In August 2008, Edinburgh Palette

successfully negotiated for several floors of

St Margaret’s House – a vacant, ex-office

building. By spring 2010, Edinburgh Palette

had leased all the remaining floors of St

Margaret’s House and filled all 200 studios

with budding artists, crafters and

community organisations.

Today, Edinburgh Palette remains 100%

occupied with a waiting list for space. It

also houses community arts spaces, a

theatre, rehearsal spaces, a cinema room,

printmaking studio, ceramics studio & kilns,

recording studio, martial arts dojo, library,

swap shop, meeting rooms and more than

11000ft2 of gallery space.

• The Moffat Charitable Trust purchased and refurbished the first two studios for the Trust, currently eight studios, a contemporary exhibition gallery and a gift shop operate from the town.

• Deveron Arts is a contemporary arts organisation based in Huntly, a market town in the north east of Scotland with a population of 4,500.

• Deveron Arts has no building, instead the town is the venue; acting as studio, gallery and stage for artists of all disciplines invited from around the world to live and work here. For this they use spaces throughout the town and its surrounding areas: supermarkets, churches, garages, bothies to name just a few.

Arts as the foundation or part of the whole

• This guide covers the basics to consider when designing your community space to be able to run cinema, theatre, exhibitions etc.

• We have included information on licenses and technical considerations.

• We have mined for case studies covering community cinema, eventing and arts centres.

• We hope you will find links to everything else you need.

Getting the context right

• The Orkney Folk Festival and Leitham Nights are 2 very different and hugely successful events, bringing people and money in to their communities.

• The rise in community cinemas (film clubs) gives opportunities to come together and a chance to promote local services and sell some food and drink.

• All successful creative ventures are based on good research on that core community action principle –what does my community want/need creatively and culturally?
