Overview and Checklist

This manual provides information, diagrams, instructions and recommendations related to preparing a building

site for installation of an ORTAL fireplace and vent.

ORTAL fireplaces must be installed in accordance with the ORTAL Installation and Operation Manuals and

applicable codes. An authorized dealer will install the direct vent pipe, make gas and power connections, and

provide fire stopping or thimble where direct vent pipe penetrates the wall or ceiling of the chase.

Installation must be performed by an ORTAL Authorized Installer. Installation by any other party invalidates the warranty.

Keep the following tips in mind as you plan the project:

• Do not allow delivery of the ORTAL fireplace to your jobsite until building is enclosed and ready for

installation.

• Protect the fireplace against damage throughout construction.

• Notify authorities having jurisdiction to inspect work before the chase is enclosed (if required).

Project Planning Checklist

Review the following requirements and tips carefully as you plan the project.

• Fireplace Model and Size: Ensure that the fireplace delivered matches the model and size in the order.

• Gas Type: Check whether you will be working with propane or with natural gas.

• Optional Features: Clarify whether the project will include features such as

• Double Glass fan assisted (upgrade from screen barrier)

• Power Vent System

• Wall Control Switch

• Power Heat Release System

• Fireplace Location and Venting: Make sure that adequate space is provided to vent the fireplace from

its desired location to the termination outside of the structure. For details, refer to Airflow: Description

and Guidelines on page 9.

• Access Panel for Control Valve: See Gas Valve Access Panel on page 10.

• Gas Supply Line: Must run to fireplace valve location and include shutoff to allow for flex line to be

attached to valve. The line must have a manual shutoff in the same room as the fireplace (within 4’ of

the fireplace, or per local code).

• Power Location: Provide a single gang 120v 15 amp outlet in the same area as the valve behind the

access panel. The unit requires a 6v transformer supplied with the fireplace to run without batteries.

• Heat Release – Air Return to Room: Make sure the size of the heat release is verified and located. For

details, refer to Sizing Guidelines for Air Intake and Heat Release on page 9.


• Air Intake (required for double glass models): Make sure the size of the air intake is verified and

located. For details, refer to Sizing Guidelines for Air Intake and Heat Release on page 9.

• Platform Height: This determines the height of the viewable glass opening. For specific unit

dimensions, see the CAD drawings on the ORTAL website.

• Type X Sheetrock in Chase Area: All combustible framing in the chase area must be completely

covered with 5/8” Type X drywall or its equivalent.

All weight must be supported by the framing and transferred to the fireplace. No building material should be

attached to the fireplace, with the exception of the Type X drywall (or its equivalent) in a flush install. It may

be secured to the unit with 1" self‐tapping screws 2 ½” up from the drywall lip spaced 16'' on center.

• Non‐combustible Areas: Maintain a 2” clearance on sides and back of the firebox to the Type X drywall

(or its equivalent).

• Final Wall Finish: Wall finish materials should be reviewed with your dealer to ensure that clearances

and materials conform to ORTAL clearance requirements. For more information, refer to Finishing

Details on page 18.


Firebox Clearances

This Builder’s Manual is based on installation of front‐facing ORTAL fireplaces. To install other ORTAL fireplace

styles, modify the instructions per ORTAL Framing Dimensions.

Maintain clearances as shown in the figures below. Clearances are to non‐combustible materials, or 5/8” Type X

fire rated drywall or its equivalent.

General Guidelines

Before you begin, read the following guidelines about airflow and the gas valve.

Airflow: Description and Guidelines

An ORTAL fireplace requires two airflow paths, for:

• Exhaust and combination air

• Cool wall air

The exhaust and combination air path involves the direct vent exhaust system, which consists of the air inside

the firebox and the direct vent pipe. A direct vent pipe has an inner and outer channel. Hot exhaust gases (mostly

carbon dioxide and water vapor) escape through the inner channel. Fresh outdoor air (providing oxygen for the

fire) is drawn in through the outer channel, where it captures most of the heat escaping through the inner

channel.

Cool wall air flow refers to the heat release system and air intake. The chase enclosing an ORTAL fireplace must

have a heat release above the fireplace. This allows for the heat buildup within the fireplace chase to be released

back into the living space, which helps keep the fireplace wall cool. Fireplaces with the double glass feature must

have an air intake. Room air is drawn between the glass, into the chase and then is returned to the room through

the heat release. These airflows, along with radiant heat from the front of the fireplace, maximize the heating

performance of an ORTAL fireplace and contribute to its energy efficiency.

Cool Wall Airflow Intake

• ORTAL fireplaces with double glass require an intake located below elevation of the fireplace.

• The air intake can be a grille or louver, or an opening on the underside of the chase.

• For screen units, the screen serves as the air intake.

Heat Release

A heat release mechanism is required for all built‐in models.

• The heat release must be interior.

• It should be located a maximum of 6 inches from the top of the fireplace chase.

• It can be a grille or louver, or a gap between the top of the chase wall and the ceiling.

Sizing Guidelines for Air Intake and Heat Release

The minimum free area (net area after grillwork or screens are subtracted) should be:

• Ortal Models 40 to 130: 124 sq.inches or more

• Ortal Models 150 to 200: 200 sq.inches or more

• Ortal Model 250: 250 sq.inches or more

• Other Models: Check with ORTAL


Gas Valve Access Panel

A gas valve should be installed below elevation of the firebox. An access panel is recommended for easy servicing

of the gas valve. The panel should be a minimum size of 10” x 10”. If a larger panel is required to conveniently

reach the valve, increase these dimensions.

NOTE: .For power vents, a 12” x 12” panel is recommended.

An appropriately sized air intake can be used as an access panel. Refer to Sizing Guidelines for Air Intake and Heat

Release on page 9.


Heat Release and Air Intake Construction

The following sections present guidelines and diagrams related to building the heat release and air intake:

Safety Precautions

Always adhere to the following guidelines to ensure safety and to protect equipment:

• Know the building code and consult with authorities having jurisdiction before proceeding. This

Builder’s Manual contains minimum requirements. You may need to modify details provided to satisfy

project requirements.

• External surfaces of ORTAL fireplaces and areas exposed to radiant heat from fire will get hot. Observe

required clearances between the fireplace and combustible materials.

• Artwork and devices such as TVs, audio speakers and light fixtures to be mounted on the chase or

recessed into a wall of the chase must have a double wall of 5/8” Type X fire rated gypsum board (or its

equivalent) with a 7/8” high hat channel installed vertically in between to prevent direct heat impact.

• Protect the fireplace against damage throughout the construction period.

Working with Reveal or Gap Openings

The diagram below shows the heat release as reveal, and the air intake as reveal/toe‐kick. For details about the

heat release and air intake, refer to Airflow: Description and Guidelines on page 9.

An air intake is required for all double glass models.

NOTE: An access panel (minimum size 10” x 10”) is recommended for all installations. The air intake can

function as an access panel.

Check with your louver manufacturer regarding the percentage of free air space provided by their products in

order to verify that you will be providing the minimum free air space required.

Clearance to Ceiling


Sprinkler Clearance to Heat Release

In a situation where a sprinkler head is in close proximity to the heat release, the detail shown in the diagram

below must be followed. The distance between the sprinkler head to the heat release opening cannot be less

than 60 inches (linear length) from every point of the heat release opening.

Inside Corner Clearances

The diagram below shows inside corner options. No combustible material should be placed within the

dimensions shown.

Maximum thickness of the mantel legs (indicated by the arrow in the upper diagram) is 2 inches. You must

provide a 1” clearance around the opening of the fireplace for every additional inch of thickness to the mantel

legs.

Ledge/Shelf Detail

This section provides information about incorporating a ledge/shelf detail in the fireplace design. This

information applies to all ORTAL built‐in models (Front, Corner, Three‐Sided, Tunnel and Space Creator).

Ledge/Shelf construction MUST be non‐combustible.

The following table lists the maximum surface area of the ledge, according to fireplace model. (A and B refer to

the distances depicted in the diagram below.)

This diagram shows that a minimum 12” height must be provided from the top of the fireplace opening to the

bottom of the ledge. Be sure to keep the top of the firebox clear of obstruction and to maintain all clearances.

A heat release on top of the ledge is needed only if the ledge surface area exceeds what is shown in the above

table ‐ 25% in the ledge and 75% in the chase.

Two layers of Type X (or its equivalent) below the ledge will help keep the surface temperature down.


Securing the Unit

All built‐in fireplaces come with legs and with seismic brackets at the top of the firebox. These brackets are an

additional way to secure the firebox in the chase while still maintaining the air clearances outlined in this manual.

You may use either the seismic brackets or heavy duty steel brackets to mount the firebox to the back chase wall,

while still maintaining the required 2'' air clearance. If the seismic brackets do not extend all the way to the chase

wall, you may extend metal studs to connect to your seismic brackets. Use the leg shipping brackets to secure to

the floor.

Freestanding and wall‐mounted ORTAL fireplaces need to be secured to the wall or the floor. If the fireplace is

located against a wall, the wall must be made of non‐combustible material or covered with 5/8'' Type X gypsum

board or its equivalent.


Vent Pipe Clearances

This section provides guidelines and instructions for maintaining vent clearances.

Vertical Clearances:

according to fireplace model. This distance is depicted as A in the diagram of the vent clearance section.

Overview of the Construction Process

The process of building the chase can be divided into five main phases.

PHASE 1 STEPS:

• Frame the back and side walls.

• Build the platform (if relevant) to the desired height.

• Cover with 5/8" Type X gypsum board or its equivalent (unless the entire adjacent structure is non‐

combustible).

PHASE 2 STEPS:

• Install the fireplace and venting.

• Move the valve to the access panel location.

• Run gas and electric to the access panel location.

For details about Phase 2, refer to Installing the Fireplace and Venting on page 36.

PHASE 3 STEPS:

• Build the front walls and stand them into place.

• Secure the walls to the structure.

For details about Phase 3, refer to Building the Front Walls on page 36.

PHASE 4 (relevant for wood framing only):

• Build and install the infill panel.

For details about Phase 4, refer to Building the Infill Panel on page 39.

PHASE 5 STEPS:

• Apply finishes and install accessories.

• Turn the project over to the customer.

Building Back and Side Walls

The sections below provide details about framing the back and side walls. If a platform for the fireplace is

necessary, it should be built during this stage.

Walls, Ceiling and Floor

When planning the project, take into consideration whether framing will be non‐combustible or combustible.

Non‐combustible Framing

The wall behind an ORTAL fireplace (either at the back or side of the fireplace) and the ceiling above the unit

must be non‐combustible construction such as concrete, brick, concrete masonry units, or plaster on metal

framing and lath. Penetrations in the wall or ceiling, such as electrical boxes, must be removed and patched to

assure integrity of the non‐combustible enclosure.

Combustible Framing

The first 18'' (minimum) of framing MUST be non‐combustible (steel studs). Existing walls or ceilings built of

combustible materials may be used if the wall or ceiling is covered with 5/8” thick Type X gypsum board or its

equivalent.

An exception to this rule is when the walls of the chase do not extend all the way to the ceiling and allow a “gap”

for heat release. In this scenario, ½” thick Type X gypsum board (or its equivalent) may be used to match the

thickness of gypsum board used on the ceiling outside the chase.


Floor

An ORTAL fireplace can be set on wood, concrete, metal and other typical solid floor types. ORTAL fireplaces

come with legs that position the unit above the floor or platform on which they are installed. (See shop drawings

for height.) To raise an ORTAL fireplace, build a stable platform to which the unit can be secured.

This is also the time to make sure power and gas lines are in place. Provide a grounded 120V, 15 Amp single gang

box inside the chase for use by the ORTAL installer.

Drywall Chase Interior

Wood framing inside the chase must be covered with Type X gypsum board or its equivalent.

In remodeling projects, apply a layer of Type X gypsum board (or its equivalent) over existing material, unless it is

certain that the existing surfaces are 5/8" Type X gypsum board or another acceptable non‐combustible material.


Installing the Fireplace and Venting

ORTAL fireplaces must be installed in accordance with the ORTAL Installation and Operation manuals and

applicable codes. Install the direct vent pipe, make gas and power connections, and provide fire stopping or

thimble where the direct vent pipe penetrates the wall or ceiling of the chase.

Building the Front Walls

In most projects, you will probably want to postpone installation of the front wall of the chase. This will allow

access for installing drywall inside the chase, positioning the ORTAL fireplace and direct vent pipe, and making

necessary connections.

Install framing in accordance with building codes and project specifications. All studs are placed 16 inches on

center, or per local code.

Plan your work carefully, paying particular attention to:

• Required clearances

• Blocking for securing the fireplace, direct vent pipes, mantles, drywall, etc.

• Access panel for the gas valve (Gas Valve Access Panel on page 10)

• Heat release and air intake (Heat Release and Air Intake Construction on page 11)

• Direct vent, direct vent strapping, and penetrations through walls and ceiling

• Recesses for TV, audio speakers, light fixtures, art work, and other items built into chase (if required)

Take a moment for a final visual inspection of the chase interior. Remove any construction debris that may be

inside the chase.

Install conduit, wiring, power outlets, and electrical boxes between framing members with 5/8 Type X or its

equivalent on both sides.

Building and structural loads must not bear on the ORTAL fireplace.


Working with Drywall

Cover the metal framing with 5/8"‐thick Type X gypsum board (or its equivalent) to exterior face of the chase.

Exceed these requirements where fire‐resistance‐rated construction or other methods are required.

Type X gypsum board or its equivalent must comply with ASTM C1396 ‐ Specification for Gypsum Board. Provide

Level 1 or better finish, in accordance with GA‐214 ‐ Recommended Levels of Gypsum Board Finish.

Do not locate exposed gypsum board joints directly above the fireplace.

If corner beads and other drywall trim are required, use metal products where non‐combustible materials are

required. For maximum Cool Wall effect, cover both the interior and exterior of steel studs.


Building the Infill Panel

An infill panel is required only when the design involves wood framing. Follow these steps to complete the infill

panel:

STEP 1: Build the Infill Panel

Build the infill panel flat on the floor. The face that will be inside the chase should be facing up it as it lies on the

floor.

The infill panel and fireplace should NOT be load bearing.

Pay particular attention to the details and clearances required for any recesses for TV or art. Provide blocking for

anchorage of TV or heavy artwork, and brace the recess to prevent sagging. For more information, refer to TV

Detail on page 26.

STEP 2: Drywall the Inside of the Infill Panel

Apply 5/8"‐thick Type X gypsum board or its equivalent to the “inside” surface of the infill panel. This surface is

the top of the panel as it lies on the floor.


STEP 3: Install the Infill Panel

Take a moment for a final visual inspection of the chase interior. Remove any construction debris that may be

inside the chase.

Lift or tilt the infill panel into position. Secure it to the framing of the chase.


Completing Construction

The final stages of construction involve applying finishing and turning the product over to the customer.

Adding Finishes and Accessories

Now is the time to apply decorative finishes to the exterior of the fireplace chase. For more information about

the different finishes, refer to Finishing Details on page 18.

Any required accessories, such as mantels, TV mounts, and other features should also be installed at this time.)

Observe clearance requirements for combustible materials.

Delivering the Product to the Customer

Your ORTAL dealer will install interior design media, remove protective materials from and clean exposed

surfaces of the fireplace, and perform the start‐up inspection and initial burning.

The dealer will provide the following materials:

• Ortal Installation and Operation Manual

• Ortal Fireplace Owner’s Manual

• Executed warranty

• Operation control(s)

Demonstrate operation of the ORTAL fireplace to the customer.

Venting Diagram: Typical Horizontal

Use the diagram and tables below to calculate distances for venting runs. You can use up to two 90‐degree

elbows OR four 45‐degree elbows.

If needed for clearance, 2*45˚ may be used directly on the unit with up to a 12'' section between them. The V

minimum starts above them. They do not count in elbow totals.

V minimum =

• 6 feet for Series 200 and 250

• 3 feet for Series 40‐170

For venting runs that exceed these maximums, consider ORTAL’S Power Vent system. Contact your ORTAL dealer
