Have you been to Ottawa Street lately? Yes, that is how I started the last message to all of you but a lot has happened since then.Ottawa Street has a few more merchants opening with different arrays of products and services

to sell, Lanspeary Park has sponsored many events, the street had a little more beautification done to it, and our Gateway sign is getting an upgrade. We also are sponsoring some small events; you can find information about what in this issue.

We also had another flood hit the City of Windsor and we were reminded of it for three weeks seeing everyone’s personal belongings along the side of the road. There were some merchants on Ottawa Street that suffered the same fate, a flood in the basement. I mentioned before how strong this community is and I witnessed merchants clean up and continued their workweek without missing a beat. This resilience was also noticed throughout the neighbourhood with homeowners also cleaning up after the flood.

The courage to move forward is evident in everyone around Ottawa Street and I am glad to know strong people such as my neighbours.

So I ask you again, have you been to Ottawa Street lately? Here’s an open invitation to come and visit us where ‘great things are just around the corner’.

Dear Sergeant Edward Charles Samuel Wheeler,

Please allow me to introduce myself, I am Ottawa Street and I felt the need to write to you. I know of your sacrifice for your Country, our Country, from reading snippets of your correspondence with your beautiful wife Gwendolyne and your own Dear Mom & Dad. With Remembrance Day around the corner, I can’t help but think of everyone who sacrifices their lives in war time.

You see sir, although you never made it home to see your children Patsie, Carol and Faith grow into the fine adults they became, I did sir, right around the corner from me. It was a privilege and honour to know them as it is for me to know your grand-daughter who still attends my shops and restaurants to this very day.

You would be very proud to know the woman she is and to see your influence, through her mother, on how she comports herself.

I have been around for more than 100 years and my spirit, the very heart and soul of me, is made up of all who have touched me and called me home over the years. A tiny bit of all those beautiful souls have stayed to help show new generations the way.

You sir are one of those souls. Even though you only lived for 32 years, you were loved. You had courage and showed true bravery, I saw it in your letters. You selflessly assured your family to soothe their fears even though you had your own. You never let on the horrors you witnessed, through the air raids and combat, nor allowed the way they changed you to show your family. Your letters always comforted your family and you stated your love for them every time. You even added the phrase ‘Mizpah’ which I know means ‘Lord, watch over me’.

You see, what keeps me alive is the love and dedication my merchants and residents have for me. They never forgot to plant trees for me or dress me up in Holiday Cheer. They bring their friends and family to celebrate their lives with me and I am remembered fondly when stories are passed down the generations, as are you sir. I saw the admiration and respect paid you in the careful way your letters were lovingly cared for over the past 75 years and graciously shared with me. Though the pages are getting fragile from being read and re-read many times by many of your loved ones, they still show a glimpse of a life well lived and of great love.

I was touched by the poem you sent with your last letter and I want to share it with all those who read this letter, actually a song written by Guy Lombardo;

Bobbe Skuza & Ettore Bonato

Mrs. Gwendolyne Wheeler re-ceived a telegram from Ottawa on August 25, 1942, reporting that her husband, Sergeant Ed-ward Charles Samuel Wheeler, was missing in action. On February 5, 1943, Mrs. Gwen-dolyne Wheeler received another telegram reporting that Sergeant Edward Charles Samuel Wheeler was killed in action the nine-teenth of August, 1942. Gwen received a letter April 29, 1943, describing that on March 1, 1943, the body of her husband, Sergeant Edward Charles Samu-el Wheeler, washed up on shore near Boulogne, and was buried in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery, France, Plot XII, Row ‘E’, grave number 15.

In December, George Marar and Joe Sperduti, the owners of the highly popular Bourbon Tap & Grill, purchased the building where the New Tops of Windsor, a performance and event venue, once stood.

“We had a shutdown party – a Jim Beam takeover party, actually – and dressed the place up, catered it from the Bourbon, and let people know we now had possession of the space,” explains Marar. “We explained that we were looking to shut down for a few months, do some renovations, and breathe some new life into it.”

The plans for the new space are, at the time of this printing, top secret, but Marar’s spilling a few beans.

“I can tell you it’s going to be an event space, and we’ll be working with a company that’s supported us at the Bourbon since day one.

“We’ll be functioning like a hall. When word first started getting out that we bought (Tops), people asked, ‘Why would you want a bar near your bar?’ We would like to compliment our bar and Ottawa street with a new venue.”

Part of the vision, Marar says, is to host special events at the new venue – bridal showers, weddings, bachelor parties and the like – with after parties held at Bourbon. Concerts will also be held at the new place every few weeks; Marar is confident that musicians will be lining up to perform at the new one-of-a-kind entertainment centre.

Aesthetically, Marar and Sperduti, who have confirmed that Canadian Club will be the venue’s main brand, are imagining a “prohibition-era, vintage style… something that pays homage to the heritage of the building.

“It’s somewhat sentimental,” Marar continues. “It honours Ottawa St.’s hundred years of existence. We’re just such big fans of this street, and we feel that it’s an up-and-coming area. We’d like to do our part in helping to rejuvenate this city, and we feel like Ottawa’s uptown feel is distinctive, that we’re a destination point.

“We want people to come, visit, hang out to enjoy all business and amenities on Ottawa street and stay for a while.”

Tribal PrintingOver a decade ago, Mike Stannard and his

business partners owned one of several popular downtown bars, frequented by young adults with a penchant for music, entertainment – and promotional gear. As the owners of Taboo Bar & Grill, the eager young men realized how much exposure their venues would receive with their guests donning shirts with the bar name emblazoned across the front.

“We were spending a ton of money on

t-shirt giveaways,” remembers Stannard, “and (business partner) Matt (Komsa) also owned Voodoo and Rush, so we held a meeting and decided to buy a machine.

“We put it upstairs at Rush, and started

making our own promotional shirts, without having any of how big it was going to be.”

Word of mouth spread rapidly; other

bars wanted their own shirts made, as well as corporate and non-profit organizations. Within a year, Tribal Printing was born.

The business owners took the machine out

of Rush and opened a storefront on Ouellette, beside Voodoo. “Matt and Christian (Komsa) and I named it Tribal, to fit in with names Voodoo and Taboo,” Stannard explains. “It clicked.”

As the years passed, Stannard decided to

leave the bar business; he and his business partners amicably parted ways, and he became sole owner of Tribal Printing. After four years, he moved the business to Ottawa St.

Now celebrating its tenth year, the company

continues to service some of the city’s largest organizations and community events, including the Windsor Spitfires and CIBC Run for the Cure, and is proud to be a supporter of several minor sports teams, including Windsor Minor Football and Windsor Minor Hockey. Two years ago, Stannard also began a fashion line called Party Army, apparel geared toward university students and millennials, and is available online at party.army or at Tribal Printing.

“It’s been a great experience so far, and I

really just want to thank the customers, but also the team at Tribal,” says Stannard. “One of our employees, Dave Piche, has been there since day one – he was literally printing shirts upstairs at Rush. He’s been with us ever since.

“I think that’s why we’re so successful. We’re

a family business. We’re family at the shop and we treat customers like family.”
