Backbone Award: Donna Cronmiller It came as no surprise to all - with the exception of Donna - that Donna Cronmiller is our most recent recipient of the Backbone Award. Donna truly exhibits National’s criteria of one who donates countless hours of their time, talents and energy to their fellow citizens.

Spring Public Forum and Volunteer Appreciation Celebration Canad Inns Transcona was the setting for the Manitoba Chapter’s spring forum and volunteer recognition on the evening of April 15th. Participants were welcomed and volunteers were commended by our Chapter Chair, Cherylle Unryn.

Fitting to the appreciation and celebration of the Chapter’s nearly 90 volunteers, was the presentation of the Backbone Award to our long-time, dedicated volunteer, Donna Cronmiller. This national Osteoporosis Canada (OC) award is presented to a chapter volunteer whose efforts and ideas have made a significant impact to the success of OC. Donna graciously accepted the award which was presented by Cherylle Unryn. At the end of the evening, our volunteers went home with a special gesture of appreciation, a beautiful long-stemmed crimson-pink rose.

The forum theme, Demystifying the Diagnosis, was addressed by Dr. Bill Leslie, MD MSc FRCPC. Dr. Leslie has published extensively and shared his wealth of knowledge on diagnosis and prognosis of the disease osteoporosis. We learned that the Canadian FRAX tool is highly reliable and a valid indicator in assessing one’s risk of fracture. A Q&A session was facilitated by emcee Pat McCarthy-Briggs, and refreshments brought an informative and celebratory evening to a close.

Donna joined the Chapter’s volunteer team in 2009, quickly becoming a member of our Tea with a Twist Committee, on which she served for four years. The Chapter hosted OC’s National AGM/Conference in 2011, and Donna joined the planning committee, taking a lead in organizing

and coordinating the Saturday evening Awards Dinner and hosting the hospitality suite for our guests. Other areas where Donna volunteers her time and passions are the Chapter’s public forums, our annual bridge tournament, and visitations to seniors’ residences promoting good bone health, to name just a few. Additionally, Donna is the facilitator of the Newly Diagnosed information sessions that are held monthly, and co-facilitator of the Chapter’s “Osteo Connections” support group.

Congratulations Donna on being this year’s recipient of the Backbone Award!

A special thanks is extended to our forum sponsors: Pharmacy at Safeway, The Free Press, Dairy Farmers of Manitoba, and the Manitoba Government.

Osteoporosis in the Workplace In 2002, the International Osteoporosis Foundation published a report titled Osteoporosis in the Workplace, looking in particular at the European Union, the United States and Canada. The report estimated that at that time the annual direct cost of treating osteoporotic fractures of people in the workplace in the USA, Canada and the European Union was approximately $48 billion. In Canada alone, the estimated cost was about $1.9 billion. This cost does not include the indirect economic costs and huge emotional price that has to be paid by someone who has suffered a hip fracture or a broken bone in their spine. Osteoporotic fractures in patients younger than 60 lead to higher relative indirect costs: sick leave, loss of job days and related income, unemployment and disability payments and loss of productivity to the employer, as well as emotional distress for the patient not to mention the family who now become care givers.

A recently published report states, “The number of days missed from work (in Canada) due to osteoporosis-related fractures is estimated at 3,123,298 days (12,013 full-time employment years) for individuals aged 50 to 69 years.” ¹ Many health insurance plans do not reimburse the costs of diagnosis and treatment until one has fractured. More often than not, osteoporosis is not recognized in the workplace as a chronic condition that needs to be accommodated.

committed Chapter volunteer, who shared her story of how osteoporosis has impacted her life. Attendees were moved by Joan’s incredible strength, determination and optimism.

The upscale silent auction with minimum bids and unique themes such as golf getaways, spa treatments, theatre tickets and more, created much interest and enthusiastic bidding.

Chapter Chair Cherylle Unryn and Canadian Osteoporosis Patient Network (COPN) Chair Cheryl Baldwin commended the dedicated and enduring work of the volunteers who organized the event.

This concerted effort has helped the Manitoba Chapter to continue with its education, advocacy, and support of those in our community affected by osteoporosis.

Our sincere gratitude is expressed to the following for helping to make this event such a success:

We are currently seeking new members for our Volunteer Development Committee

Members of this vital committee contribute to the ongoing work of volunteer program administration for the Chapter. In addition to attending monthly meetings, committee members can contribute in a number of ways. They can help plan the Chapter’s annual action plan, assist with recruiting and training new volunteers, help to prepare volunteer award nominations, contribute to the preparation of Chapter newsletters, or help to organize and participate in Chapter volunteer events.

The following Committees also have openings: Communications committee members are needed to

help publicize Chapter events

Special Event committee members are needed to help plan and implement the Cheese and Wine or Bones ‘n’ Beer fundraising events

Education presenters, Health fair display representatives and Stand Tall Clinic facilitators are needed on an ongoing basis

Are you interested in volunteering with us in a new capacity? We aim to ensure that our volunteers are able to share their expertise, or to explore an area outside their expertise and be further stimulated by new learning.

Is someone you know interested in joining our team of dedicated volunteers? Time commitments are very flexible and volunteers can work in the office, join a committee, assist with a Health Fair display and educate the public about the importance of maintaining strong bones, just to mention a few of our wide-ranging opportunities. A common slogan amongst Manitoba Chapter volunteers is: “We work hard, and we have lots of fun, too!”

For more information on any of these opportunities, please contact the Chapter office.

We appreciate the generosity of all who donated prizes for our terrific silent auction.

Thursday, March 10, 2016 Save this date in your calendar for next year’s event!
