. The Summer is over and some friends collectors have notified this periodical publication on “peculiar” rocks and fossils they found in various places during their summer vacation. With great joy and in cooperation with these friends we proceeded to a reconnaissance of the material they collected and we present it in this issue what they have found and sent to us along with an excellent article on Geowonders in Pindos Mountain and Development in Grevena area based mainly on Geotourism. The material of the collectors comes from Katara area in Trikala, Kalamos area in NE Attiki Co. , Volos area in Magnesia Co. and Pendeli Mt. in Attiki Co. The findings of friends-collectors may not be “diamonds” , but we consider them to be “diamonds” in sense that their findings are discoveries by people who retain a remarkable observation in the field and are characterized by a passion in this hobby. Their description , even in simple form, may lead the road to other collectors and Nature passionate to visit the areas and –who knows- locate new findings. From January 1986 , when this consistent effort on ORYKTOLOGIKA NEA-NEWS ON MINERALS and GeMin Expo started , we supported and we still support the belief that every County in Hellas either in Mainland or the Hellenic Islands in Aegean , Ionian and Libyan Sea , have a mineral wealth – in a wider meaning of this term. This Mineral Wealth can be developed and we refer to “the other way” of the development of mineral wealth : To offer knowledge . The readers will have the chance again to realize that this type of sustainable development of the Mineral Wealth in this Country can contribute “a lot” in economy without environmental problems.

Fossils in Trikala County , Thessalia , Central Hellas

During the opening of a path in a forest area in Pindos Mt. in the area centered in Katara of Trikala close to Malakasi village , an interesting fossil deposit was discovered. The fossil deposit is in the locality “Kampos tou Despoti” or in excact English translation “Plain of the Bishop”. Marine fossils in an altitude of 1800 meters revealed a sea which was so well hidden up there. A sign saying “Attention – Bears” reminded to us that we were in the Mountain and we had to respect the Laws of Mountain. We collected some fossils and we left living a great experience on “Fossil Safari” in Pindos Mountain. Some of the collected fossils are seen in the photographs in next page.Gastropods and various mollusks (shellfish) were there.

-NEWS ON MINERALS - 12 - Vol 27 - 161 - 2012 DEVELOPMENT IN GREVENA

[email protected] Dr Annie Rassios

Nowhere in Greece does the economic crisis affect us more than here in Grevena and the mountainous regions of the Pindos. We suffer the highest unemployment in the country; the “way of life” that sustained generations before us is now marginalized within the Europe of today. We know we live in “o omorpho topo”. Can the beautiful Grevena and Pindos develop as an economically attractive place to live and raise our families? Development costs money – or does it? Greece, including Grevena, possesses mineral resources. Development of these is possible, but profits can only be considered on a long-term, multi decade, scale. The cost of opening a mine or quarry is enormous. To re-open the old Skoumtsa-Xerolivado mine would take an investment on the order of a half billion euros as a start, with no guarantee that the metals market would support this venture profitably now or in the future. There are indeed companies willing to invest in opening or reopening mines in Greece including here locally: these are bogged down in insurmountable bureaucracy, lack of technologic infrastructure, and in some places, as for the example of gold in Chalkidiki, important choices must be made between the environment and the mine. Would you sell Valia Kalda to open a quarry for industrial minerals? Green energy generation in the Pindos region is slapdash and reduces the potential for touristic development. The small electric dam at the Tsouriakas waterfall was unstoppable despite local opposition. The economic development granted by the small amount of electrical generation apparently was considered superior to development of Tsouriakas as an international touristic destination. As residents of Grevena, are we benefitting from this development? I don’t know how much the dam and electrical facilities are costing, but I do know that touristic development would cost nearly nothing aside from marketing. The last time I visited a small electric dam site on Loumnitsa River on the border of Valia Kalda, it was filled with rocks washed down the stream and fallen from rockslides that closed its access roads. More than its investment money wasted, the development of the Loumnitsa as a world-class trout fishing stream is now out of the question. Wind farms are a great investment in development – but are they great for us in the Pindos? Go to Austria: every farmer’s field seems covered by wind machines. But the mountains are kept clear because otherwise tourists would stop spending money there. It seems as if a wind farm above Avdella and Perivoli might help these villages have cheaper electricity – or is this electricity to be added to the national grid, thus causing unsightly pylons to be erected cutting across some of the most beautiful terrain in Greece, and reducing the potential development of the region as a major international touristic destination? Would you trade the few remaining Golden Eagles of the Pindos for a wind farm to provide air conditioning to one or two buildings in Athens? We need development. We need development that helps us directly in the Pindos. We need it now. And frankly, it can’t cost much money because “there ain’t spit” available. For the last several years, I have been working on development of Geotourism in the Pindos. Geotourism is based, simply, on visiting absolutely beautiful mountains and countryside, much alike to National Park tourism in the USA and Europe. We can produce books scientists will love, and we can produce books and pamphlets that the general tourist will appreciate. We are doing both, with as much success as constant battles with bureaucracy allow. Geo- and mountain tourism are as advanced in Greece as tourism at the Grand Canyon was about a hundred years ago. In those days, this meant finding a guide, finding rough roads and trails, hoping to find a refuge to sleep at. Today, it goes without saying that tourism at the Grand Canyon is a multi-billion dollar business. Most National Parks in the USA require the tourist to make a reservation a year in advance of their visit. Oh, don’t we wish we had a touristic business like that here in the Pindos? In 2009, the year before the Great Greek Economic Catastrophe, there were about 300,000 Greek tourists actually touring Greece: ~3000, just 1%, visited Grevena. With the present economy, this number is going to be lower and lower with each new budgeting measure passed by the government. Like all businesses in our area, local tour companies are down ~60%, and hostels, hotels, and tavernas even more. Greek tourists simply do not have money to spend at present visiting our mountains: we cannot fill our hotels and restaurants with Greek tourists. Even now during the global recession, 14.5 million foreign tourists came to Greece last year, and more are predicted for this year. Half a million international tourists come to visit nearby Meteora yearly. How do we bring some of these folk our way? Which brings me back to the books we’re writing. These are public relations books – they are meant to bring the attention both of international scientific and general tourism. Scientific tourism is great – a week-long field tour among university professors and academics brings in about 50,000 euros to the local economy. This is good, but it’s only possible once or twice a year. The international academic community can only field a certain number of scientists interested in the regional geology. And it has to be organized by specialists, fellow scientists with the academic credentials to legitimize the field trip. International tourist groups are far more realistic and profitable. Today, specialized tours sponsored by college and university alumnae groups cross all of Europe with excursions such as: “Italy’s Magnificent Lake Country,” “Grand Danube Passage,” “The Villages and Vineyards of France,” “Greek Islands”… They’re already in Greece. How do we get them HERE? Can the GeoWonders of the Pindos compete? Within the text of this small article I’ve used the description “world class” several times. I’ve been to every National Park in the western USA. I’ve been to Switzerland, to Scotland, to France, to the Danube. I’ve even been to the Greek islands. But I chose to live in Grevena. We have potential world-class touristic destinations throughout the Pindos, in particular, “Geowonder” attractions based on the spectacular natural landscapes. These Geowonders host the added values of our traditional Pindos way of life, with churches and monasteries that date from Byzantium.

Page 13: ORYKTOLOGIKA NEA-NEWS ON MINERALS: Your best Mineral,Gemstone and Fossil connection in Greece. -The oldest and most popular Greek-English Mineralogical Magazine for Collectors in Europe

-NEWS ON MINERALS - 13 - Vol 27 - 161 - 2012 We host one of the world’s most rare ecosystems; ours is a wilderness area alive and well within Europe. Did you know the oldest rocks in Greece can be visited in Grevena? Did you know that we can show you the birthplace of the European continent? Bears! Wolves! Mushrooms! We got it! We are an international destination, undiscovered as yet by tourists. We have the infrastructure – we have the roads, hotels and hostels, tavernas, and tour companies. We have the “product” we want to sell; the magnificent Pindos itself. In our case, what’s lacking is marketing. To market, you must be able to show the product to potential buyers. And you must show it to the right market of potential buyers. In the case of international tourism, this means books, booklets, websites in English, French, German and Chinese. This means that people like me and a few others send information to over a thousand alumnae groups and travel clubs over the globe. It costs us time, not much money. We’re trying. We’ve surveyed more than 60 “Geowonders of the Pindos” localities, and are ready to place them in a low-cost book to aid touristic marketing. But again, up comes the labyrinth of Greek bureaucracy and our attempts to bring low-cost development into the area has bogged down. Here are the numbers I want to communicate: Were six alumnae groups per year to take part in a “Geowonders of the Pindos” tour, with a lot of time spent in the Grevena area, the contribution to the local economy would be about half a million euros per year. Maybe putting in a mine could bring more money in the long long term, but for now, Geotouristic development – the “sale” of “o ormorpho topo” on an international scale – can be the cheapest, easiest path to economic recovery in the Pindos area.

Portitsa (photo by Orliakas co-author Dina Ghikas) is the optimum photo that illustrates what is a "Geowonder"

A Geowonder is a place where the earth has created an inspirational landform. It is a view of mountains and valleys, plains, streams and hills of exceptional beauty. It is a place where natural vegetation is an adornment, and the sky itself the gallery of a living landscape.

(Map showing part of Kalamos coast where marl with opal specimens were collected .

Map Courtesy : http://www.google.com/intl/el/earth/index.html )

Intercalations of opal seams inside Neogene marl from Kalamos coast , Attiki County ,Hellas. We were given by Mr. Konstantinos Vlahoyannis ([email protected] ) an aesthetic specimen from the coast of Kalamos , Attiki County , Hellas. (For location see map above). At a first glance , it gives the impression of a typical marl sedimentary rock with intercalated coal seams ,as it is known that Neogene Sedimentary rocks in quite a few areas of Attiki County , namely Rafina, Mesogaia Basin, Kalogreza , Amarousion , Kalamos , Oropos and elsewhere host lignite deposits. It is widely known that some sedimentary rocks may contain chemical elements and have such physical properties so that under certain conditions some minerals may crystallise. For example, pyrite and marcasite form crystals in mud that is rich in sulfur (S), iron (Fe) and organic matter. Opal , hydrated silica , [ SiO2·nH2O ] forms mainly in sedimentary rocks where the groundwater is rich in silica as in Cooper Pedy and Mintabie areas in South Australia. A more careful look of the Kalamos coast specimen reveal that there are intercalations of opal seams within marl layers. The material could be either silicified marl or opal. The hardness and the conchoidal fracture tends for opal. This opal layer is hard (cannot be scratched either by knife or even by Quartz (!!) ) and transition from white to black and reverse is gradual in same layer (zone). Those portions of opal seams without fractures , properly cut , can give beautiful cabochons. (see photographs in next pages).

Marl or marlstone is a calcium carbonate or lime-rich mud or mudstone which contains variable amounts of clays and silt. The dominant carbonate mineral in most marls is calcite, but other carbonate minerals such as aragonite, dolomite, and siderite may be present. Marl was originally an old term loosely applied to a variety of materials, most of which occur as loose, earthy deposits consisting chiefly of an intimate mixture of clay and calcium carbonate, formed under freshwater conditions; specifically an earthy substance containing 35-65% clay and 65-35% carbonate. In Kalamos case it will be good to locate the Si source which gave rise to opal seams as the opal is a result of silicon dioxide and water permeating through the ground. .
