feel really excited about this year’s festival which I am sure will be a fantastic event. We have staged it a little earlier this time so we don’t clash with Wimbledon or Glastonbury Rock Festival. Also as it invariably rains at

that time of the year we hope that in 2015 we will catch the good weather! We have reintroduce the Parade in Wood Street following popular demand for its return!

Popular events like the Pop Concert in the Bowl, Town Gardens and the Commonweal Performing Arts Marquee, Dog Show, Fairground Rides and stalls at the Lawn will also be staged, but there will be a number of new events for you all to enjoy including the Health & Fitness Zone and a Climbing Wall staged by the Scouts.

The committee is a very strong team of volunteers who are committed to the festival and without them the festival simply wouldn’t happen! Thank you one and all for your services to the community, you are unsung heroes! Thank you also to our Patron Sheila Harrod for her continued support which is very much appreciated by us all.

We are pleased to be supporting this year’s festival charity which is Brighter Futures I am sure you will agree that this local charity helps many people in Swindon, so please give generously when you see the bucket collectors come your way as every little helps.

In my capacity as Community Arts Development and Press Liaison Officer at Commonweal I feel I have got a lot to bring to the festival. I have over ten years’ experience in Commonweal organising events and leading teams both in school and in the wider community. Thank you to Headteacher Keith Defter for seconding me and thus enabling me to be free to stand as Chair.

Bring on the sunshine!

Although our appeal has yet to be launched publicly, please find below some information about how the funds raised from The Old Town Festival will help make a difference to local people with a cancer diagnosis in Swindon and Wiltshire.

Each year hundreds of patients travel an average of 2,500 miles to receive essential Radiotherapy treatment. At one of the most vulnerable times in their lives they make this journey away from their support networks. We need to raise £3 million in order to equip a Radiotherapy facility in Swindon. Why support us? For too long local people in need of radiotherapy have had to make the long journey to Oxford for treatment. Typically this means up to 40 trips to Oxford over the course of one to seven weeks. Not only does this mean patients having to endure long journeys at a time when they are unwell, it also means spending precious time travelling, rather than with loved ones. Every day, eight people are told the devastating news that they have cancer. In 2013, 669 patients from Swindon travelled to Oxford University Hospital to receive radiotherapy. This equates to 10,043 journeys of 70 miles. This is our once in a lifetime chance to support the biggest improvement in cancer care Swindon has seen in a generation. Brighter Futures, the charity for Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, are running an appeal in order to provide the equipment needed for a new Radiotherapy Centre at the Great Western Hospital site in Swindon. This is a partnership with Oxford University Hospital who will build the facility at a cost of £14 million.

Your donation will be used to purchase the equipment required to provide local people with radiotherapy in Swindon. To find out more about Brighter Futures and how you can get more involved in the Radiotherapy appeal, please contact us on 01793 605631 or email [email protected] Please note:In the event of the Radiotherapy appeal not proceeding and/or the target being exceeded, all funds raised will be used in the provision of Cancer Services at Great Western Hospital

Old Town Festival Launch Night @ The Commonweal School

Friday 8th May

Plans are full steam ahead for this years Old Town Festival, 6 – 14th June, which promises to be a fantastic week of events for people of all ages. On Friday 8th May the festival brochure is launched. This is being produced by the excellent local company and the festival’s major business partner Screaming Media. The festival’s major community partner The Commonweal School are hosting the launch at the school from 6pm where the local press will be invited to attend. The programme will be distributed at selected venues shortly after this date.

To celebrate the launch a Bollywood Theme Night al has been arranged by two members of the committee, Jennifer Stevenson, Music Co-ordinator and Heather Matthews, Vice Chair.

“The Bollywood themed evening is on the same night as the press launch, but at the slightly later time of 7pm. All are welcome to join us for an evening of fun which includes performances of Bollywood dance, a henna painter, raffle, disco dancing and a licensed bar. We are very lucky to have the curries donated by the Taj Mahal from Shaw, West Swindon,” said Heather.

Tickets for the event, including curry, are £10 each and can be booked via www.swindontickets.co.uk or by tel: 0844 8221737, or by popping into the shop, Creative Kabin, 28 Morley Street, Swindon. It will be a fantastic night’s entertainment and a superb way to thank our sponsors and celebrate with local residents and their friends and family.

The festival relies heavily on the time and goodwill of the committee who are a committed and friendly group of people who go that extra mile for the community.

“The idea for the Bollywood night came from when Heather and I were having a meal at the Jewel in the Crown and we asked Mr Ali’s son-in-law if they would like to be involved in this year’s OTF. He told us about a very worthwhile charity the Radiotherapy Appeal for Swindon which would mean that Swindon people would not have to travel to Oxford for treatment. Heather liked the idea of this charity and it won the committee vote when we were looking at a charity to support this year.”

“I have been involved with the music business all my life and was asked to joined the Committee 6 years ago. It’s good fun and nice to put on entertainment for the people of Swindon. Heather is a friend of mine and had helped out in previous years. Heather decided to join our committee last year, and was voted in as vice chair,” said Jenny.

Please check out our Facebook page and website www.oldtownfestival.co.uk for up to date info on this year’s festival.

Josie Williams, Festival Chair.

Old Town Festival Open Gardens 14 June 2015

raising much needed funds for charity

WILL YOU OPEN YOUR GARDEN?

For more info or to get involved phone Mutsai on 01793 322184 or email [email protected]

Calling all keen Old Town gardeners….

Help us make Old Town Festival 2015 special by joining in as an open garden.

We are looking for gardens in Old Town, willing to open to visitors on Sunday 14th June 2015, our festival Open Gardens Day.

Open Gardens are a rewarding way to share your passion and hard work while raising much-needed funds for charity.

Your garden can be big or small, exotic, charming or formal – it doesn’t matter, we love them all and our visitors love variety.

.

If you are able to support Old Town Festival by opening your garden, please let us know. We’d love to hear from you.

Or, if would like to donate cakes and plants to be sold during our Open Garden day then please get in touch with us too.

Proceeds will benefit the Radiotherapy Appeal at Great Western Hospital and ZHEST, a small charity supporting rural communities in Zimbabwe.

Swindon Mobility Fayre 2015Saturday 27th June, 10.00am to 3.00pm

The Legends Lounge, The County Ground, County Road, Swindon, SN1 2ED

The aim of the event is to raise awareness of the resources that are available throughout the Borough to make life easier for people of all ages and abilities, this is our third year of the event and we had an excellent comment last year giving us hope that we are near to achieving our aim.

…… I had anticipated one or two stalls so

was utterly amazed to be warmly welcomed

by an in depth, informative team of

dedicated people whose caring and

commitment was expressed at every

stall ………… I sincerely hope this

informative and well organised event,

which covers every aspect of emotional,

mental, physical, mobility and safety issues

will continue to reach out across the age

span so that everyone is made aware of

the tremendous help that is available for

us all in unforeseen situations
