Module Title FINAL MAJOR PROJECT

FINAL MAJOR PROJECT STATEMENT OF INTENT

Name: Niall Cruickshank-Sutton Blog Address: n-cruickshank1013fmp.blogspot.co.uk Rationale I wish to focus primarily on editorial layout design, branding and specialist printing and book craft, to create a significant body of work. I am driven by a passion for making a significant change through ethical design practice. I want to create work I am happy with, but is also considered, precise and maintains integrity. My goal for the FMP is to have a comprehensive body of quality work ranging the different disciplines I am interested in and base my practice around. I want to challenge my abilities and create work to a professional standard exploring print traditional and commercial. I would also like to explore a range of branding for different clients I feel this is a major focus of who I want to be as a designer and the work I want to produce. As well as the previous I would like to work within areas that I enjoy and excite me to produce creative out comes to specific problems. Areas such as music, space exploration, history and technology. I feel the creative challenges I have set my self can be answered thoroughly by the briefs I have chosen and the clients I will be working with. Subjects / Themes GENERAL THEMES: The subjects and my areas of interest will help build the foundations of my briefs, this will keep them engaging and interesting for me and will hopefully will relay who I am as a designer through my personal interest, the general themes that I want to explore within my practice are as follows; Environment, Interaction, Technology, History, Collaboration, Music, Media, Film, Space Travel,

SPECIFIC SUBJECTS: Specific aspects of the briefs I have chosen allow me to explore subjects I enjoy and also subjects I would like to learn more about, the following subjects are what I will build on to create a comprehensive body of work for my FMP, portfolio and design context; Album art & composition, Space Travel, Modernism, Futurists, Human Interaction, Photography, Distribution, Publicity. Design Disciplines / Creative Development As a designer I conceder myself be heavily influenced by print and therefore focus my work on print as a discipline, through print I would like to explore in some detail the following areas of design; Publication Design, Layout and Grid Design, Traditional Printing Processes, Screen Printing, Branding, Sustainable Design. Although my practice is mainly based around print, I would like my work to reflect I have the ability to produce a wide range of work that may include screen/web based graphics, I feel this is achievable by extensively answering the briefs I have set and exploring all options which may include these disciplines where appropriate. Practical Skills / Workshops – what, why and when? Throughout my FMP I feel it will be get them to a very high level, after graduation the facilities at my disposal will be severely diminished but the knowledge I can take from them while I am here is invaluable. Additionally the briefs I have chosen give me an opportunity to develop and implement new skills. The practical skills and workshops I will be taking through my FMP are as follows; Screen Printing, this is something I am not only interested in but through that forms the basis of one of my briefs. Book Binding, again this is a crafting skill that is an interest but heavily influences my design, the skills learnt can directly be related to briefs I am undertaking and the understanding of the skill will help designing for publications. Designing for large scale/commercial print is a skill I have little experience with but through several of my briefs will be explored further and much more comprehensively. Digital Print, for either test prints or final mocking ups digital print and understanding how to get the best results when printing is important to all of my briefs, therefore will be a workshop utilised a great deal within FMP.
