Sandy on any Sunday to see the beauty of God’s love that they share with all who come to their home.

MEET YOUR TEACHER SUNDAY – AUGUST 12

CHURCH GREETERS NEEDED

The Board of Evangelism is recruiting

members of the congregation to be present

in the Preschool/Kindergarten classrooms

on Meet Your Teacher Sunday on August 11, from 10:30am

to 12:00pm. The goal is to welcome parents to our school

and to share information about our church. We have been

doing this now for the past three years and it has been well

received by all participating in this event. Teachers say they

feel supported by the church and it helps to have another

person in the room visit with parents while they wait to

meet the teacher. Congregation members say it gives them

an appreciation of the sterling quality of our teachers and

the richness of the education and activities provided for the

students. It is a great opportunity to share what our church

has to offer and invite new members. We need at least 14

volunteers to cover all the classrooms. If you are interested

in serving as an ambassador on behalf of the church and

school, please sign up in the overflow today! Thank you.
