We are very pleased to announce that our founding trustee, Ajay Gudka, was presented an Oshwal Achievement Award recently. This recognises Ajay’s charity work in the field of Education and Health in India. Ajay set up BEHT as a registered charity in 1998 after visiting India a few times in the 90’s. There he met Pujya Muktanandji, a saint living near the Gir Jungle in the Junagadh District of Gujarat. They developed a strong friendship, which led them to establishing various trusts to educate children, improve the health of the locals, support the elderly, as well as care for animals. Since then, BEHT has raised £2.5 million which has been used to set up 4 educational centres in Gujarat, a 172 bed hospital, a Vrudh ashram for elderly people, a school for the blind, and a dairy farm. Recently they have embarked on an outreach programme to build 32 new schools in the villages surrounding Chaparda, the main location of these projects. They are also helping to revolutionise the farming in this area by introduction of technologies such as drip irrigation, green and net houses. To sum up, BEHT is directly improving approximately 10,000 lives in Gujarat, but undoubtedly this figure rises as the effects diffuse out to others in contact. www.beht.org Newsletter Issue No. 12 2015 Oshwal Achievement Award Nepal Earthquake Appeal A devastating Earthquake struck Nepal on 26th April 2015. Over 8000 people lost their lives and many thousands had their homes and livelihoods destroyed. Soon after the earthquake, BEHT and BET made an important decision to go to Nepal and offer relief work. We felt that being in a position to offer help, we should act upon this, instead of being a well-wishing bystander. Within 3 days, Pujya Muktanand Bapu arrived in Nepal with a team of 50 volunteers. They surveyed the area outside Kathmandu and decided to concentrate their relief efforts in roughly 20 villages north west of the capital city. In most emergencies of this kind, the primary requirements are food and clean water. Pujya Bapu set up a kitchen in each village to distribute food to the locals. These communal kitchens continued serving food for six weeks after which, monthly food packs were rationed to individual families. The next phase of relief work has involved erecting temporary shelters (as seen in the photo above) so that a degree of normalcy can be restored to the villagers’ lives. There was also a huge need to raise morale and calm the locals at a time when their lives had already been broken, and aftershocks from the earthquake caused further fear and uncertainty. So every evening Bapu used to gather the village together, talk to them and get them to sing local songs. This proved successful in helping them mentally rid their phobia. BEHT’s appeal for financial help has been very successful – BEHT has received just under £ 50,000 from 170 donors! So a very big thank you to all those who have donated! New School in Savarkundla A new school in Savarkundla has just opened to educate 300 children from slum areas. The building work started in November and finished at the end of June, ready for the start of the Indian school year. The children are excited and eager to study – a few years ago, a lack of any schools meant that this was not even an option for them! Here they will learn to read, write & do maths, which will give them a solid foundation to move forward. We wish to send out a regular e-newsletter. There is always a need for donors who can sponsor whole or part of a building project, or fi xtures and fi ttings for these buildings. If you are interested in donating a substantial amount towards a capital project, please contact BEHT for further information.

A donation of £ 451 annually will educate and board 1 child. BEHT has approx.4000 children receiving education at it’s 4 centres, namely Chaparda, Adhoi, Junagadh and Savarkundla. Of these, about 500 children are sponsored byoverseas donors. These are either orphans or children from a very poorbackground who cannot afford to pay fees .

Feed children and elders on a special day

-‘ Tithi’ For a special day, like anniversaries, birthdays, marriage, a religious occasion like Paryushan, or in memory of a departed loved one (tithi) – A donation of £ 451 (1 meal a day) or of £ 1251 (3 meals a day) will feed about 2000 children, elders and staff on that day in Chaparda.

Sponsor an elderly person’s upkeep

A donation of £ 301 annually will help to provide boarding, food, clothes, medicine and other expenses for an elderly person for a year.

These elderly people come mainly from small villages and are either living alone or have been cast out from their familywith nowhere else to go. They often have very little personal wealth.

The majority of them live here in dignity until they die. BEHT has about 100 such elders in residence at Chaparda.

Feed the animals in the dairy farm

A donation of £ 140 will help to feed about 300 cows in the dairy farm for a day, which produces milk for the children, elderly and staff at both schools.

Giving to charity may improve your sense of well-being The act of helping others can create an improved sense of well-being. Knowing that you sacrifi ced something such as time, fi nances or property in order to help others in need can give you a sense of purpose in life or work and inner satisfaction.

Supporting a cause can help keep you informed about issues of social injustice When considering donating to a charity, many people tend to research the issues connected to that organization. As a result, you become more educated about social injustices around the world. You may discover new points of view and opinions on topics about which you were previously uninformed. This knowledge may position you to help increase the awareness of social problems among those in your sphere of infl uence from a balanced and educated standpoint.

Giving to charity out of spiritual conviction can strengthen your spiritual lifeSelfl ess giving is a key component to many spiritual and religious belief systems. Recognizing that you have taken action in line with your spiritual beliefs by offering your resources to others in need can bring a sense of inner peace and contentment.

Volunteering with a charity may result in physical and social benefi tsAfter donating fi nancially to a charity or non-profi t organization, you may feel an inner pull to become more involved with the cause by donating your time and skill as well. Nepal Earthquake Appeal

A devastating Earthquake struck Nepal on 26th April 2015.

These communalkitchens continued serving food for six weeks after which, monthly food packs were rationed to individual families. The next phase of relief work has involved erecting temporaryshelters (as seen in the photo above) so that a degreeof normalcy can be restored to the villagers’ lives.

There was also a huge need to raise morale and calm the locals at a time when their lives had already been broken, and aftershocks from the earthquake caused further fear and uncertainty. So every evening Bapu used to gather the village

together, talk to them and get them to sing local songs. This proved successful in helping them mentally rid their phobia.

BEHT’s appeal for fi nancial help has been very successful – BEHT has received just under £ 50,000 from 170 donors! So a very big thank you to all those who have donated!

New School in Savarkundla

A new school in Savarkundla has just opened to educate 300 children from slum areas. The building work started in Novemberand fi nished at the end of June, ready for the start of the Indian school year. The children are excited and eager to study – a few years ago, a lack of any schools meant that this was not even an option for them! Here they will learn to read, write & do maths, which will give them a solid foundation to move forward.

We wish to send out a regular e-newsletter. If you wish to keep up to date with all the work we are doing in India and of any future events that are taking place in the UK, please contact us with your email id at [email protected]
