1．STUDY AT OIT

(1) Orientation

Orientation is held for your smooth start of the campus life. Soon after arrival, you will

be notified of the date of orientation. Your attendance is obligatory. Student buddies

will escort you to the campus.

(a) First place of visit

International Center (1st floor, “CHAST” building)

* “CHAST” was coined from “chat” and “rest”, in

the hope that people can enjoy chatting and

resting in here.

* This is the place to come if you have any

questions during your stay.

(b) What to bring

・Residence card, passport, and visa (if applicable)

・Payment for insurance (Personal Accident Insurance and Inbound Travel Insurance.

Cost about 2,000 yen)

・This guidebook and writing material

(c) You will receive:

・Student card (Auditors Identification Card)

・Account for Use of Network

・Emergency Notification Card

・Class Schedule, Event Schedule, Syllabus, Information on Club Activities

(d) Orientation

・Campus Tour (Library, Self-Study Room, etc.)

・Introduction to laboratories (with Professors and Students)

(2) Student Card (Auditors Identification Card)

Your Auditors Identification Card (hereinafter “Student Card”) is proof to show that

you are an OIT student. Carry it with you at all times.

6-digit of student ID, like “T1500X”, is printed on the Student Card. You are requested

to show it when;

Registering your attendance at class(by holding the card up over a registration

machine in the classroom)

Taking an exam

Entering the library

Issuing any university certificates

Buying food ticket at cafeterias (with a smart card function called Edy)

<Precautions for Use of Student Card>

Do not lend the card to other people. The card is an IC card with Edy. Do not damage it. If the card is lost, inform the International Center and

the Police about it, and proceed with reissuance (fee: 2,000 yen).

・Return the card before leaving Japan.

(3) Communication within OIT -”Portal Site System” -

In order to get important information such as your class, check OIT Portal System

every day. Your login account is written on your notice letter that you will receive

during the orientation.

It is possible to transfer messages in the Portal Site System to your private email

address.

＜Emergency contact＞

This system allows you only to browse information. Contact us if necessary in case

of emergency. During your stay in Japan, you should inform us of your private email

address, and your phone number if available, and whenever you change them.

(4) Course Registration

(a) Registration

To obtain credits for your classes, you need to complete course registration in

advance. Your advising professor will help you choose appropriate classes during the

orientation.

The registration must be completed by April 10.

(b) Credits

One class consists of 120 minutes (90 minutes of class work and 30 minutes of other

activities relating to the class such as self-study). There are 15 classes during the

semester. Depending on the style of class (lecture, lab-work, etc.), 15 to 45 hours is

needed for 1 credit. Inform your home university that it is standard in Japan that one

subject has 30 hours (2hr. x 15 weeks) in a semester.

(c) Evaluation

In each course, a professor in charge will evaluate you based on exam scores, reports,

etc. You will be given raw scores (full score: 100). In OIT, 60 or more is granted as

“Pass” and is accredited.

(d) Regular Exam

Regular term exams are held during a certain period in a semester (see our Academic

Calendar pp. 12). However, some courses have no exams but small tests instead

throughout the semester.

<Caution !>

・A timetable of regular term exams is posted both on the bulletin board and on our

website and Portal Site System.

If you do not know how to find your schedule, ask the International Center.

・You are requested to show your Student Card to take exams. In case you forget to

bring, a fee of 350 yen is charged for a tentative student identification card.

・Cheating during exams is severely punished.

(5) Coursework

(b) Classroom

・You can find your classroom in the timetable. Classrooms are classified based on

certain keys. For example; Room “531” means the 1st

room of 3rd

floor in building 5.

* Classroom changes will be informed on the bulletin board or the Portal Site System.

(c) Lecture Cancellation

・Lectures may be canceled due to inevitable reasons such as lecturer’s sickness or

due to bad weather.

・If lecture cancellation is known in advance, it will be informed it on the bulletin board

or the Portal Site System.

・If a lecturer has not come within 30 minutes from the beginning of the class, contact

the Registrar’s office.

(d) Makeup Class

・If your class is cancelled, you will have a makeup class.

・You will be informed about the date and hour of the makeup class on the bulletin

board or the portal system.

(e) Absence

・If you know in advance that you need to be absent from a class, verbally explain the

reason to your teacher in advance.

・If you have to be absent due to inevitable reasons such as sickness, contact your

teacher for advice soon after and receive instructions.

(f) Class Manners

・It is forbidden to enter or leave during a class.

・It is forbidden to chat in class.

・Shut off your cell phone or mobile device.

・No food or drink is allowed in the classroom.

(g) In Case of Typhoon

If your class is cancelled due to a typhoon, you will be informed on the Portal Site

System. International center will inform the Caretaker of the International House

about any cancellations. If you do not know whether you have class or not, ask the

Caretaker.

(2) Problems and concerns

If you encounter any problems during your stay in Japan, consult your International

Center staff first. We will do our best to support you and help solve the problem. We

may advise you to go to the counseling room (1st

floor of building 2) if you have a very

sensitive issue and require professional advice from a counselor. To use this service,

an appointment is necessary.

(3) Health Management

When you feel sick, go to the School Infirmary (1st floor of building 2). Nursing staff

will refer you to an appropriate hospital close to the campus judging from your

symptoms. A physician and psychotherapist are available at certain hours.

3．FACILITIES

(1) Library

You can freely gain access to the collection in our library. You can check out up to 5

books at a time for two weeks. The library also has a large number of Japanese

comics.

* When you enter the library and borrow books, you need to show your student card.

Computers are available for use at the computer stations on campus.

You can use it not only for your assignment but also for portal system or web surfing.

(3) Language Learning Center (LLC)

LLC is located in the same building as the International Center. In LLC, students

gather and enjoy communicating in English. It has a good selection of DVD movies,

games, magazines, and comic books, etc. in English.

(4) Cafeterias and Kiosk

(a) Cafeterias

At the cafeterias on campus, highly nutritious foods are available, and almost all

menus are less than 500 yen. They are prepared by qualified dieticians and chefs.

Additionally, a set meal is available for 250 yen including rice, miso soup, salad and

two side dishes between 8:30 and 9:30 in the morning.

4. CLUB ACTIVITIES

We have about 100 clubs for athletic and cultural activities.

“International Friendship Circle” organizes cross-cultural events with international

students, and “International Students Friendship Society” engages in activities

beneficial to the local community.

By joining a club, you may be able to make many friends beyond affiliation and age. If

you have an interest, ask the Student Affairs Division. “Club Guide 2015” also shows

you details.

5. EMERGENCY

It is very important for you to be safety conscious and be aware of safety procedures.

(1) In case of earthquake

・Turn off stove immediately if you are using it.

・Be calm, hide yourself in a safe place (e.g. under a desk), and guard your head with

your bag or anything available.

・As it may cause fire, cut the power supply and gas in your room before escaping.

・Follow faculty/staff instructions if present.

(2) In case of fire

・Alert people around you even if it is a small fire.

(3) Precautions for evacuation

・Use stairs instead of an elevator.

・In case of escaping from fire, cover your mouth and nose with a handkerchief and

keep your head low, in order not to breath in toxic smoke.

(4) Safety confirmation

In case of a big earthquake, it is difficult for us to go to the dormitory and confirm

your safety. Instead, we will refer to your contact information registered in OIT to get

in touch with you.

If you do not keep us updated on the information, it would be difficult for us to

confirm your safety. Whenever you change your cellphone number or email address,

be sure to inform the International Center.
