Winter Wonderland We will be having a holiday “Winter Wonderland” assembly on Thursday, December 18 th . There will be two separate assemblies. The first assembly will begin after morning recess at 11:00 a.m., for students in grades 4-8. Students in grades K-3 will perform after lunch beginning at 1:40p.m. All parents are invited to attend our special assembly! We look forward to seeing you! 2. Whitchurch-Stouffville Museum On Friday, November 21 st , all of the Grade 3 classes went to the Whitchurch Stouffville Museum to learn about the Wendat Nation and the early settlers. We learned about the Wendat people who were the first settlers of Stouffville. We made the 3 sisters soup. It represented the vegetables of the 3 sisters: squash, beans, and corn. We arranged the logs to make teepee campfires and log cabin fires. These are the ways the Wendat made their fires. During tribe meetings the Wendat used a talking stick. It encouraged them to listen to one another’s ideas. We visited a real log house. The log cabin was small, the boys slept upstairs and the girls slept downstairs with the parents. They made their own candles to light up the house. There was a rifle above the door and the settlers used it for hunting and for protecting their home. The museum was very interesting because there were a lot of artifacts. We hope you go to visit the museum too! Written by: Meghan, Sidhak, Charlotte, and Ethan 3. 5. Remembrance Day On November 11, our students, staff and members of our parent community came together for a very moving Remembrance Day Ceremony. Students honored the soldiers who have served our country through a moment of silence, dramatic presentations, video presentations, songs and poems. 6. Winter Weather As the winter weather approaches we would like to remind parents to ensure their child(ren) are dressed appropriately for the weather. It is better to assume that the students will be outside everyday then to send them to school without the appropriate outdoor wear. It is also important to remember that we do not have indoor supervision for students who are ill. If you feel that your child is too sick to be outside during recess then they are probably too ill to be at school.

7. Kindergarten Registration

Kindergarten registration will commence on January 16, 2015 for the 2015-16 school year. Registration forms are available on YRDSB’s website: www.yrdsb.ca. Children who turn four or five years old during 2015, live within the school boundary and whose parents are public school tax supporters will be eligible to register for kindergarten. A kindergarten information session for parents is being planned for this spring. For more information please visit the YRDSB website or you can contact our main office at 905-642-1236.

8. EQAO Strategic Plan Survey The Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) is developing a new Strategic Plan that will guide the agency’s efforts for the next five years. Schools across the province use data provided by EQAO as one of several tools to aid in the development of school improvement planning. To help understand how the agency’s work can be most valuable to school communities in the years ahead, the EQAO is asking school communities to complete the EQAO Strategic Plan Survey. This survey is open to anyone in the school community and can be located on the EQAO website (www.EQAO.com). 9. French Immersion Information Sessions and Registrations Information sessions for the French Immersion (FI) program will take place at Summitview P.S. on January 15, 2015 at 7 p.m. FI registration will begin January 16, 2015. In order to streamline the registration process, parents or guardians of Senior Kindergarten students entering Grade 1 in 2015, and wishing to enroll in the FI Program, can visit or call the school office and request an Office Index Card - short version. The Office Index Card must be signed by the principal of the home school. Parents or guardians then take this form, along with one piece of identification showing their address to Summitview P.S. to register between January 16 and February 13, 2015. This eliminates the need to provide duplicate enrollment information or to pre-register. YRDSB’s FI Accommodation Plan provides long-term consistency and equity of access to all students in York Region and will enable YRDSB to continue to offer the FI program to all who wish to enrol. The FI program will be offered in Dual Track or Single Track settings, in a variety of configurations. In order to meet community needs and optimize available space in our schools, a community's Grade 1-8 FI program may be provided over more than one school during the course of a student's FI education. This will allow flexibility in addressing community needs and the opportunity to use existing space in schools. More information is available on the Board’s website: www.yrdsb.ca. Please note: Some of the FI accommodation plans will require facility modifications or the development of new schools and will require short-term transition plans that might include overflow while we work toward the long-term vision. Overflow refers to situations in which the Board directs students to attend a school other than their community school or optional program for a specific period of time, as defined in Policy #108.

10. Dropping Off Your Child A reminder to parents dropping off/picking up students to use the Kiss & Ride on the parking lot side of the school. Staff supervise this area 15 minutes before and after school. To help keep drop-offs running smoothly, parents are asked not to park in this area. Our staff will help your children to get in or out of the car. If you feel the need to personally walk your child to the yard, please park on the road. A reminder that the bus loop is not to be used for this purpose and vehicles must not be parked in this area at any time as it is a designated Fire Zone. The York Region Police and Town By-Laws department are monitoring the use of both of these areas. 11. Me to We Me to We is a social justice group. We are a group of dedicated students who are moved by the issues in our world today. We want to make a positive impact on the lives of people in need in our school, community and around the world. Me to We is affiliated with the FREE THE CHILDREN charity and focuses on the 5 pillars: Agriculture, clean water and sanitation, Health, Education, and Alternative Income. Each year our group takes on fundraising for an international initiative and supports a local initiative This year for our local initiative we held our annual food drive, WE SCARE HUNGER. Our food drive was held from October 28-Novemeber 14th. Students were encouraged to support this drive by bringing in non-perishable food. The food bank was in need of our donations more than ever, because of a theft at the church where the food bank is located. When we told the OPPS community about this tragedy, donations started to poor in. Some students of the ME to WE group and their parents delivered the food to the food bank on Saturday November 22nd. We arrived at the food bank with 1386 non-perishable food items. The students and parents of the ME to WE group freely volunteered their time and continued to stay after the food was delivered to sort and stack the items for families in need. Thank you to the wonderful and supportive community at OPPS. We truly are making a difference in our school, community and around the world.

Please take the time to read the attachments to this e-Bulletin. They provide information regarding school and community initiatives.
