WILLIAM O. SMITH/BILL SMITH

William Overton Smith began playing the clari-net at the age of 10. In his teens, he initiated the dual life he has lived ever since. As William O. Smith, he’s an acclaimed and influential in-novator in ‘new’ or ‘contemporary’ music, pio-neering the use of extended techniques on the clarinet and incorporating them into his more than 200 compositions. In his other persona as Bill Smith, he is a giant in the world of jazz, having made over a dozen recordings with art-ists such as Red Norvo, Shelley Mann, and Dave Brubeck. Eric Salzman wrote of him in 1964: “William Smith’s clarinet pieces, played by him-self, must be heard to believe – double, even triple stops; pure whistling harmonics; trem-olo growls and burbles; ghosts of tones, shrill screams of sounds, weird echoes, whispers and clarinet twitches; the thinnest of thin, pure lines; then veritable avalanches of bubbling burbling sound. Completely impossible except that it happened.”

ALLOY ORCHESTRA“The best in the world at accompanying silent films.” Roger Ebert

Alloy Orchestra is a three man musical ensem-ble that writes and performs live accompani-ment to classic silent films. Their performance on Outside The Box accompanies a newly re-stored print of the classic 1927 futuristic Ger-man film METROPOLIS, by Fritz Lang. Work-ing with an outrageous assemblage of found percussion and state-of-the-art electronics, the group generates music in a spectacular variety of styles. They can conjure up a French sym-phony or a simple German bar band of the 20’s; they can make the audience think it is being attacked by tigers, contacted by radio signals from Mars or swept up in the Russian Revolu-tion. Alloy has helped revive some of the great film masterpieces of the silent era, performing at prestigious film festivals and cultural centers in the US and abroad such as The Telluride Film Festival, The Roger Ebert Film Festival, Lincoln Center and The Louvre.

JEFFREY GAVETTJeffrey Gavett, baritone, is dedicated to the

creation and presen-tation of new music as composer, per-former and improvis-er. He has performed with a wide array of artists, ranging from the Rolling Stones and indie rock group

Clogs to new music groups Ensemble de Sade, ICE, SEM Ensemble, Signal, Talea Ensemble, and Wet Ink Ensemble. He is director of the new music vocal ensemble Ekmeles, praised for its “extraordinary sense of pitch” by the New York Times. His mixed ensemble loadbang has premiered more than 50 new works in the past five years, working closely with such compos-ers as Nick Didkovsky, Somei Satoh, Steven Ta-kasugi, David Lang, and Terry Riley, performing the music of the latter two at the 2008 Bang on a Can Summer festival, where he was a fellow. He holds degrees from Westminster Choir Col-lege and Manhattan School of Music.

FRANK FERKOHailed by critics as a master of text setting and composing for a cappella vocal ensem-bles, Frank Ferko is one of the most sought af-ter composers of new

choral music today. From 2001 to 2003 Mr. Ferko was Composer-in-Residence with the Dale Warland Singers, long regarded as one of America’s finest a cappella choirs. His works have been performed by choral ensembles such as the BBC Singers, Trinity College Choir, Volti, Cantori and Conspirare, as well as dis-tinguished solo artists Nathan Gunn, Robert Orth, Sylvia McNair, and Nancy Gustafson. Mr. Ferko’s two extended compositions based on Hildegard von Bingen - the Hildegard Organ Cycle and the Hildegard Motets - have gained international attention, and his articles about the music of Hildegard have appeared in the British music journal Choir & Organ. He is also a scholar of the music of Olivier Messiaen, having lectured on Messiaen’s organ music and per-formed many of Messiaen’s works in concert.

GEORGE FLYNNGeorge Flynn has com-posed about 150 works in all media, including over six hours of mu-sic for piano solo, and has recorded for Turn-about, ATCO, Finnadar,

BIS, Wounded Bird and Southport records. A recent performance of Flynn’s solo piano piece Pieces of Night (Tanglewood Festival of Con-temporary Music, 2011) was described by the Boston Globe as “a furiously virtuosic, brilliant-ly chiseled 50-minute monument to Vietnam-era insomnia”. Fredrik Ullén’s BIS recording of Flynn’s 114-minute piano solo, Trinity, was released in 2007 with the entire score (154 pag-es) included (pdf format) on the second disk. Based in Chicago, George Flynn chaired Musi-cianship and Composition at DePaul University (Chicago) for 25 years, and continues to direct DePaul’s professional contemporary perfor-mance series, “New Music DePaul” as well as Chicago’s “New Music at the Green Mill” se-ries. He received his academic degrees from Columbia University in New York City.

SEVER TIPEI Sevier Tipei was born in Bucharest, Roma-nia, immigrated to the United States in 1972 and became a U.S. citi-zen in 1978. He holds degrees in composi-tion from the Univer-sity of Michigan and

in piano performance from the Bucharest Con-servatory. Tipei has been teaching since 1978 at the University of Illinois School of Music where he manages the Computer Music Project of the UIUC Experimental Music Studios; he was also a visiting scientist at the Argonne National Laboratory between 1993 and 2003. MP1, his program for computer-assisted composition, was the first such program to be implemented on a supercomputer (NCSA ‘s CRAY X-MP) in 1986. In collaboration with Hans Kaper, Senior Mathematician at Argonne, Tipei is developing an Environment for Music Composition (EMC), which includes software for composition, sound synthesis, automatic music notation, and visual-ization of music in a virtual environment.

LAWRENCE AXELROD Lawrence Axelrod is a composer, pianist and conductor whose musical activities have taken him around the United States and the world. He has present-

ed concerts in Germany, Sweden, Cuba and South Africa. His compositions have been programmed on festival concerts around the United States, performed by ensembles such as Pinotage, The Lincoln Trio, The Duo Ahlert/Schwab, the Ensemble JungeMusik Berlin and The Verdi String Quartet. Cas-sandra Speaks, for orchestra and tape, was premiered by the San Jose Symphony (CA) in June of 1999. Mr. Axelrod has received grants from Chorus America, Meet the Composer and Arts International, and has released three CD recordings that feature his works. Mr. Axelrod is a founder and past chairperson of the Chicago Composers’ Con-sortium, as well as a member of CUBE.
