We’re pretty similar

• Founded in 2004

• OpenStreetMap Foundation, non-profit UK limited company started in 2006

• Freely-licensed geospatial data contributed by a community of volunteers

• It’s also enormously addictive

Contributing

• Get user account

• Collect traces with a GPS device with GPX export.

• Other formats than GPX can be converted using GPSBabel

Town and city• There’s lots that needs doing, but it’s

mostly maintenance of existing content (like WP!)

• To find things to do, go to the OSM wiki: wiki.openstreetmap.org and type in city – e.g. London.

• Metadata improvements, pubs, churches, public toilets, schools, bus stops etc.

In the countryside:loads to do!

• Get GPS trace off device

• Login

• Upload

• Wait patiently...

• Edit map

• Trace

• Save

• Repeat until barnstar ;-)

Why?• OSM now used in Wikipedia apps

• Can be reused within Wikimedia projects?

• Imagine: Wikiversity? Wikispecies?

• Can be used as part of GLAM/partnership work

• Fits within our mission!
