But you may be surprised to learn a couple of staple Nova Scotia brands named after a location no longer call that spot home. Big Tancook Island lies in Mahone Bay and used to be a major producer of sauerkraut. Along with Little Tancook, the islands can only be accessed by ferry via Chester. The fermented cabbage delight was made on the Big Island and sold across the Maritimes until production was shifted to Lunenburg in the 1970s. Likewise, Tatamagouche Butter is no longer made in Tatamagouche on the Northumberland Straight. The Creamery was originally founded in 1925. Scotsburn Dairy bought the operation in 1968, relocating production in 1992.
