TrueAuto

TrueAuto is SMSC's automotive qualityprocess. It has proven its capability todeliver leading edge quality andservices to fulfill the needs of even themost demanding automotive custom-ers. It is SMSC's proven total approachto true automotive-grade quality.SMSC's TrueAuto robustness begins with the design forreliability techniques within the silicon IC itself. Automo-tive-grade excellence and testability are designed into theIC. The IC is fully characterized over many operatingparameters to prove the quality of the design undervarious conditions. It meets or exceeds automotive reli-ability standards (like AEC-Q100) and customer specificrequirements. In addition, extensive technologies and processes, suchas enhanced monitors are used in fabrication of TrueAutoproducts in order to continuously drive improvements inaccordance with SMSC's zero Defects per Million (DPM)goals.

Description

The OS85650 and OS85652 are Input/Output Compan-ion ICs that provide MediaLB port expansion. They allowa wide variety of I/O types to be conveniently interfaced toa MOST network. All MOST data types are supported(control, asynchronous, synchronous and isochronous). Apowerful routing engine allows simultaneous routing ofdata between the MediaLB (3-Pin and/or 6-Pin) and thevarious I/O ports available on the chip including:

HBI (16-bit parallel port)Serial Audio I/O (I2S and sequential (TDM) modes)Serial and parallel TSIsSPII2C

The OS85650 includes a DTCP encryption/decryptionengine that can provide secure data transfer betweensources and sinks located across the network. The DTCPco-processor autonomously encrypts and decrypts up toeight synchronous and/or isochronous data channelsrouted through the device. It includes full AKE function-ality, and supports both M6 and AES-128 ciphersaccording to ‘DTCP for MOST’ and ‘DTCP-IP’. This copyprotection is required for securing the audio and videocontent of applications such as DVD, Blu-ray Disc™ andHD broadcast.

The high-performance routing engine operates at aninternal speed of up to 1.5 Gbits/sec. It is able to simul-taneously route a variety of data types between applica-tions hardware located on the PCB or between thoseapplications and the MOST network. For example, acombination of Ethernet data packets, MPEG transportstream packets, and multiple audio channels required for7.1 surround sound applications can be routed betweenports and encrypted/decrypted as necessary.

The I/O Companion can interface with any of SMSC'sIntelligent Network Interface Controller (INIC) devices viathe MediaLB 3-Pin interface. The additional MediaLB 6-Pin interface enables high-speed communication to theINIC150 which is required for higher bandwidth applica-tions. Together with the 16-bit parallel HBI, it enables ahigh-speed connection between the INIC150 andmultiple EHCs with over 300 Mbits/sec. It is also possibleto use the OS8565x as a bridge between MediaLB 6-Pinand MediaLB 3-Pin.

Case Studies

Audio/Video Source (DVD/Blu-ray, DTV)

Typically, the latest DVD/Blu-ray and DTV ICs are highly-integrated SoCs used to stream audio and video datacombined either in one MPEG2/4 stream or as separatedsynchronous audio (stereo or multi-channel) and isochro-nous MPEG video streams. Both a compressed MPEGstream and an uncompressed audio I2S stream can beencrypted by the on-chip DTCP co-processor (OS85650)before being sent to the MOST network.

Synchronous audio is transferred via the I2S interface, while the MPEG signals are transferred using the HBI(commonly used for DVD) or the TSI (standard for mostDTV controllers). Additional information such as channellists or teletext are transferred using the SPI interface. Allof these different data types are distributed via MediaLBto the INIC.

Audio Amplifier

Today's audio amplifiers receive multiple audio streams(mono, stereo or multi-channel 5.1/7.1) from a variety ofdevices and applications, including DVD/Blu-ray or DTVplayers, navigations systems, phones, driver assistantmessages and microphones for noise cancellation. All ofthese audio streams are mixed within an audio DSPconnected via I2S lines to the OS8565x. At the same time, the OS85650 is also capable of decrypting high-qualityaudio streams using the internal DTCP co-processor.

Video Display

An MPEG2/4 stream received over the network can bedecrypted by the OS85650's internal DTCP co-processor.It is then transferred as one stream containing both audioand video over the TSI port to an MPEG decoder (e.g., inthe RSE module) where the signal is separated into itsaudio and video constituents. The resulting digital audiosignal can then be directed to headphones or transmittedback to the network (via I2S) to be processed by otheraudio devices, such as an audio amplifier. The multi-channel audio can be encrypted by the internal DTCP co-processor before being back-streamed to the MOSTnetwork.

MOST packet data, such as a navigation map or HMImenus can be transmitted using the HBI interface. Allsignals between the OS85650 and the INIC areexchanged via the MediaLB interface.

Infotainment Head Unit with DVD Player and Video Display

A more complex scenario includes a highly-integratedinfotainment head unit with a variety of functions such asdisplay, HMI, navigation, DVD player and MOST networkmanagement. Audio and video from the disk player maybe used both locally for display and playback, and alsorouted to the network. Similarly, audio and video data maybe received from the network for processing, mixing anddisplay. At the same time, packet data may be transferredbetween the network attached navigation unit and thedisplay processor in the head unit. The OS8565x cansimultaneously route all of the data types between appli-cations within the head unit as well as on the network, including network management and control. ForMOST150 applications, the OS8565x can bridgebetween MediaLB 3-Pin-enabled processors and theMediaLB 6-Pin port on the INIC.
