Worship Service Schedule As I write this, it’s early March and

many of us are in the throes of getting our personal fiscal houses in order for the April 15th tax filing deadline. Similarly, at CBE your Officers, Board Members, Clergy and Staff are hard at work on the budget for our 2013-2014 fiscal year, that you will have the opportunity to vote on at our Annual Congre-gational Meeting on June 19th.

Congregations across the country face financial and demo-graphic challenges and CBE is no exception. Our annual dues commitment simply does not cover 100% of our operating expenses. We are addressing this situation in a number of ways. First, in preparing the budget, we strive to balance the goals of maintaining high quality programs and services while at the same time keeping expenses under control. As all of you who have faced similar tasks know, this is not easy and some-times requires making difficult choices. We are guided by your feedback from our Next Dor focus groups as well as by the interactions that we have been fortunate to have with so many of our Congregants. Second, we continue our efforts to secure additional sources of revenues from Members who make volun-tary contributions above dues or gifts to the operating budget, fundraising events and working with Members who desire to make a present day or planned gift to our Endowment to secure the future of the Congregation.

I know that I speak for the lay leadership when I say that we look forward to working with you to ensure the future of our congregational family.

B’Shalom Jill Goodman, president

Thank you to all who generously contributed to our very successful Sisterhood Pajama Party fundraiser for the benefit of the YES Fund.

The Susan B. Shpeen Memorial Donor Dinner will take place on Thursday, May 9th. If you are new to the congregation and this is your first invitation, we look forward to your atten-dance. The dinner is a wonderful way of honoring Susan Shpeen’s memory and supporting Sisterhood programming. The entertainment for the evening will include Rabbi Kenneth Kanter, presenting a musical program in honor of our 175th anniversary and is sponsored by the Rabbi Scott L. Shpeen Distinguished Artist Fund in memory of Susan. Please note that all proceeds from the dinner are earmarked for the youth pro-grams that take place at Beth Emeth. Without the crucial un-derwriting or sponsorship of Sisterhood, these programs could not exist in their current form. These programs include: High Holy Day Children’s Program, Religious School and Tree of Life, The Parenting Center, Shalom Yeladim, CBEYG, College Connection Care Packages, Graduation Gifts to High School Seniors, Religious School Opening Picnic. Please join us for what promises to be a special night.

Thank you also to the Knit n Nosh group, who along with friends, have already completed over 60 knitted items. The group is marking the 100th Anniversary of the Sisterhood of our Congregation with “Knit 100 Project”. Scarves and hats will be donated to the Parson’s Child and Family Center and the lap robes will be given to Daughters of Sarah. Knitters include: Susan Benjamin, Patti Boochever, Lisa Finkle, Marion Greenberg, Sylvia Kessler, Jo Anne Milhausen, Joan Paul, Ellen Reohr, Linda Schechter, Phyllis Silverman, Arleen Stein and Barbara Zaron. The Knit n Nosh Group was originally started by Jo Anne Milhausen. In the past, Knit n Nosh has made shawls for cancer survivors and mittens and scarves for elementary children in Albany. The group is open to all mem-bers of the community. No experience is necessary. Further information may be obtained from Marion Greenberg at [email protected].

The Submission by Amy Waldman will be the book for discussion on April 24th. Set not in 2010 but in 2003, this fiction concerns not a mosque being built in lower Manhattan but a 9/11 memorial. A jury, assembled by the state’s governor, has spent months reviewing architects’ anonymous submissions for a monument to be built on the site of the tragedy. The uproar that follows after a choice is made and the jury discovers, to its alarm, that the architect is a Muslim. Will the reaction of the jury mimic the reaction of our book club members. Join us to hear and participate in what is sure to be a lively discussion.

On May 30th we look forward to a visit by Jan Tramon-tana, author of Standing on the Corner of Lost and Found, our May book group selection.

We will continue to meet over the summer. On June 27th we will discuss Tale of Love and Darkness by Amos Oz. Zeiton by Dave Eggers will be the topic of discussion on August 15th.

We meet from 6:45 p.m.- 8:15 p.m.

What’s Happening in Brotherhood Our members recently distributed Yom Hashoah yellow

candles to each household. Through this year’s candle contri-butions, Beth Emeth Brotherhood has chosen to support the Jewish Foundation for the Righteous. The foundation provides financial support to more than 800 non-Jews who rescued Jews during the Holocaust and preserves their legacy through a national education program. You can learn more about JFR by visiting www.jfr.org. We hope you will return a contribution to Brotherhood with your usual generosity.

Our NCAA Men’s Basketball March Madness semi-finals is Saturday, April 6th at 6 p.m. Great food will be served and this event is free to congregants and their guests. Check the gold flyer for more details and reservations.

The CBE/JCC Health Fair will be on Sunday, April 21st starting at 8:30 a.m. Volunteers are needed to schlep vendor items from the parking lot and lighter work is also available to assist with assembling box lunches. On Memorial Day, Sunday, May 26th, Brotherhood will be marking the graves of our war veterans with American flags. Contact me if you want to volun-teer for either of these events.

Looking ahead toward summer, the Valley Cats vs. Connecticut Tigers baseball game is July 28th. Take advan-tage of this family outing - $25 for adults and $20 for children under 12. Our “Day At The Races” at the Saratoga flat track is planned for August 18th. Flyers are posted on the website and will be included with future mailings.

Tikkun Olam: Healing the World April is an exciting and event filled month for the Social

Action Committee and hopefully the whole congregation as we continue our celebration of the 175th Anniversary.

April 3rd is the First Annual Sister Maureen Joyce Center Dinner where the work of the CBE Social Action Committee will be recognized with an award.

What issues are important to you; to your Reform Jewish values? Come listen; ask questions; learn what we can expect from the 2013 Legislative session. Reform Jewish Voice of New York State (RJV) and the Reform Congregations of the Capital District have invited the NYS Senators and Assembly Members who represent us to participate in a “Candid Conversation” on Sunday April 14, 2013 from 2-4 p.m. at Congregation Gates of Heaven, 852 Ashmore Avenue, Schenectady, NY. RJV is the Reform Jewish Movement’s social justice advocate in New York and promotes state legisla-tion and governmental actions that address the root causes of social and economic injustice and advance religious tolerance and human dignity throughout the state.

April 21-23rd is the RAC Consultation on Conscience in DC. It is a most exciting experiential learning experience.

April 26th is the Social Action Shabbat which you will not want to miss. May 6th is the RJV advocacy day. The May Bulletin will include information about all the grants the Social Action Committee has made this year.

Get involved, have fun and make a difference. Barry Z. Davis, Chairperson

In honor of our 175th Anniversary celebration, I thought it would be fun to pass on some Beth Emeth history factoids . . . * The earliest Jewish Albanian on record, Asser Levy, came to Nieuw Amsterdam from Recife, Brazil in 1654. * A predecessor of Beth Emeth, Temple Beth El was organized in March 1838. Annual membership dues were $6.00. Any trus-tee who missed a board meeting or any member who failed to attend a congregational meeting was fined 50 cents! * Albany’s first rabbi was Isaac Mayer Wise who came to the U. S. from Bohemia in 1846. * Rabbi Wise introduced a number of changes that were not all universally popular. Some of these reforms included his insis-tence on a more orderly and dignified service; introduced a mixed choir that sang German and English hymns; criticized local slaughtering practices and questioned publicly the piety of at least one synagogue official. * On Rosh Hashanah, 1850, the tension between Rabbi Wise and the congregation mounted to the point of physical violence whereby police were called and the synagogue was closed! * Rabbi Wise went on to create a separate temple, Congrega-tion Anshe Emeth – the 4TH OLDEST REFORM CONGREGA-TION IN THE U.S.!!! * December, 1885, the two temples, Beth El and Anshe Emeth merged to form Congregation Beth Emeth. Want to learn more? Please join Rabbi Shpeen on Sunday, April 21st for a conversation about the Reform Movement (which was created by Rabbi Wise) as well as a bus tour of Old Jewish Albany on Sunday, April 28th. We have such a won-derful histoy – please join us in our many celebrations!

Donation drop off times are listed below including evening hours on Monday and Tuesday. Information is also on the web site.

Donation Drop Off Date-Times Sunday, June 2, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. Monday, June 3, 9 a.m. - 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 4, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Donations exclude: major appliances, black & white TVs, large TVs, CRT computer monitors (only LCD monitors accepted), dot matrix printers, old fax machines, tires, mattresses, underwear, swimsuits, infant car seats, or cribs not meeting federal child safety guidelines, magazine collections, encyclopedias, or textbooks. Magazine collections such as “National Geographic” cannot be accepted since these items just do not sell. Sorry, no furniture pickups this year.

Clothing should not have holes, be stained, moldy, musty, or smoky. Items should be washed or cleaned. Please take a little extra time and effort to clean-up your donations and avoid donating junk!!! Bind shoes with rubber bands or lace them together, with the size marked on the sole with magic marker. Please use hangers for clothing where practical since this facilitates the sorting process.

In order for the garage sale to be a success, we need your help. If you have volunteered in the past or have not yet partici-pated, we encourage your involvement. If you have any questions or want to serve on the garage sale committee contact the Temple office or e-mail Margie at [email protected]. Thanks for your continued support.

If You Would Like a Clergy Hospital Visit The Clergy of Beth Emeth take great pride in making

themselves available to the members of our congregation at the time of their pastoral needs.

However, in recent years the realities of hospital visitations have changed dramatically. First, because of the HIPPA Laws, the Temple is only notified of the hospitalization of a member IF the hospital is specifically instructed to do so OR if a family member chooses to inform us. Secondly, the typical length of a hospital stay has decreased significantly and many procedures require a minimal stay if any.

In addition, we understand and fully respect the privacy of our members in that many individuals do not want or require a pastoral visit while hospitalized and, in fact, an unscheduled visit might well interrupt their recuperation, rehabilitation sched-ule or testing procedure.

In light of this, please be reminded that if you are hospital-ized and would, indeed, welcome the visit of a member of our Clergy or are in need of pastoral attention, PLEASE either have the hospital chaplain or nurse be in touch with us (as they can easily do) OR have a relative or friend let us know. The Clergy are not routinely in the hospitals and ONLY make calls upon request because of the aforementioned reasons and out of respect for your privacy.
