Student Learning ObjectivesUpon viewing the video and completing the enclosed student activities, students will be able to do the following:

This post assessment can be utilized as an assessment tool following student completion of the program and student activities. The results of this assessment can be compared against the results of the preliminary assessment to assess student progress.

This preliminary assessment is an assessment tool designed to gain an understanding of students’ preexisting knowledge. It can also be used as a benchmark upon which to assess student progress based on the objectives stated on the previous pages.

AssessmentWhat Do You Know Now? (p. 10):

Video Review (p. 12):

What Have You Learned? (p. 11):

The Video Review can be used as an assessment tool or as a student activity. There are two sections. The first part contains questions displayed during the program. The second part consists of a five-question video quiz to be answered at the end of the video.

• Explain that the fall season follows the summer season.• Understand that the days in fall get shorter and the weather gets cooler.• Explain that a frost occurs when the temperature gets below freezing.• Describe some of the changes plants undergo in fall. These changes include leaves turning brilliant colors then falling, as well as soft-stemmed plants having their growth stopped. Many plants also scatter seeds in the fall.• List some changes that animals go through in the fall season. Some animals migrate to places where it is easier for them to survive. Other animals begin looking for a place to hibernate, and some animals store food to eat.• Cite some ways people enjoy the fall season.• Explain that in fall the Earth’s northern hemisphere begins tilting away from the sun. This results in shorter days and generally cooler weather.

Introducing the Program

Program Viewing SuggestionsThe student master “Video Review” is provided (p. 12) for distribution to students. You may choose to have your students complete this Master while viewing the program or do so upon its conclusion.

The program is approximately 10 to 12 minutes in length and includes a five-question video quiz. Answers are not provided to the Video Quiz in the video, but are included in this guide on page 9. You may choose to grade student quizzes as an assessment tool or to review the answers in class.

The video is content-rich with numerous vocabulary words. For this reason you may want to periodically stop the video to review and discuss new terminology and concepts.

Before showing the video to students you may want to introduce some unfamiliar vocabulary words. Begin by asking them what time of year it is right now. They should say it is spring, summer, fall, or winter. Write these terms on the board. Then write the term “season” on the board. Explain that there are four seasons.

Tell students that the video they are going to see is about the fall season. Ask students to describe the weather in fall. Ask them what kinds of things happen with plants and animals in fall. And, ask them what things they like to do in fall. Tell students to pay close attention to the video to learn more about fall.

Video Script1. The weather on this day in late July is sunny and hot.2. The trees are green, and the flowers are in full bloom.3. But, in late October the weather is much cooler.4. The leaves on the trees have turned red, orange, and gold.5. Many flowers have produced seeds.6. This time of year is the fall season. It is also called autumn.7. The fall season follows the summer season.8. What’s the weather like in the fall?9. Why does the weather change?10. Why do trees turn beautiful colors in the fall?11. What animals migrate, or prepare to hibernate in the fall season?12. During the next few minutes we are going to answer these questions as we explore the beautiful season of fall.13.GraphicTransition–WhatHappensinFall?14. Some people say that fall is their favorite season.15. They like fall because they enjoy the scenery, fall activities, and the changing weather.16. YouCompare! Compare the weather on this day in early fall to the weather on this day in

late fall.17. The weather on this day in early fall is sunny and relatively warm.18. But, on this day in late fall it is chilly, rainy, and it may even snow.19. In fall the days continue to get shorter. The sun rises later and it sets earlier.20. The overall weather gets cooler.21. In some places it may get below freezing at night.22. This is called a frost. A fall frost sometimes kills flowers and vegetable plants.23.GraphicTransition–PlantsandAnimalsinFall24. A very special thing happens in New England in the fall. The leaves on the trees turn

brilliant colors.25. In fall, green leaves turn red, orange, and gold before dropping. Shorter days and cooler weather are thought to trigger this amazing color change.26. If you live in a place where the fall leaves don’t turn brilliant colors, you may still notice changes in plants as the days grow cooler and the amount of daylight decreases.27. In fall, soft-stemmed plants tend to stop growing. And, they often begin to look less green.28. Many develop mature seeds that are scattered by the wind.

Video Script29. Some plants also develop ripe fruit like these apple trees.30. Many animals also go through changes in fall.31. Some animals migrate to areas that are warmer and where food is easier to find.32. Migration is the process of animals moving to a place where it is easier for them to survive.33. These snow geese, for example, are in the process of migrating from the cooler arctic where they spend their summer, to a warmer place to spend the winter.34. Animals that do not migrate spend the fall season preparing for the cold winter season.35. Squirrels, for example, store nuts in places where they can find them in the winter.36. In the fall, other animals, such as bears, begin looking for a place tohibernate.37. Hibernation is a sleep-like state that some animals go through in the winter sheltered from the weather.38. These are just a few examples of changes that plants and animals go through in fall.39.GraphicTransition–PeopleinFall40. People enjoy fall in many different ways.41. Some like to hike in the cool fall weather…42. …while others enjoy picking apples.43. And, some enjoy raking leaves that have fallen from trees, then playing in leaf piles.44. Fall is an important time of year for farmers who harvest their crops that have been growing all summer.45. It is also a time when people work hard to get jobs done in preparation for winter.46.GraphicTransition–WhatCausesFall?47. As we have already mentioned, the weather in fall gets cooler and the amount of daylight

decreases. But, what causes this?48. The answer is in the movement of Earth around the sun.49. As you know, Earth has a general spherical shape.50. In space, Earth is tilted at an angle on an imaginary line called an axis.51. As Earth orbits around the sun during the course of a year its axis is always tilted in the same direction.52. During this point in the year the northern hemisphere is experiencing summer.53. But at the end of the summer and into fall, the position of Earth changes in relation to the sun.54. The Earth begins to tilt away from the sun.

Video Script55. As the Earth tilts away from the sun the northern hemisphere receives less sunlight, and the days get shorter. 56. YouDecide! What does this do to the overall temperature?57. The overall temperature in fall decreases and the weather gets cooler.58.GraphicTransition–VideoReview59. During the past few minutes we’ve had fun investigating some of the different features of the

fall season.60. We began by taking a look at how the weather in fall tends to be cooler than in summer. We also discussed the fact that the amount of daylight decreases.61. Some of the fascinating things that plants and animals do in fall were highlighted.62. We also discussed some of the interesting activities that people do in fall.63. Last, we explored how Earth’s position relative to the sun causes the fall season.64.GraphicTransition–VideoAssessmentFill in the correct word to complete the sentence.1. In fall the amount of daylight ___.2. A ___ occurs when the temperature gets below freezing.3. Many plants develop mature ____ in fall.4. These geese are _____ to a warmer place to spend the winter season.5. In fall Earth begins to tilt ____ from the sun.
