La Ruta Patrimonial Campo de Hielo Sur Los Glaciares,atraviesa uno de los parajes más sobrecogedores del mundo,recorriendo sendas y caminos que conectan esta región tan pococonocida de nuestro país y accediendo a los valles del extremosur del lago O’Higgins. DESCRIPCION GENERALDE LA RUTA

La Ruta Patrimonial Campo deHielo Sur: Los Glaciares es un circuitode 79,1 kilómetros. Se inicia y terminaen el embarcadero de CandelarioMansilla, a orillas del lago O’Higgins,en el extremo sur de la XI Región delGeneral Carlos Ibáñez del Campo.

El recorrido atraviesa enormesatractivos naturales, bosques centenariosde Lenga (Nothofagus pumilio) yformaciones de bosque achaparrado entrelos 700 y 1000 m.s.n.m. En los crucesde los cordones montañosos, se puedeobservar el hábitat de la estepa altoandinay sus pisos vegetacionales.

La Ruta es una oportunidad especialpara reconocer la avifauna nativa, entrebosques y estepas puede sorprender elCarpintero Negro (Campephilusmagellanicus); la Viudita (Colorhamphusparvirostris) o la Dormilona Rufa(Musciasaxicola capitrata).

Gran parte del Campo de Hielo Surestá formado por imponentes glaciaresque, con su hábitat asociado, hacen queesta Ruta sea una fuente de inspiraciónpara naturalistas interesados ene c o s i s t e m a s y f e n ó m e n o sgeomorfológicos o glaciológicos, los queson un verdadero museo natural a laintemperie de los cielos australes.

GENERAL DESCRIPTIONOF THE ROAD

Southern Ice Field PatrimonialRoad, The Glaciers, is a 79.1 kilometercircuit. It starts and ends at CandelarioMansilla quay, on the banks ofO’Higgins lake, at the south end ofRegion XI of General Carlos Ibáñezdel Campo.

The journey comprises hugenatural wonders, centennial Lengaforests (Nothofagus pumilio) andshrubby forest formations between 700and 1000 meters above the sea level.High Andean steppe habitat and itsvegetation floors may be observed incrossings of mountain ranges.

The Road provides a specialopportunity to recognize native birdfauna. Between forests and steppes,you may be surprised by BlackWo o d p e c k e r ( C a m p e p h i l u sm a g e l l a n i c u s ) ; “ Vi u d i t a ”(Colorhamphus parvirostris), a littlekind of parrot, or “Dormilona Rufa”(Musciasaxicola capitrata).

austral skies.Small glacier, GAEA glacier,

and O’Higgins glaciers are some ofthe glaciers that can be seen fromthe Road. The latter measures 810square kilometers and is the fourthbiggest of the Southern Ice Field,after Pío XI, Viedma, Upsala.O`Higgins glacier shows a uniquepanoramic view of a more than 60meter high and over 4 km long glacialfront. You will be able to admire thesegrandiose tracks of the past, withO’Higgins mountain range as yourwitness.

The Road has been structuredinto seven segments, divided inaccordance with their territorial andtransitability characteristics. Thefirst 6.7 kilometers correspond to thepublic road, therefore, it is fit for four-wheel drive motor vehicles, bicycle,horse, or walking. The next 65.9kilometers are only fit for walkingand horse-riding. Do not try to travelthe road in motorcycle.

If you will walk, you must atleast consider 5 days to complete thecircuit from “Candelario Mansilla”.If you prefer horse-riding, you willtake 4 days. However, a couple ofdays extra is suggested for furthersafety.

For those who are not used tolong walks, note that difficulties ofthis Road are only restricted to its

glaciar O’Higgins, son algunos de losglaciares que se pueden ver desde laRuta, este último de 810 kilómetroscuadrados y el cuarto glaciar másextenso del Campo de Hielo Sur,superado únicamente por el Pío XI,Viedma y Upsala. El glaciarO`Higgins presenta una panorámicainigualable de un frente glacial, másde 60 metros de altura y 4 kilómetrosde longitud. Usted puede admirar estasimponentes huellas del pasado,teniendo como testigo el cordón delcerro O’Higgins.

La Ruta se ha estructurado ensiete tramos, divididos en función desus características territoriales y detransitabilidad. Los primeros 6,7kilómetros corresponden al caminopublico, por lo tanto es apto paravehículos motorizados de dobletracción; bicicleta; caballo o biencaminando, los siguientes 65,9kilómetros aptos sólo para caminatay cabalgata. Por ningún motivo intenterealizar la ruta en moto.

Para los caminantes, se debeconsiderar como mínimo 5 días pararealizar el circuito completo desde

“Candelario Mansilla”. Para los queprefieren cabalgata, 4 días, sinembargo se sugiere un par de jornadasmás para mayor seguridad.

Para quienes no estén acostum-brados a largas caminatas hay quedestacar que las dificultades de esta

SignalingDesign of marks implemented in

the field is based on a Frenchexperience. It is a pioneer system inthis ambit, and world-wide recognizedfor its efficiency and simplicity, andhas been complemented with SNUPIES,which are represented by Arabicnumbers, often located next to themarks indicating road and direction.Each of the numbers has its ownmeaning, as described in thistopoguide.

The road is made up by 20 pointsif interest (SNUPIES) and 138continuity marks, all of them geo-referenced, mainly using trees and dry-stone walls as signaling support.

Distance between marks variesdepending on characteristics of thesegment. Mark signaling has beenintensified in places where track isweaker or inexistent.

From SNUPIE Nr 1, you walkin the middle of Obstáculo rivervalley, always by the public road.Approximately one kilometer later,you will reach “Hernán MerinoCorrea” police station, next to theold aerodrome. Here, you mayrequest further information on theRoad and obtain the first panoramicviews of O’Higgins lake. If weatheris good and you have time, cross theaerodrome until getting to the edge:a small and beautiful beach will bewaiting for you.

From the police station, followthe road heading south, starting aslope where you will have amazingpanoramic views of O’Higgins lake,as well as observing contrast ofvisible landscapes when projectingthe sight to the Argentinean side,where the lake is called San Martín.

Following by the slope, you will

Aquí podrá solicitar mayorinformación de la Ruta y tener lasprimeras vistas panorámicas del lagoO’Higgins. Si el día le acompaña, ydispone de tiempo, cruce el aeródromohasta llegar a la puntilla, lo estaráesperando una pequeña y hermosa playa.

Desde la tenencia siga por elcamino en dirección sur, iniciando unacuesta en la que podrá tener a unasincreíbles panorámicas del lagoO’Higgins, y observar el contraste depaisajes visibles al proyectar la miradahacia el lado argentino, donde este lagorecibe el nombre de San Martín.

Avanzando por la cuesta, divisaráa su derecha el río Obstáculo con su

You will now see thefirst Lenga (Nothofagus pumilio) virginforests, until getting to top of the slope,where you will find a natural mirador(SNUPIE Nr 2) of Fitz Roy hill's range,a privileged site from which you canobserve unique panoramic views ofthe Chilean side. If weather conditionsare good, you will be in the presenceof these mythical mountains that haveconstituted a milestone in Patagoniangeography for almost one century,highlighting Fitz Roy hill (3441 a.t.s.l.a.t.s.l. = above the sea level) andTorres hill (3102 a.t.s.l.), consideredby many one of the most beautiful anddifficult mountains in the world:conquering it is a real challenge. Werecommend you to approach a smallrocky promontory, just at the otherside of the road, from which you canenjoy the spectacular view and take arest before starting to climb Coloradohill range (1799 a.t.s.l.).

Following the road, you willfind SNUPIE Nr 3, few metersaway, that indicates a bifurcationthat will take you away from theroad to start walking by a pathwhich climbs Obstáculo rivervalley in its south spring.

profundo cañón que obstaculizacualquier intención de cruzarlo.Comenzará a observar los primerosbosques vírgenes de Lenga (Nothofaguspumilio), hasta llegar a la parte más altade la cuesta, donde encontrará unmirador natural (SNUPIE Nº 2), delcordón de montañas del cerro Fitz Roy,lugar privilegiado desde donde tendrálas únicas panorámicas del lado chileno.Si las condiciones meteorológicas lopermiten, estará en presencia de estasmíticas montañas que han constituidopor casi un siglo, un hito de la geografíapatagónica, destacando el cerro Fitz Roy(3441 m.s.n.m.) y el cerro Torres (3102m.s.n.m.), por muchos considerada unade las montañas más hermosas y difícilesdel mundo, conquistarla es un desafío.Recomendamos acercarse a un pequeñopromontorio rocoso justo al otro ladodel camino, desde donde podrá paradisfrutar de la espectacular visual y deun merecido descanso, antes decomenzar a remontar el cordón del cerroColorado (1799 m.s.n.m.).

Continué por el camino, a pocosmetros, al lado derecho del camino seencuentra el SNUPIE Nº 3 que indicauna bifurcación que lo alejará delcamino para iniciar una huella queremonta el valle del río Obstáculo ensu vertiente sur.

Mientras avanza, tendrá asu derecha el río Obstáculo y a su izquierdaun pequeño estero, continúe hasta terminarla ladera inclinada y coincidente con eltérmino paulatino del bosque adulto hastaenfrentar un amplio sector de pantanos.Siga el rumbo general 310º algo más de600 metros hasta llegar a cruzar el primerarroyo de una serie de 6, siempre enpresencia de un bosque achaparrado, hastallegar al cerco divisorio del predio.

Avance algo más de 1 kilómetro, yllegará a la parte más alta del portezuelo,que corresponde a la divisoria de aguaslocales. Mantenga como referencia unapequeña laguna, ubicada a una altitud de1200 metros aproximadamente, la quedeberá bordear por la izquierda.

Dejando atrás la laguna, continúe porun sector plano hasta llegar al SNUPIENº 4 que indica el inicio de la bajada. Esun ambiente alto andino de vegas con untrecho de más de 5 kilómetros desprovistode formación boscosa, gran parte del añoeste sector de la ruta, está cubierto denieve.

Pasando el SNUPIE Nº 4, en lospróximos 2 kilómetros deberá cruzar 2esteros menores provenientes de lasladeras del cerro Vicente (1918 m.s.n.m.),

Leaving the lagoon behind,continue by a flat sector until gettingto SNUPIE Nr 4, which indicates thestart of descent. It is a high Andeanswampy terrain with an over 5kilometer extension lacking of forestformation. This sector is covered bysnow most of the year.

After SNUPIE Nr 4, in the next2 kilometers, you will have to cross2 small streams coming from Vicentehillsides (1918 a.t.s.l.), after which

Si las condiciones de visibilidad leacompañan, puede admirar durante suavance uno de los principales cordonesmontañosos de Campo de Hielo Surasociado al cerro O’Higgins, uno de losa c c i d e n t e s g e o g r á f i c o s m á sdesconocidos y bellos de la patagonia,altamente reconocido y admirado porlos antiguos exploradores. Soninnumerables las cumbres que se asomandestacándose el mismo cerro O’Higgins(2860 m.s.n.m.) y el cerro Cóndor (1810m.s.n.m.) así como los glaciarescolgantes que los cubren. No olvidetomar fotografías, si no tiene suerte, nose preocupe, en los siguientes tramostendrá mejores oportunidades.

Considere que desde el cruce delcitado estero principal sólo faltará unkilómetro y medio más para llegar alSNUPIE 5. En este recorrido tenga laprecaución, una vez ingresado al bosqueachaparrado, de tomar la izquierda einiciar la bajada más pronunciada antesde llegar al SNUPIE Nº 5 y dar fin alcruce del portezuelo.

El SNUPIE Nº 5, es un interesantemirador natural del cordón del cerroO’Higgins ubicado antes de iniciar labajada a la península del lago Chico.Desde aquí puede tener ampliaspanorámicas del sector sur occidentaldel lago O’Higgins y de la totalidad delLago Chico.

Es importante saber que lapenínsula del lago Chico representa uninteresante remanente del antiguo avancedel glaciar Chico, uno de los tantoscuerpos glaciares que componen elCampo de Hielo Sur, y característicopor el abundante material rocoso ycinerítico depositado en sus hielos,fenómeno que demuestra la vecindadcon el volcán Lautaro (3600 m.s.n.m.)el de mayor altitud de los Campos deHielo Sur. En este punto el paisaje pareceser único, tómese un momento paramirar y retener en la memoria lasimágenes que sólo han visto aventurerosexploradores y los antiguos colonos quese acercaron a estas lejanas tierras.

Note that Chico lake peninsulais an interesting remainder of Chicoglacier advance, one of the many icebodies that make up the SouthernIce Field, which is characteristic forthe large amount of rocky and ashymaterial deposited in its ices, aphenomenon that demonstratesproximity to Lautaro volcano (3600a.t.s.l.), the highest volcano in theSouthern Ice Fields. Ponga atención en el SNUPIE Nº7 señalizado en un pequeño arbusto enla orilla opuesta del desagüe.

Es fundamental considerar en estecruce algún tipo de embarcación. Porningún motivo intente cruzar por suspropios medios, debido a lascondiciones de profundidad, caudal ytemperatura del agua. En este sentidonecesariamente debe contactarse conlos vecinos del sector y considerar unbote para cruzarlo.

At this flat sector of thepeninsula, head west for slightlymore than 1 kilometer by firm terrainand abundant short thickets untilgetting to Chico lake drainage.

Continúe subiendo,este lomaje que parece ser una antiguamorrena lateral asociada al glaciar Chico.

En este avance mantendrá a suderecha el arroyo hasta llegar a unpequeño claro del bosque y miradornatural. Resulta interesante observardesde aquí el lago O’Higgins, lago Chicoy su península, cuya formación se asociaa un clásico ejemplo de depositaciónglacial de carácter terminal con antiguoscanales asociados a los distintos niveleslacustres. Es un sitio ideal paracontemplar formaciones geográficas yla flora nativa del entorno. Se encuentraprotegido de los vientos, lo que permiteun descanso antes de llegar al siguienteportezuelo.

Pasado el SNUPIE Nº 8 sigasubiendo hasta llegar a una marca que

La huella continúa por subidaleve con rumbo general 220º,derivando cada vez más a su derechahasta cruzar una quebrada y luegotomar la derecha y continuar subiendo.En este punto, debe cambiar el rumbogeneral, derivar más al poniente,siempre por la huella más marcadaentre un abundante bosque de Lengas.Aproximadamente a un kilómetro ymedio de la anterior quebrada, llegaráal portezuelo del Fundo “La Carmela”,correspondiente al SNUPIE Nº9.

Esta parada es sorprendente porla impactante panorámica del plateaudel Glaciar O’Higgins y del cordónde montañas que conforman el paisaje.

No se extrañe si se presentanfuertes vientos, es una situaciónnormal dada la vecindad con elCampo de Hielo Sur, lo que en generalproduce situaciones de extrema

inestabilidad atmosférica. En este sentido,es importante considerar los pronósticosde los habitantes locales, son altamenteconfiables a la hora de tomar decisionesrespecto a la continuidad de la Ruta.

Desde el SNUPIE Nº 9 inicie labajada tomando la ribera derecha de unalaguna a la que llegará en pocos metros,siempre por terrenos de vegas y bosquesachaparrados de Lenga. Considere undescenso paulatino al poniente hastallegar al cruce de un pequeño estero.Desde allí deberá andar unos 100 metrospara iniciar la marcha por un hermosobosque de esbeltas Lengas, entre laladera y una antigua morrena lateral, laque a poco andar deberá subir e ir porsu parte superior, bordeando el escarpe.Es un recorrido interesante que conjugaespléndidas panorámicas del entornocon el reconocimiento del hábitatparticular.

Siga la huella, justo antes de llegaral siguiente estero, tenga la precauciónde subir a su izquierda, montándose auna pequeña explanada húmeda dondepodrá observar algunos arboles secos.Cruce esta explanada teniendo comoreferencia una tranquera divisoria delpredio, pase por ella, (tenga laprecaución de dejarla cerrada) continúepor el pequeño y hermoso valleencajonado entre la ladera y el sistemamorrénico, pudiendo contemplarejemplares centenarios de Lenga; y paralos amantes del avistamiento de aves, lanaturaleza se encarga en estas latitudesdel incesante canto de las aves.

Aproximadamente a 400 metros dela anterior tranquera, procure fijarse enuna marca que le indica que deberámontarse nuevamente a la parte superiorde la morrena que está a su derecha. Nosiga por el fondo del pequeño valle, yaque las aguas del estero se lo impedirán.

Después de unos pocos minutos demarcha sobre la citada morrena, la huellalo conducirá al SNUPIE Nº 10, el quele indicará que está a pocos metros deun sector ideal para acampar o descansar.Es aconsejable iniciar el recorrido, desdeeste Snupie no más allá del mediodía,dadas las características del tramosiguiente y la posibilidad de disponerde suf ic iente t iempo para lacontemplación del paisaje en lospróximos puntos de interés.

Follow the track. Just beforearriving to the next stream, rememberto climb to the left by a moistesplanade where you will see somedry trees. Cross this esplanadehaving a rustic fence that divides theproperty as reference. Go through it(remember to leave it closed), keepgoing by the small and beautifulvalley that is squeezed in betweenthe hillside and the moraine system,where you can watch centennialLenga trees. For bird watching lovers,the nature will bring you in theselatitudes a never-ending bird singing.

Approximately 400 meters awayfrom the above described rustic fence,pay attention to a mark indicatingthat you will have to climb again tothe top of the moraine that is at yourright. Do not continue by the bottomof the small valley, since streamwater will prevent you fromadvancing.

After a few minutes of walk bythe above cited moraine, the trackwill lead you to SNUPIE Nº 10,which will indicate you that you arefew meters away from an ideal sectorto rest or camp. Travel from thisSnupie has to start before noon, inview of characteristics of the nextsegment and the possibility to havetime enough to watch the landscapein coming points of interest.

Descripción del Tramo:Desde el SNUPIE Nº 10, avance unospocos metros y tome el desvió a laizquierda, dejando la morrena lateral ydando inicio a una subida por la laderaopuesta. Desde allí deberá enfrentar unasubida al poniente hasta justo antes dellimite superior del bosque adulto. Tomeuna huella a su mano derecha que, apoco andar, lo hará salirse del bosquepara acceder directamente a unpromontorio rocoso expuesto que seubica unos metros a la derecha de lahuella marcada, correspondiente alSNUPIE Nº 11. Desde aquí disfrutaráinteresantes panorámicas del glaciarO’Higgins y sus alrededores.

Una vez retomada la huella, ingresenuevamente al bosque, evitando salir deeste, o bordeándolo posteriormente ensu limite superior, hasta llegar a unaleve subida con huella bien marcada quelo conducirá al SNUPIE Nº 12, ubicadoen pequeña arista rocosa expuesta. Estees un sitio ideal para observar el glaciarO’Higgins, estos montes que lanzan unpoderoso hechizo sobre sus visitantes,aconsejamos asegurar una fotografía deaproximación a este bello cuerpo glacialy tomarse tiempo. Aquí es absolutamentenecesaria la contemplación del retrocesoglacial experimentado en el siglo pasado.

Continuando el recorrido desde elSNUPIE Nº 12, vemos que el paisajeva transformándose paulatinamente auna estepa alto andina, dejando atrás losbosques y dando espacio a que laserenidad se rompa con los constantes,fuertes y gélidos vientos que provienendirectamente de los sectores más altosd e l C a m p o d e H i e l o S u r .R e c o m e n d a m o s c o n s i d e r a respecialmente para este tramo llevarcomo vestimenta un cortaviento coninterior térmico para su mayorcomodidad y seguridad.

Tomando rumbo general suroestey siempre siguiendo la huella principal,deberá orientar su marcha a un pequeñocruce junto a una gran pared rocosa quees visible a una distancia superior a los500 metros. Continuing the tour fromSNUPIE Nr 12, we observe that thelandscape gradually becomes a highAndean steppe, leaving forest behindand breaking serenity with constant,strong and gelid winds comingdirectly from the highest sectors ofCampo de Hielo Sur. We recommendto specially consider in this sectorto wear a windbreak jacket withthermal interior for your bettercomfort and safety.

Taking general south-eastdirection and always following themain track, you should direct yourrun to a small crossing beside a largerocky wall which is visible at adistance higher than 500 meters.After passing this accident, considerthe crossing of small lagoons andthe beginning of a slight descent. Inthis sector, you should be careful,

since at about 300 meters aftercrossing said lagoons, it will benecessary to divert from the maintrack to the right, in order to haveaccess to the most west lagoon, nextto a scarp, where you could identifySNUPIE Nr. 13 in its shore, on a largerock.

SNUPIE Nr 13 is a uniquenatural mirador for the perspectivesof the O’Higgins Glacier front. Faceto face with the glacier and in one ofthe most sublime sights of nature, thecalm of the landscape is interruptedby the unknown clatter of the glacierpieces falling to the lake. The icevoice is heard, shaking us even withsmallest loosening.

After beginning with the touragain and leaving the O’HigginsGlacier front behind, take generaldirection 210º going round the edgeof scarp without visible track. Afterrunning more than 1.5 kilometersfrom SNUPIE Nr 13 you will find aplain sector, with pasturelands andabundant deep pools, just beforecrossing a small stream, reason whyyou should be extremely careful fornot getting wet.

Consider no more than 10minutes after this stream to reachSNUPIE Nr 14 on a large rocklocated next to a small pool, it is anexcellent mirador of the glacier andthe GAEA cord. In this sector, theterrace edge is exposed, it is advisableto keep a prudent distance.

It is also important to considerthat the following 7 kilometers fromSNUPIE Nr 14, correspond to anaccess ascent to “Alto de los Líquenes”mountain pass, which name is due tothe abundance of this vegetation. Itis mostly rocky lands of periglacialenvironment, where there is no track,demanding us to double safetymeasures and the attention toindications. You should note that thenext camp is between 3 and 4 nexthours.

If weather conditions are notparticularly good, consider theconvenience to continue with the tour.Remember to periodically check yourbarometer and to consider an

Se escucha la voz del hielo,que aún en los más pequeñosdesprendimientos, estremece.

Reiniciado el recorrido y dejandoatrás el frente del glaciar O’Higgins, tomerumbo general 210º bordeando el escarpesin huella visible. Luego de andar pormás de 1,5 kilómetros desde el SNUPIENº 13 se topará con un sector de vegas,con pastizales y abundantes pozonesprofundos, justo antes de cruzar unpequeño estero, por lo que debe tenermáxima precaución para no mojarse.

Considere no más de 10 minutosdespués de este estero para llegar alSNUPIE Nº 14 sobre una gran roca quese encuentra vecina a una pequeña poza,es un excelente mirador del glaciar ycordón GAEA. En este sector, el bordede la terraza se encuentra expuesto,recomendamos mantener una distanciaprudente.

Es importante que considere que los7 kilómetros siguientes desde el SNUPIENº 14, corresponden a una subida deacceso al portezuelo “Alto de los Líquenes”denominado así por la abundancia de estavegetación. En su mayoría son terrenosrocosos de ambiente periglacial, dondeno existe ningún tipo de huella, lo queobliga a extremar las medidas deseguridad y atención a las indicaciones.Tenga presente que el próximocampamento se encuentra entre 3 y 4horas más.

Si las condiciones meteorológicasno son del todo buenas, evalúe laconveniencia de seguir el recorrido.Recuerde periódicamente chequear subarómetro y considerar una oportunaespera en el campamento I.

Desde el SNUPIE Nº 14 tomerumbo general 75º, cruzará a unos 800metros un pequeño portezuelo, donde

podrá observar una pirca de rocas,desde donde debe subir directamentela ladera por unos 150 metros hastallegar a cruzar un arroyo. Tome luegosu derecha y continúe, que a pocoandar llegará a cruzar nuevamente elarroyo. Desde aquí, remonte unos 500metros rumbo sur para luego tomarcomo referencia el portezuelo que leindicará el cruce del cordón. Es unterreno complejo para guiarse debidoa la existencia de abundante roca, porlo que se hace necesario el apoyo demapa e idealmente un GPS.

Al final de la subida, usted seenfrentará al SNUPIE Nº 15, queindicará la llegada al portezuelo “Altode Los Líquenes”, desde donde podráiniciar el descenso al otro lado de lamontaña. Dicho descenso se realizapor un sector rocoso, siendoaproximadamente 300 metros con 40ºde pendiente hasta llegar al fondo deun antiguo circo glacial, formaciónpropia de erosión alto andina. Paraq u i e n e s v i e n e n a c a b a l l o ,recomendamos bajar desmontados.

Durante los próximos doskilómetros se estará aproximando ala laguna visualizada a la distancia.Bordéela por su ribera nororientalhasta llegar a su desagüe. Desde allísolo le restarán unos 400 metros parallegar al SNUPIE Nº 16, ubicadosobre un umbral rocoso, que indicael inicio de una nueva bajada, dandopaso pronto a los bosques del lagoChico.

Ya al ingresar al bosque, valleabajo, deberá tomar su izquierda poruna huella marcada, considerando queen menos de 20 minutos de marchadesde el SNUPIE Nº 16, seránecesario cruzar el estero de suderecha. Desde allí siga cercano susriberas.

Tenga cuidado al separarse delestero, la huella se pierde en estesector por lo que procure no alejarsedemasiado de este. Siga su ribera suren terrenos planos y con abundantebosque, hasta llegar al SNUPIE N°17, correspondiente al CampamentoII. Es un sitio perfecto para una paradamas prolongada, a orillas del esteroy bien protegido de los vientos, en unbello bosque de Lengas.

Be careful when leaving the stream,the track is lost in this sector reasonwhy you should try to not get too faraway from it. Follow its south riversidein plain lands and with abundant forestsuntil reaching SNUPIE Nr 17 ,corresponding to Camp II. It is a perfectplace for a longer break, at the streamshore and well protected from winds ina beautiful wood of Lengas.

Este SNUPIE se ubica en unpromontorio rocoso esculpido por loshielos que sirve como mirador natural,a pocos metros al oriente y visualmenteidentificable del anterior SNUPIE.Tenga la precaución de no exponersedemasiado si los vientos golpean confuerza.

Desde el SNUPIE N° 19, retomela huella y siga siempre ladera abajo(rumbo noreste), bordeando en partesel estero y escuchando el sonar de aguasa su izquierda. Si llega en un momentoa perder la huella, procure tomar comorumbo de referencia el lago O’Higgins,

En 1965, un incidente, queterminó con la muerte del teniente deCarabineros Hernán Merino Correa enel sector de Laguna del Desierto, hizoque el Estado chileno decidiera reforzarla soberanía en la zona. Se funda VillaO'Higgins, hoy día cabecera comunal,que alberga a más de 300 personas.

A fines de la década pasada, seavanzó en la integración de esta zonaremota, con la construcción del caminoque une a Villa O’Higgins con el útlimovértice de la carretera austral, en el surde la región de Aysén. Desde lacolonización pionera hasta entonces,los pobladores demoraban siete o másdías de a caballo hasta la localidad deCochrane y sólo podían disponer deun esporádico vuelo en aeroplano.

Expediciones del siglo xx.Hubo muchas razones para

emprender una travesía por estosparajes tan desolados y de una inmensabelleza y misterio; motivos científicos,aventureros y razones geopolíticas,movilizaron a chilenos, alemanes,italianos, franceses, argentinos,británicos, australianos, japoneses y

Expeditions of the xxthcentury

There were many reasons toundertake a journey by such a wastedplace, which was at the same timetremendously beautiful and mysterious.Reasons, such as, science, adventure,geography and politics mobilized peoplefrom Chile, Germany, Italy, France,Argentina, the United Kingdom,

Algunos de estos exploradoresfueron: el doctor Federico Reichtertque emprendió travesías en el año1914 y más tarde en 1933, el PadreAlberto María de Agostini que viajóen el año 1928, Agusto Grosse quese internó en estas tierras en 1944 yEric Schipton que viajó en los veranosde los años 1958, 59, 60 y 61.

¿Quién fueCandelario Mansilla?

Es el nombre del lugar en dondeparte la Ruta, en honor a uno de losprimeros colonos chilenos que seinstalaron con sus familias en el sectornororiental del Campo de Hielo Sur,a partir de 1920. Junto a José Saavedra,Candelario Mansilla trabajó ydesarrolló los campos con fuerteímpetu pionero adquiriendo algunastierras, propiedad de colonosextranjeros. Muchos de susdescendientes emigraron a lugaresmás poblados y con mejor clima. Sinembargo, este proceso se ha idorevirtiendo con el tiempo y con laconstrucción del camino que unePuerto Yungay y Villa O’Higgins.

Who was CandelarioMansilla?

This is the name of the placewhere the Road starts, in the memoryof one of the first Chilean colonistswho settled with their families in thenorth-east sector of Southern Ice Field,since 1920. Together with JoséSaavedra, Candelario Mansilla workedand developed the fields with a strongpioneer energy, acquiring some landsthat belonged to foreign settlers. Manyof his descendants emigrated to morepopulated places, with a better climate.This process, however, has reverted intime thanks to the construction of theroad that links Puerto Yungay and VillaO’Higgins.
