Objective

• I can evaluate the four main reformers of the Reformation!

• 7.55 Outline the reasons for the growing discontent with the Catholic Church, including the main ideas of Martin Luther (salvation by faith), John Calvin (predestination), Desiderius Erasmus (free will), and William Tyndale (translating the Bible into English), and their attempts to reconcile what they viewed as God’s word with Church action.

John Calvin

• Calvin taught predestination. This was the idea that God knew who would be saved even before they were born. Nothing that people did during their life would change God’s plan. He thought it was important to live a good life and obey God’s laws.

• In 1542 Geneva, Switzerland made Calvin their religious and political leader.

William Tyndale• Very educated - went to Oxford and Cambridge

University. • 1523, Tyndale moved to London with the

intention of translating the New Testament into English, an act that was strictly forbidden. He passionately believed that the Bible should determine the practice and doctrine of the Church and that people should be able to read the Bible in their own language.

Desiderius Erasmus • Dutch humanist and Catholic priest. Believed

in free will and wrote about it. He wanted people to have better understanding of one another. Did not agree with everything Martin Luther said but did believe in the Protestant Reformation

• Criticized church rituals stating they did not focus on teachings of Jesus or devotion to God

Reform• Create a unique and solid definition

Martin Luther• By the early 1500s scholars in northern Europe

were calling for church reforms. On October 31, 1517 a priest named Martin Luther added his voice to the call for reform.

Martin Luther • He nailed a list of complaints about the church

to the door of the church in Wittenberg in the German state of Saxony.

• This list is called the Ninety-Five-Thesis .• Due to the new printing press, copies of the

list spread throughout neighboring states!

Task 1• Each one of you will be assigned a specific

reformer to research. As you research highlight significant evidence.

• You will have 10 minutes to research your reformer.

• Create a 1-2 sentence summary of your reformer and what they did- you will use this in a bit, so it needs to a detailed and strong statement/s

Task 2: Collaboration • You will collaborate with your other group members.

You will teach one another about your reformer. How will you do this:

• Step 1: Create a character chart. Each person should have a section. You must tell the major actions of this reformer. Why was he significant?

• Step 2: The gist! Create a creative way (somewhere on the poster) of the gist of all four reformers. The ‘gist’ is the who, what , how, and why. The gist is a detailed summary of these 4 reformers!
