Congratulations to Emma and Callie for being the highest fundraisers for our annual Terry Fox Run, earning the “Principal for the

Day” experience raising $2450 as a team. Our school fundraising goal was $2500 and with the help of all the students and our

supportive community we raised $3232.25 for the cause.

Dear Parents, Guardians and Community Members, Welcome back to another year of Working, Caring and Succeeding! I am so excited to work with this talented staff, and serve in community with all of your amazing children. I have heard many wonderful things about this beautiful place, and the friendly people here have been so welcoming. Thank you! I want to in turn welcome all parents, families, and community members into our school. We love seeing you at events, celebrations, or library time. Your presence in our school makes such a difference in the quality of educational experience for your children. September has been a busy month, with a successful start-up, Terry Fox Run day and Picture Day already accomplished! As part of our School Safety Plan, we have already conducted our first Fire Drill of the year, and we will continue to work on processes to keep our students safe in the event of an emergency. We are also encouraged to think about our home safety plans: do you have an escape route and planned muster point at home? Welcome back everyone – I hope you enjoyed a great summer and I wish you all a wonderful 2017-2018 school year. Thank you in advance to parents, families, community members, organizations and businesses for your time and involvement in education. Together we are able to provide students with a wide range of engaging learning opportunities in safe and caring facilities and we are grateful for the collaborative nature of our school communities. Your involvement makes a significant difference in the overall operation and atmosphere of our schools as it also translates to a strong sense of community and support. This is noticed and greatly appreciated by students and staff and we thank you for all you do. As always, our focus is to ensure that students are provided with engaging learning experiences that cultivate deep learning, inner reflection and of course, find ways to make learning enjoyable for students. Specifically, we will continue to implement the Response to Intervention process in all our schools, flexible learning environments in our high schools, wellness initiatives and technology integration. We are committed to ensure students are provided with opportunities to work as a team, to be mentors, leaders, and get involved in the community. With the guidance of our dedicated staff, students are provided with the support and conditions that allow them to reach their full potential in all they do. Hello From Your Library

This summer we ran a Reading & Lego Club and had some outstanding results with our reading contest. The top prize winners were Ryker (read 3864 pages), and Logan (read over 2400 pages)!! Thank you to all who participated, and congratulations to each winner!

The library has seen a few changes over the summer. We have many exciting new reads for all ages, with several more on the way! We’ve also acquired some wonderful new furniture that has been well received by all. A shout-out to Kaylee for helping with the inspiration for our new look; a huge thank you those who’ve contributed to the library (books, DVD’s, Lego, toys, decorations, etc.); and thanks a ton to Teegan and Karson for the awesome bean bag chairs!

Youth Education Support at Worsley Central School

Heather Butler is back again as Worsley’s Youth Education Support Worker (YESW) for 2017-2018. She is here to help teachers teach students skills for good mental health; help students connect to adults; and help and encourage students, families, staff, community, and businesses to work together and develop skills so everyone can enjoy good mental health.

Mrs. Butler can usually be found in classrooms working with teachers to teach skills such as mindfulness, building and maintaining healthy relationships, social skills, and stress management. She also runs smaller group programs including Girls’ and Boys’ Groups, and Rainbows & Spectrum Grief and Loss groups. Sometimes Mrs. Butler meets one-to-one with students to work on specific goals. Students can meet with Mrs. Butler one-to-one only if they have signed consent forms from parents/ guardians. All students have been sent home with a One Visit Consent Form. By signing this form, parents give their child permission to see Mrs. Butler for one visit to help with any concern that may come up during the current school year. Parents or guardians will be contacted to obtain consent if additional visits are needed. Please sign this One-Visit form and return it with your child to the school. Parent Teacher Interviews—November 15th

Welcome to Kindergarten!! We have been very busy with stories of summer and our families. It seems everything we do relates to some memory we have, but most importantly we are getting to know each other. In Social we are doing a unit on “all about me”. The children have discussed many different ways that they are different from each other and the ways they are alike. This is very amusing. Children are very observant.

In LA we are working on rhyming, the letter “p” and the vowel “o”, and printing our name and Math brings us to the different ways we can sort objects and the number 1.

Please remember that starting in October the kindergarten days will be on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.

It’s a good start to the year. The Grade 1,2,3’s are studying numbers, and learning about greater than and less than and skip counting. The Grade 2’s are using 10’s and 1’s to make numbers. In L.A. the Grade 1’s and 2’s have started home reading and Bubble Gum words for those who didn’t complete their words last year. The 1’s and 2’s have started their spelling and the 3’s are with Mrs. Basnett for all their L.A. work. The 1’s and 2’s are also doing a daily journal in L.A. Our class has started studying Peru in Social Studies and next week will be trying out a food out from Peru that is like a pancake. In Science we are studying animal life cycles. In music the children are enjoying singing and learning some basic music notation.

The Grade 4/5/6 class is off to a fantastic start this school year. We're working hard in Language Arts on our Tuck Everlasting novel and I've

enjoyed the students re-enactment of our chapters to show their understanding of the text. During Social Studies the students have had an excellent time learning about the regions of Canada and we are building circuits in our Electricity Unit in Science class. Reminder: 5/6 have spelling test weekly this year and the new list is handed out after our spelling test on Friday.

To start off the year, PE 10-20 conquered a gruelling fitness unit, and did an amazing job, de-

spite many sore muscles.

Math 6/7 began the year reviewing place value, divisibility, and developing numeracy skills

with Exploding Dots! (gdaymath.com) It's been a great start so far.

Bullying, Cyberbullying, Sexting and the Responsible Use of Social Media

As an educational organization, we have the great opportunity to educate students while at the same time, maximizing their

safety and well-being.

As we are all aware, the amount of time youth spend online continues to increase as well as the various social media platforms

available to them. Although technology presents many benefits, it also poses many risks. In this regard, I am pleased to share that

Peace River School Division has invited Carol Todd to provide school-based and community presentations regarding bullying, cyber

bullying, online safety, social media and sexting in several of our school communities. The presentations are open to students from

grades 8-12 and parents/guardians are welcome to attend both the school and community presentations.

As these presentations are of a sensitive nature, and to ensure our families are aware, we require that consent forms be signed by parents/guardians and sent back to the school if you would like your child to participate. If you have not already received a letter and consent form from your school, please watch for it as it will come home with your child(ren) in the very near future. Carol Todd lost her 15 year old daughter Amanda in 2012 when she took her own life in response to cyber-bullying and harassment. Car-ol is a parent, an educator and since her daughters passing, she serves to create greater awareness and understanding surrounding bullying, mental health and cyber safety. She founded the Amanda Todd Legacy Foundation in 2012 and since then has provided presen-tations for various schools and organizations in Canada, the United States and Europe. Carol is currently working in the Learning Services Department for Coquitlam School District No. 43. Scholastic Book Orders On-line More information on how to order Scholastic book orders on-line,.

First, you go to scholastic.ca. Once there, click the blue words Reading Club in the top left

corner, and on this page are all the different reading clubs listed in light blue. Pick the club

you want to look at and select your item/s; make a note of its order number and title to bring

back to Ms. Smith. Then, go back to the page where the list of all the reading clubs were,

and above that in red you will see the words Parent Pay; you go there and it will ask you all

your payment information, and you will give them the province and town we are in, and you will

have a drop down menu where you can pick your teacher’s name, so our class will get the

credit. Then, you will be given a code saying you’ve paid. You write that down on the same

sheet you jotted down the books you wanted, and bring that to me. I will then go on-line to

finalize the order! I hope that you can take advantage of this paper-less way of ordering

and still enjoy all the benefits of scholastic reading.

What’s New in Mr. Connell’s Room Junior High Social Studies

Junior High students are exploring the origins, histories and movement of peoples who forged the founda-

tions of Canadian Confederation. We will also examine how the political, demographic, economic and social

changes that have occurred since Confederation have influenced ways in which contemporary Canada has

evolved.

Social Studies-30

We spent much of September focusing on the idea of individual and collective identities, and how these

identities contribute to a person’s personal ideology. We have also discussed major individualist and collec-

tivist principles and values, and how these play into many personal, collective, and national ideologies. In

October, we will turn our attention to the origin and growth of modern Liberalism, as well as some Twenti-

eth-Century rejections of this ideological framework.

CTS Robotics

Our Senior High Robotics classes are off to a great start. Students have built basic “Rover” robots, and are

now busy programming them to accomplish various challenges, such as obstacle courses, using all of the

sensors at their disposal. Everyone is excited about just how sophisticated these new robots are, and students

are eager to explore many other types of robots that can be built using these kits.

Grades 1/2/3 Physical Education

Grades 1/2/3Physical Education is off to a wonderful start! We spent the first two weeks of September

working on team-building challenges and good sportsmanship. We are now honing our soccer skills through

group challenges and indoor 5 on 5 soccer matches.

Mr. Willis’ Classes

Math 8

Students are wrapping up Unit 1, where we learned about squares, square roots,

and the Pythagorean Theorem.

Math 9

The class has reviewed squares and square roots as well as the Pythagorean The-

orem. We also learned how to find the surface area of prisms and other 3D objects.

Computers 4/5/6 and 7/8/9

This month, students will become proficient in Windows operations, and the use of

Microsoft Word. They will also learn how to use Google Drive and Google Docs.

Phys Ed 7/8/9

Our course begins with a unit on volleyball. Students will practice and be tested on

all the skills, and we will play a number of in-class games.

Construction 7/8/9

This semester, students will finish the model houses that were built last year. This

month they will be attaching interior walls, flooring, and building cabinets and furni-

ture.

Photography 4/5/6

This semester we are creating stop-motion animations using a variety of tech-

niques.

Health 7/8/9

This month students are researching and presenting information about various sys-

tems in the body.

Health 4/5/6

Students will be learning about healthy living, with a number of presentations by

Heather Butler.

Language Arts with Mrs. Basnett

This year the language arts instruction for the elementary students has been divided into 3 sections. I am

very lucky to be able to provide the instruction for the grade 3 and grade 4 students and look forward to

our year together. In addition to the language arts 3/4, I also have the pleasure of teaching our junior high

students in LA 7/8/9, as well as an enrichment period during success block on Monday mornings. We have

a great deal of exciting units to work through this year that will encompass all 6 sections of language arts,

with a special focus on improving literacy skills.

I have had the pleasure of teaching at Worsley Central School, off and on, since 2006. I have enjoyed help-

ing our student’s progress in their education, but also to see them grow and change through the years.

Thanks to this, the grade 3/4 class got to enjoy a book reading courtesy of the grade 10 and 11 students.

In 2011, the older students were in grade 4/5 and created a book titled, “The Best Part of Us” which was

inspired by the book, “The Best Part of Me”. The high school students read the poems written for their

book to the grade 3/4 class, who then happily wrote their own book page. Thank you for joining us grade

10 and 11!

Here is a sneak peak of what the 3/4s wrote!

LA 3/4

Our daily schedule includes reading, a variety of written bell work entries based on grammar, free writes,

quotes, video clips, and our reading books. On Mondays, the students will bring home a cool fridge facts

of their spelling words for the week (idea being that you place it on your fridge for reminders to spell),

with Friday being our testing day. This month we are focusing on highly misspelled words and will move

into Words Their Way.

We are currently listening to the story, “Ella Enchanted” as we move into our fractured fairy-tale unit.

This unit will include a variety of writing styles and culminate in the creation of our own book!

LA 7/8

Our daily schedule includes reading, a variety of written weekly wisdom entries based on grammar, vo-

cabulary, quotes, poetry, and our reading books. Spelling instruction and weekly tests will begin next

week. Currently, we are working on a short story unit which will feature a variety of genres focusing on

the theme of choices. The unit will culminate with the students revising and re-submitting the short sto-

ry they wrote in September, using their new knowledge and skills.

I can’t believe the end of September is fast approaching and we are already a month into school! I am so happy to be back at Worsley Central School for the 2017/2018 school year. This year I will be teaching High School Sciences (Science 10, Biology 20, Biology 30), as well as serving as the Inclusive Education Coach for K-12. If you have any questions in this regard, please contact me at the school.

In Science 10 students started with the Chemistry unit. We have been talking about matter, elements, and compounds. Recently, students have learned how to name Ionic and Molecular compounds and are working on writing and balancing chemical equations.

In Biology 20 we have just recently finished our first unit on Energy and Matter Flow in Ecosystems. Stu-dents learned about the different components of our ecosystems and talked about energy flow using food webs. Studying the hydrological, carbon, and nitrogen cycles allowed students to gain an in-depth under-standing of the world in which we live. Next we are moving onto the second unit where we will look at popu-lation changes in our ecosystems.
