WELL-PREPARED FOR PERFECT RESULTS

You will feel it if your floor has been sanded correctly. Finely sanded wood soothes the senses. Its surface is extremely smooth but still has a lively look. In contrast to plastic or metal surfaces, you can always touch the annual rings in wood. Along the grain, the organic material feels smooth, and dull against the grain. Thus, always make sure to work along the wood grain.

FLOOR PREPARATION

Page 7: Osmo Wood Finishing and Maintenance 2015

7

A perfectly sanded and with Polyx®-Oil finished floor cannot be penetrated by dirt – as by nature, a tree has a tight cell structure. This structure is torn open by splitting the tree trunk into boards; the boards are then rough sawn. Whilst processing rough sawn boards into floorboards, the wood is planed and sanded. After installation, the flooring is once again sanded in preparation for applying oils. Floors which have been finished with oils and waxes do not have

PERFECT SANDING STEP BY STEP

to be sanded completely. For damaged floors, whether once lacquered or new and untreated, perfect sanding is an absolute prerequisite for applying oils successfully.

1ST STEP

Sandpaper grit: very coarse to middle (P 40 – 80). Depending on the surface, start with either P 40 (for old finishes) or P 80 (for raw wood) sanding grit. Important: please do not skip steps in grit whilst sanding. Tools: sandpaper or belt sander

2ND STEP

Grit: middle (P 100). Tools: sandpaper or belt sander or a single or multiple disc machine

3RD STEPFill cracks and holes: with Osmo wood filler (for up to 2 mm in depth)

4TH STEP

Grit: middle (P 100). Tools: sandpaper or sanding mesh or a single or multiple disc machine

5TH STEP

Grit: fine (P 120). Tools: sandpaper or sanding mesh or a single or multiple disc machine

POLYX®-OIL AND WOOD WAX FINISH CLEAR EXTRA THIN

WOOD STAYS WOOD. NATURAL AND VIVID. AND IT CAN EVEN WITHSTAND LANDING TOY PLANES.

Wood is an organic material. Similar to human skin, it can absorb and release moisture. Wood breathes. Osmo developed wood finishes which are perfectly matched to and preserve the-se special characteristics of wood. Oils penetrate into the wood and protect it from inside. Waxes form an elastic, microporous surface which protects the surface from the outside. Wood retains its natural beauty permanently.

POLYX®-OILS: ALMOST INVISIBLE PROTECTION FOR WOO-DEN FLOORING.

Do you love wood? Then treat it to the correct protective finish. Transparent Polyx®-Oil protects it from wear and tear, dirt and moisture without changing its natural character and beauty.

Osmo Polyx®-Oils are based on natural oils and waxes. They are resistant to perspiration and saliva, food-safe and even suitable for children’s toys. Polyx®-Oil Original or Rapid, both accentuate the wood’s natural colour tone and create a beautiful permanent wet effect.

PROPERTIES

With Polyx®-Oil Effect Natural, you keep the natural light elegan-ce of your wooden floor permenantly. Conventional clear oils can darken the wood and result in a more intensive colour tone – as if the wood was wet. Polyx®-Oil Effect Natural works against this effect. White, almost invisible pigments ensure the wood stays light-coloured like raw, freshly cut wood. After the first coat with Polyx®-Oil Effect Natural is dry, we recommend applying a final top coat of clear Polyx®-Oil.

MANUAL PROCESSING

1. Before applying, stir well in a bucket so that any putty settled at the bottom is mixed in.

2. Mix in sanding dust, at best from the same type of wood with a grain size of 80 – 120, into thick paste (approx. 15 % weight increase by adding sanding dust).

3. Fill in flooring diagonally with a stainless steel double blade scraper and at the same time press wood putty firmly into joints. Repeat process if necessary.

4. After 30 – 60 minutes the dried paste can be sanded coarsely (grain P80) and afterwards finely sanded (grain P100 – 120) so that no wood putty is left on the surface of the parquet. Most of the time, fine sanding with P100 – 120 is enough.

5. Subsequently treatment with various Osmo oil-wax systems can be carried out.

Note: As wood putty mixture and processing strongly depends on the wood type and on the sanding dust, we absolutely recommend carrying out a trial application! Do not fill joints in sprung or plank flooring!

MANUAL PROCESSINGFinished surface in 1 day

1. Open the bottle of Hardener and pour contents into the can of chosen wood finish. Empty bottle completely. Stir thoroughly.

2. Processing to be carried out corresponds to that of the chosen wood finish.

3. Drying time is reduced by approx. 50 % in comparison to the normal drying time of the chosen wood finish. (Normal climatic conditions, 23 °C/50 % rel. humidity.) Lower temperatures and/or higher humi-dity can increase drying time. Allow for good ventilation.

CLEANING, CARE, REFRESHING AND MAINTAINING

//

Wooden flooring treated with Osmo Polyx®- Oil will last for genera-tions. The protective diffusion-open finish allows wood to breathe keeping it healthy. The finish repels dirt and moisture. And should any soiling or damage occur, it is easy to clean and repair.

Care for oiled floors is easy if you follow some basic rules. Choosing the correct care product is a important. Other more aggressive all-purpose cleaners will break down the protective layer of Polyx®-Oils and cause your wooden floor to become more sensitive to dirt. To clean regularly, we recommend using a damp mop with the gentle, caring Osmo Wash and Care. You can refresh

the surface or remove tough stains by using the Osmo Liquid Wax Cleaner in private households and Maintenance Oil in public spaces.

Re-oiling with Polyx®-Oil is first necessary when the floor starts to show signs of wear and tear. It is not required to refinish the whole surface because wooden floors treated with Osmo Polyx®-Oils can be partially refinished or renovated. This obviously also applies to floors stained with Wood Wax Finish or Oil Stain.

With one touch: Osmo Spray-Mop has a cartridge for cleaners (Spray-Fix).

> Ideal for the quick and partial cleaning in between. > As an alternative, use the white Micro-Mop Plush from

the Osmo Opti-Set. > A dash of Osmo Wash and Care in mop water removes

everyday dirt and grime exceptionally, and thanks to the natural oils, it prevents the floor from drying out. Avoid using aggressive all-purpose cleaners.

> NOTE: Only use a damp – not wet – mop! When re-quired, dry afterwards.

DRY CLEANING

> Quick, quiet and economical: dry cleaning with the Dust-Mop.

> Osmo Opti-Set contains a Mop with a Telescopic Handle, a Dust-Mop, a Micro-Mop Plush and an Active-Fibre Cloth.

REGULAR DAMP MOPPING

How often your wooden flooring has to be mopped depends on the amount of use. In private households, a weekly cleaning routine is normally enough, in restaurants and other high traffic areas you should mop daily.

An oiled wooden floor repels dirt. In contrast to many other types of flooring, it does not charge up electrosta-tically and does not offer breeding grounds for microbes and allergens. Dust, lint or animal hair can be removed with a vacuum cleaner or broom. Cleaning is even easier with the Osmo Opti-Set. The green mop is especially developed for dry cleaning.

INTENSIVE CLEANING AND REFRESHING

MAINTAINING AND RE-OILING

Sometimes life can leave marks, even on optimally main- tained wooden flooring. No problem. That is why for an oiled wooden floor, the protective surface can be renewed at any time, without needing to sand the old finish. This is a huge advantage compared to lacquered wooden surfaces.

> Clean floors thoroughly beforehand. > Manual application: apply an extremely thin layer of

Osmo Polyx®-Oil with the Floor Brush or with the Osmo Microfibre Roller.

> Machine application: Osmo FloorXcenter for intensive cleaning and for applying Polyx®-Oils.

> Osmo Liquid Wax Cleaner cleans and regenerates in one step. Also available as spray.

> Osmo Maintenance Oil regenerates without forming a layer, special for public spaces

> For white oiled floors: Liquid Wax Cleaner or Maintenan-ce Oil in White Transparent

> For larger areas, we recommend the floor cleaning machine FloorXcenter.

From time to time, your wooden flooring needs to be re- freshed. In private households, refreshing is normally need-ed first after months. Osmo Liquid Wax Cleaner is ideal for this. That way the protective oil-wax layer is regenerated and your floor retains that special shine. In high traffic areas of restaurants and shops, Osmo Maintenance Oil should be used. This was especially developed for this application. Here regular refreshing can be sensible. Cleaning intervals depend on the amount of use.

TIPS AND TRICKS

CHANGING THE GLOSS LEVEL:

With Liquid Wax Cleaner, you can change the gloss level of your flooring. If it has become duller through the course of years, you can polish the top layer of your flooring with Liquid Wax Cleaner. Alternatively, you can also give a highly glossy floor a less sensitive satin-gloss.

CONSTRUCTION WOOD PROTECTION

Ensure that you have a sufficiently large foot mat which can act as a type of “dirt trap” for moisture, sand and dirt picked up on shoes. To protect the floor surface against scratching and dents, felt pads should be attached to the legs of tables, chairs and furniture. A protective mat should be used beneath chairs with wheels or castors. This is the only way in which you can efficiently protect the valuable wood surface against damage.

MAINTENANCE KIT FOR FLOORSThe Maintenance Kit for Floors contains 1 litre Wash and Care, 0.4 litre Liquid Wax Cleaner Spray, 3 cloths and comprehensive maintenance instructions for your wooden flooring.

PARTIAL RENOVATIONS

CLEAR

REMOVE SMALL FLAWS YOURSELF STEP BY STEP

AS GOOD AS NEW THROUGH SMALL REPAIRS

Sand the damaged surface thoroughly

A wooden floor treated with Polyx®-Oil can be renovated easily – also partially. This is a key advantage when compared to lacquered areas.

1. Separate the damaged area with masking tape.

2. Sand the damaged area thoroughly. The grit size of final sanding work should match the finished surface of the surrounding floorboards.

3. Remove sanding dust from the sanded area thoroughly with a vacuum cleaner.

4. Apply a thin layer of Polyx®-Oil evenly with Osmo Microfibre Roller.

5. Dry for approx. 8 – 10 hours. Allow for good ventilation.

6. After drying, apply another layer of Polyx®-Oil with a lint-free cotton cloth.

7. If the gloss level does not match the surrounding area after drying, it can be adjusted by polishing with Liquid Wax Cleaner.

Page 27: Osmo Wood Finishing and Maintenance 2015

27

In contrast to stained wooden flooring, wooden flooring treated with Polyx®-Oil Tints can also be renovated. The work steps are in principle the same as the steps taken for floors treated with clear oils.

1. Separate the damaged area with masking tape.

2. Sand the damaged area thoroughly. The grit size of final sanding work should match the finished surface of the surrounding floorboards.

3. Remove sanding dust from the sanded area thoroughly with a vacuum cleaner.

4. Prepare Polyx®-Oil Tints or mixture of Wood Wax Finish and Polyx®-Oil Original. Make sure to create exactly the same mixing ratio as the original coating. (Further information on page 19.)

5. Apply a thin layer of Polyx®-Oil Tints or mixture evenly with Osmo Microfibre Roller. Allow to dry for approx. 24 hours, and if the results do not match, possibly repeat the steps with a lint-free cloth. Afterwards allow to dry anew. TIP: Carry out trial applications on a leftover piece of flooring!

6. After drying, apply another layer of Polyx®-Oil with a lint-free cotton cloth. If the gloss level does not match the surroun-ding area after drying, see point 7, page 26.

CLEAR OR COLOURED

Apply Osmo Polyx®-Oil with the Microfibre Roller thinly. After drying, apply the 2nd coat very thinly with a lint-free cloth.

MANUAL OR MECHANICAL?

For high traffic or larger areas, we recommend regularly cleaning and maintaining the surface with FloorXcenter. This lightweight single disc machine is much faster and more efficient for these pur-poses. Achieving a light and even colour tone when staining a floor especially when working with certain application methods (e.g. “wet-on-wet”) can only be achieved with mechanical application. A professional contractor can also be used for the regular cleaning and care.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

CAN I STAIN MY WOODEN FLOOR A DIFFERENT COLOUR?

Yes, with Osmo Polyx®-Oil Tints and Wood Wax Finish. You can apply the finish easily by using a floor brush, roller or a brush, and then allow it to work in for a few minutes and wipe away the excess with a cloth, along the wood grain. Allow the floor to dry overnight, ensuring that there is good ventilation and then apply one thin coat of Polyx®-Oil to finish.

HOW SHOULD I PREPARE THE SURFACE OF MY WOOD FLOOR?

The surface should be sanded along the wood grain and finished with 120 –150 grit sandpaper. Care should be taken when removing all scratch marks.

WHAT HAPPENS IF PART OF MY FLOOR IS DAMAGED?

Unlike many of the traditional lacquers, damaged areas on floors treated with Osmo products can be sanded and re-treated with the same products without leaving any visible transitions (see page 26 – 27).

DO I NEED TO SAND BETWEEN COATS?

You should always assess the surface before applying the second coat, as sanding between coats may be necessary.

IS THERE ANYTHING SPECIAL TO WATCH OUT FOR WHEN TREATING HARDWOOD FLOORS?

Some hardwoods such as Jatoba and Merbau are dense and have a high content of ingredients, which reduces their capacity to absorb other finishes. Therefore we recommend treating woods such as these with Wood Wax Finish Clear Extra Thin or Osmo Polyx®-Oil 2K Pure, which penetrate deeply into the pores of these wood species.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I APPLY TOO MUCH PRODUCT WHEN TREATING A FLOOR?

If you have applied too much Polyx®-Oil, the drying time will be extended considerably. If this happens, provide additional ventilation by opening windows and doors so that the product can dry naturally through oxidation. If damage occurs to the surface as a result, repair the surface as described above.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I APPLY TOO LITTLE PRODUCT WHEN TREATING A FLOOR?

If you have applied too little of the product, water spots may appear, the wood may dry out or appear dull. In such cases, please apply another thin coat of Osmo Polyx®-Oil.

CAN I MIX ALL OSMO COLOUR TONES WITH EACH OTHER?

Yes. The colour tones of the respective product ranges can be mixed in any ratio. Osmo Wood Wax Finishes are mixable allowing for a larger colour range.

HOW LONG DOES THE SURFACE TAKE TO DRY?

Most Osmo products dry within 8 – 10 hours. The surface dries through oxidation and absorption. Please ensure that there is sufficient ventilation for drying purposes.

WHEN CAN I WALK ON THE FLOOR AGAIN?

As a general rule, the floor can be used one day after the final coat is applied. However, you must make sure that the final coat is dry to the touch. The surface will take 14 days to cure completely. As a result, rugs should first be placed on the surface after 2 – 3 weeks.

DOES THE FLOOR NEED POLISHING ONCE THE TOP COAT OF OSMO POLYX®-OIL HAS BEEN APPLIED?

No, at this stage no further floor treatment is necessary. However, the surface can be buffed with a single disc machine (white pad) once completely dry. If a higher level of gloss is desired, the floor can be treated after one day at the earliest with Osmo Liquid Wax Cleaner and then polished.

HOW DO I MAINTAIN MY FLOOR?

This all depends on how much it is used. For regular, protective cleaning, we recommend adding Osmo Wash and Care to mop water. Osmo Opti-Set and Spray-Mop have proven to be invaluable tools in maintaining floors (see pages 25). If the floor starts to look dull and lifeless, simply refresh it using Osmo Liquid Wax Cleaner. This can be done in small areas, e.g. near doors or on high traffic areas, without needing to refresh the whole floor area as our products do not leave any visible transitions. If the signs of wear and tear are more substanti-al, the floor should be re-treated with Osmo Polyx®-Oil.

WHY DOES THE FINISH LOOK DIFFERENT ON THE CAN?

Depending on the wood species they are applied on, finishes can appear differently in colour tone. This tone does not have to match the small sticker on the can. We recommend applying a small trial applica-tion on a similar piece of wood to test for the desired results.

HOW SHOULD THE WOOD SURFACE BE PREPARED BEFORE USING OSMO COLOR?

The surface must be clean, dry (max. 20 % moisture content) and frost-free.

WHAT DOES WOOD TREATED WITH OSMO PRODUCTS SMELL LIKE?

After drying, your wood flooring will have a slight smell of wood and natural oils and waxes. As a solvent, we use dearomatised white spirit, which is less harmful to the health than so-called „Eco“ solvents, such as citrus oils. The solvent dissipates 100 % after drying and curing.

DO OSMO PRODUCTS CONTAIN HARMFUL SUBSTANCES?

Osmo products are based on carefully purified natural oils and waxes, dried surfaces are safe for people, animals and plants (suitable for children’s toys as according to EN 71.3 and saliva-resistant and swe-atproof as according to DIN 53160).

NOTE FOR USING POLYX®-OILS

Cloths and material soaked with the liquid product should either be washed out immediately or stored in an airtight metal container (Dan-ger of self-ignition!).
