God’s First Question

Entering into an new year, many of us wonder what 2016 will bring. We usually attempt to make resolutions to better our families, our communities, or ourselves. What great resolutions to have in light of the many disheartening events in our world today! However, I think we all still have questions ...for God, and each other.

After the shootings in San Bernardino, California—the cover of the New York Daily News reads, “God

Isn’t Fixing This.” Inevitably and unfortunately, we will all encounter tragedies and when we do, we turn heavenward and ask the question of God – “Where are you?” or,“ Why did you let this happen?” We ask a lot of questions of and about God, but have you ever wondered what God would ask back?

In Genesis 3, we find the familiar story of Adam and Eve involved in humanities’ first sinful act, disobeying God’s command and eating from the tree of knowledge. In that same chapter, verses 8-9, it states, “They heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden at the time of the evening breeze, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man, and said to him, “Where are

you?” Isn’t it interesting to see that the same question we find ourselves asking of God is the first recorded question he asks of us – “Where are you?”

Humanity had hidden itself from God so much that he had no choice but to reveal himself to us by becoming one of us — living, breathing, dying, and showing us the Way. Not just the way of salvation, but also a way of life — how he wants us to be His presence in the world by following and modeling Jesus’ example. Let us make an effort in 2016 to live into that incarnation daily by being God’s presence wherever we are. How would you respond if God asks you “Where are you?” Would you hide in shame — or does your life show and display how God is alive and working amongst us because we are His people?  n
