Rarely has a production of Verdi’s “Otello” taken place in such a prestigious location: the courtyard of the Palazzo Ducale in Venice. Directed by Francesco Micheli, this special outdoors “event production” of the Gran Teatro La Fenice supports the claim that “Venice is asserting itself more than ever on a global scale as one of the great capitals of music” (GB Opera).
After “Macbeth” and just before “Falstaff,” “Otello” brought Verdi and Shakespeare together once again in a dramatic tale of diversity and passion, of blind love and undying hatred – a fateful encounter of opposing views on life and morals.
Micheli’s staging takes place amidst genuine late-Gothic and Renaissance architecture, “a set of singular fascination” (Il Corriere Musicale) that is highlighted by shifting various projections of, for example, signs of the zodiac which symbolize the various protagonists. Another authentic Venetian touch is the use of “acqua alta” gangways as a secondary stage element that hints at the ever-present possibility of losing one’s footing and falling – which is what ultimately befalls Otello.
Critics were full of praise for the musical performance, which was called “extraordinary, without any reservations” (OperaClick). Conductor Myung-Whun Chung was seen as the “absolutely dominating force” of the performance (GB Opera).
The lead role is sung by Gregory Kunde, who successfully interpreted both Verdi’s and Rossini’s Otello in one year, perhaps the first tenor ever to do so. He “reproduces every accent, every color demanded by Verdi with sensibility and intelligence” (OperaClick) and proves that he is a masterful Verdian singer. On a par with the lead role is Carmela Remigio as Desdemona, who stands out for her elegance and supple voice, and Lucio Gallo as a refreshingly subtle and restrained Iago.
