Other Indicators of Living Standard and Economic Development A.) PQLI – Physical Quality of Life Index B.) HDI – Human Development Index This index came out of the work of Amartya. It is a measurement of development which is the average achievement of a country in terms of basic human capabilities. It is a composite index of health, education and standard of living. It measures if people in society are able to live a healthy life. Be educated and have a good standard of living. It is used to compare countries. Heath (life expectancy) 2/3 weight Education (adult literacy/school enrollment) 1/3 weight Decent standard of living (income measurement which is adjusted for international comparability) The HDI can be adjusted for gender, age, geographic region and ethnicity. C.) HPI – Human Poverty Index This focuses solely on the poor. It attempts to track the progress of the poor in terms of the degree of deprivation. It considers 3 factors; 1) The proportion of people who die before 40 2) Illiteracy 3) Economic provisioning – it is a composite of proportion of people with access to safe water, health services and malnourished children under age 5. The lower the value of this index the better off the country is.
