Welcome to our latest publication of In the Loop, your one stop
brochure for information and guidance on a whole host of activities and events coordi-nated by the Council’s, Services to our Community Team. If you are involved with a local business, please take some time to review the vocational training opportunities on offer over the next couple of months, including Food Safety and First Aid Training. Don’t forget that early March also sees the return of Scilly Busi-ness Week. This is the second year that Lifelong Learning and the Island Partnership have worked together to offer an exciting series of short workshops aimed at develop-ing your business skills. Further information about the programme content, times and venues can be found on our website at www.scilly.gov.uk Over the past few weeks you may have noticed an increase in activities being offered through Active Scilly. In this edition of In the Loop you can read about the success of our Council sponsored Zumba instructor Emma Hutchins and find out more about the new Aqua-Fit and Aerobics sessions. The cost of attending some of these sessions as well as using the swimming pool and gym has also had a bit of a revamp so please pop in and enquire about Bronze, Silver and Gold membership packages. We want to make participation as attractive as possible so feel free to call, email or speak with a member of staff. The contact details you’ll need are on the back page.

Carn Gwaval Campus Travel Group
The Carn Gwaval Campus travel group are interested in collecting information about your experience travelling to school and the potential demand for a home to school
travel service. This will not be a statutory service within the remit of the Education Act (1996) and as such is beyond the management and accountability of the Local Authority or the Five

Zumba Comes to Scilly!! It all started with Active Scilly’s taster weekend of Zumba! I attended two of the three classes, there was such a great atmosphere & everyone felt so good afterwards that I was then convinced that Zumba is the best way to keep fit while still having fun! A few months later a council community grant became available, I thought it was a great opportunity to train to become a Zumba instructor! I put my application in and was thrilled when I got the funding I needed. I went to London to train in September and started classes just after Christmas when I thought everyone would be determined and full of enthusiasm to get back into shape. When I originally booked the sports hall I was anticipating 15-20 people would turn up ….I would never have thought in a million years I would end up with 67 people on my first session!!!!!! Zumba is a great activity for Scilly, it gets people moving & keeping fit in an enjoyable way, we literally dance for an hour and have so much fun! I am really enjoying the classes and looking to the future I have exciting plans for Zumba kids and junior sessions. So watch this space!!! The Islands' Partnership, with the assistance of the Council of the Isles of Scilly’s Lifelong Learning team, is once again to host a week of bespoke support for all business owners, sole traders and entrepreneurs living and working across the islands.
Scilly Business Week 2016 takes place from Monday 7th March to Friday 11th March and has been designed to help island businesses make more money by gaining a better understanding of, and more confidence in, delivering a service or selling a product that is both highly sustainable and more profitable.
The sessions in place for 2016 reflect feedback and requests for certain topics to be included. This year will also include a Business Breakfast networking event on the first morning at The Mermaid.
Sessions will include how to harness and make the most of business opportunities around Scilly’s new events programme; provide the latest information and updates from Google and Social Media (Facebook for Business etc); offer top tips for webhosting and web security; how best to work with journalists and how to get your product photography right.
Representatives will also attend from the Cornwall & Isles of Scilly Growth Hub and Council of the Isles of Scilly to inform island-based businesses about the new £2.25 million Voucher Scheme fund to be launched which will enable them to seek funding for further growth.

The start of a new event and the start of many new lives!
The Children’s Centre based in the old school at Carn Thomas prides itself on offering events and activities to support families in raising their children. As part of the monthly calendar we offer ante-natal sessions, Health Visitor Weigh in sessions for babies, all sorts of arts ‘n’ crafts sessions, many energetic and lively play sessions and NEW to our monthly offer is our group for under 1’s, which has a different theme each month. To get the new year off to a great start, the islands have been blessed with 5 new babies, so that’s 5 new little ones who we are looking forward to getting to know and supporting them through their learning and development. On Monday 25th January, 3 of the islands new babies and their mummies, along with some slightly older ones attended the first “Mini-Footprints, Floor play and Tummy Time session.” An incredible morning was had, new friendships began, parents had the opportunity to chat about their experiences and to gain peer support from one another and some of the most precious creations were made as the little one’s made keepsake footprints to take home. Our new addition to the calendar hopes to encourage new

families to come along to the Children’s Centre, meet the
team, make new friends, feel supported, and to act as a
starting point to their Children’s Centre journey, which we
promise will be filled with lots of fun filled memories.
