  • Oswald Hindley was born at Weaverham, Northwich, Cheshire on 1st May 1877. He was

    christened on 16th

September 1877 at Weaverham Parish Church (listed on P.184 of the

Church Register for Baptisms.) His father was a gamekeeper. BGGBGGBBBGBB

He was the ninth child of David and Beatrice Hindley.

The 1881 Census told us that Oswald was 3 years old and that he was living in Beech Lane, Weaverham with his parents.

    By the time of the 1891 Census Oswald, aged 13 years, had moved with his parents to Clay Croft House, Anderton (now a farmhouse). His father, David, a gamekeeper, was 50;

and his mother, Beatrice was 49. Also at the house were three brothers of Oswald and four

sisters. There does not seem to have been a farmer living on the site in 1891.

The 1891 Census lists William Johnson (61) farm labourer and his wife Hannah (68) living at

Clay Croft Farm. In the pictures on the following page I believe that David and his family

were in the larger farm house and that the farm labourer was living in the cottage close by.

Tragedy struck the household in 1894 when Oswald’s father, David Hindley, died. Luckily for the family, the owner of the Marbury Estate, Lord Barrymore, allowed the family to stay

at Clay Croft House. His mother, Beatrice, was, generously, given a pension for life by Lord

    Barrymore.

Oswald was still living at Clay Croft House at the time of the 1901 Census. His age was given as 24 years old and he was a tester at a chemical works – most likely at Brunner Mond

    & Co. He was single.

    OSWALD HINDLEY (1877-1925) 1877OSWA/2

Oswald served in the First World War and his name is recorded on a plaque at the Lyche

Gate of Great Budworth Church. He was not on the list of those who lost their lives.

  • Over the next few years Oswald must have been considering his future as he did not want to

be stuck at a chemical works for the rest of his life.

He made a brave decision to emigrate to Canada. On 25th

May 1910 he set sail from Liverpool on the “Lake Champlain”, bound for Montreal.

    passenger transcript details

The original Canadian Passenger List for the boat is not very distinct but I can make out that

Oswald arrived in Canada on 15th

June 1910. His destination was Calgary, Alberta, and his intended occupation was Farming. Oswald was 32 years of age and single. He had $25

(Canadian Dollars) with him. His religion was Church of England. He was travelling

    overland by Canadian Pacific Railways.

Oswald’s brother, Frederick, was quick to follow his brother to Canada. Frederick

arrived in 1911, and Charles joined them in 1913.

At the time of the 1911 Canadian Census Oswald and Frederick were lodging at a boarding

house in Calgary. The boarding house was at 6224st Street W Calgary.

about Oswald Willey (The transcriber typed Willey instead of Hindley)

    Name: Oswald Willey Gender: Male

Oswald’s youngest brother, Charles, arrived in Canada on 27th

April 1913. Charles’s destination was Calgary, Alberta, so it looks as though the three brothers were together in

    Calgary in 1913.

The First World War began in 1914 and Oswald and Charles enlisted in the Canadian Over-

seas Expeditionary Force on 21st May 1917. They gave their address as Wynndel, near

Creston, British Columbia so they must have moved from Calgary between 1913 and 1917.

Below, you will see the Attestation Paper that Oswald signed when he joined the army.
