OsteoCentric Trauma INTERLOCKING BONE FASTENER SURGICAL TECHNIQUE

Introduction:

The OsteoCentric Trauma interlocking Bone Fastener is designed to provide a bone-implant interface

that is able to resist multi-directional loading encountered in-vivo. This improved interface is designed

to provide continued immobilization, bone loading, and anatomical reduction in all bone types.

The OsteoCentric Trauma Interlocking Bone Fasteners are manufactured in a variety of lengths and

diameters to accommodate different anatomic sizes of patients. The fasteners are provided non- sterile.

All fasteners are manufactured from Stainless Steel per ASTM F138.

Indications for Use:

The OsteoCentric Trauma 2.7mm Interlocking Bone Screw Fastener is intended for fractures and

osteotomies of small bones and bone fragments, including the foot, ankle, and hand in adults and in both

children (2-12 years) and adolescents (12-21 years) in which growth plates have fused or in which growth

plates will not be crossed by screw fixation.

The OsteoCentric Trauma 3.3mm Interlocking Bone Screw Fastener was designed to provide an

additional option to the 2.7mm and the 3.5mm bone screw fastener. The 3.3mm fastener has the same

core diameter as the 2.7mm fasteners with a 3.3mm outer diameter, resulting in a larger, more

aggressive tooth height for use in applications such as the distal fibula where surgeons can dictate a

preference for the 2.7 or a 3.3mm fastener.

The OsteoCentric Trauma 3.5mm Interlocking Bone Screw Fasteners are intended for fixation of fractures,

osteotomies, and non-unions of the clavicle, scapula, olecranon, humerus, radius, ulna, pelvis, tibia,

calcaneus, femur and fibula in adults and in both children (2-12 years) and adolescents (12-21 years) in

which growth plates have fused or in which growth plates will not be crossed by screw fixation.

General System Information:

The surgeon must select the type and size of the implant that best meets the patient’s surgical needs.

Refer to the Instructions for Use for indications, contraindications, precautions, warnings and cleaning

instructions. To obtain these materials or to obtain more information about products, please contact

Customer Service at 1-800-969-0639.

Insertion of an OsteoCentric Trauma interlocking Bone Fastener

Prior to surgery, ensure that the instrument set is

complete with fasteners and instrumentation (i.e.

drill bits, taps, and drivers).

Identify the appropriately sized screw to be used on the

anatomic area of operation.

Dissect down to the bone and reduce the fracture

Standard orthopedic instruments and techniques

should be used for reduction and to position the bone

for fixation.

Page 6: OsteoCentric Trauma Bone Fastener Surgical Technique Guide · All fasteners are manufactured from Stainless Steel per ASTM F138. 3 . Indications for Use: The OsteoCentric Trauma 2.7mm

5

Expose the bone with appropriate aseptic

surgical technique.

Drill the near and far cortices of the bone with the

appropriately sized drill bit.

The drill bit diameter is determined by the core

diameter of the screw.

Page 7: OsteoCentric Trauma Bone Fastener Surgical Technique Guide · All fasteners are manufactured from Stainless Steel per ASTM F138. 3 . Indications for Use: The OsteoCentric Trauma 2.7mm

6

Measure the screw length.

Insert a depth gauge into the hole which was drilled.

Use the depth gauge to measure the length of the hole

which was drilled to determine the desired length of the

screw that will be inserted.

Page 8: OsteoCentric Trauma Bone Fastener Surgical Technique Guide · All fasteners are manufactured from Stainless Steel per ASTM F138. 3 . Indications for Use: The OsteoCentric Trauma 2.7mm

7

Tap the hole.

When utilizing fasteners that do not have the self-

tapping cutting flutes, use the appropriately sized tap to

prepare the bone for screw insertion. When using the

self-tapping fasteners in dense, hard bone, it is

recommended to use the appropriately sized tap to

prepare the bone for screw insertion.

Note: If during insertion of any fastener excessive

insertion torque is encountered, it is recommended to

remove the fastener and utilize the correctly sized tap

to prepare the bone for fastener insertion.

8

Insert the fastener.

Identify the driver in the orthopedic set.

Attach the appropriately sized fastener identified in

step one and step five to the driver.

Page 10: OsteoCentric Trauma Bone Fastener Surgical Technique Guide · All fasteners are manufactured from Stainless Steel per ASTM F138. 3 . Indications for Use: The OsteoCentric Trauma 2.7mm

9

Advance the fastener by turning the driver

clockwise until the fastener is firmly seated in the

bone.

Do not use excessive force as the fastener threads may

strip eliminating fixation in the bone.
