In my role as Chairman of the Board of the Palace Theater, I have the pleasure of presiding over this beautiful and valued

performing arts center and watching it grow each year. This year is particularly exciting, as it is our 15th Anniversary year!

Fifteen years ago, a group of dedicated local and state leaders organized to restore and reopen this historic facility. After an extensive renovation, we welcomed our first audience to take in the visual splendors of the theater—and the mellifluous tones of Tony Bennett’s voice.

Over the past fifteen years, we have welcomed close to two million people, held over 1900 events and presentations and served as the premier arts and cultural destination for the Greater Waterbury community and its surrounding towns.

We have achieved a great deal in fifteen years, with still so much opportunity for growth ahead. In addition to serving as a performance venue, a cultural center, a reception facility for special events and a community gathering place, we also serve as the performance home for the Waterbury Arts Magnet School. It is a pleasure to watch the evolution of young performers as they work to hone their craft both on and off stage. And it is gratifying to see their names appear in our playbills, as they pursue careers in theater, and return to their home stage while on tour.

The Palace is still growing, and we are so grateful to have the support of you, our valued patrons. Each time you attend a performance, or provide financial support, you help us further our mission of supporting the cultural and educational needs of our community.

On behalf of the Board and the staff, I thank you, whether you are a 15-year supporter, or a first-time visitor. Welcome to the Palace!

Sincerely,

Peter J. Jacoby, MD, FACEPChairman of the Board

It is with great pleasure that I can announce the 2020-2021 Webster Broadway Series! This upcoming season will be a

richly colored and inspired one, taking us to places like Imperial Russia and modern Israel—with stops across several decades in the U.S.A.! Our goal each year is to create a season that brings the best of Broadway to our community—and, as always, the heart of our Webster Broadway Series is the pairing of these exciting titles with you, our devoted subscribers and patrons.

The 2020-2021 season begins with the popular musical Waitress! Based on the 2007 Indie film of the same name, and filled with Sara Bareilles’ melodious songs, this hilarious and uplifting show reflects on friendship, dreams and love—along with a generous serving of pie!

The Band’s Visit, the 10-time 2018 Tony Award-winning musical, follows an Egyptian band to a small town in Israel, and celebrates the ways in which music crosses boundaries to bring joy and understanding to people of very different backgrounds. The story of The Band’s Visit can serve as an inspiration to us all!

On the heels of this season’s successful production of A Bronx Tale: The Musical, we are bringing the original piece and actor to Waterbury! This non-musical offering is Chazz Palminteri’s one-man show, A Bronx Tale, which is the basis for the film and musical of the same name. Mr. Palminteri brings to life his autobiographical coming of age story in a tour de force performance. If you loved the musical, you’ll be enthralled by his solo performance!

What better way to celebrate our Beautiful Palace than with Beautiful: The Carole King Musical ? Certain to capture our hearts, this superb and joyous production presents the famed singer-songwriter’s life and music as she develops into the voice of a generation.

Next spring, the glorious sights and sounds of Anastasia will transport us from 1916 Russia to 1920’s Paris, as a young woman sets out to solve the mystery of her past. With over a dozen new songs joining those from the animated film version, the show deftly combines adventure, romance and history. This Broadway production originated at Connecticut’s Hartford Stage and we are delighted to bring it here.

Grab your dancing shoes and kick off your summer with Summer: The Donna Summer Musical ! This upbeat, lively show will not only get us ready for the warmer months with its “Hot Stuff” and exuberant music and dancing, but will also bring out the Disco Diva in all of us!

With these and even more offerings to be added to our season soon, we hope that the 2020-2021 Webster Broadway Series will see you back at the Palace, enjoying our Beautiful Season!

Sincerely,

Frank TaveraCEO

MARSHALL BRICKMAN (Book). Films (author or co-author): Sleeper, Annie Hall, Manhattan, Manhattan Murder Mystery, For the Boys, Intersection; (as writer/ director): Simon, Lovesick, The Manhattan Project, Sister Mary Explains It All. Television: “The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson” (head writer), “The Dick Cavett Show” (head writer/co-producer). He has published in The New York Times, The New Yorker, Playboy and other periodicals and was the 2006 recipient of the Writers Guild of America’s Ian McClellan Hunter Lifetime Achievement Award. Jersey Boys, his first venture into musical theatre (with co-author Rick Elice), won four Tony Awards including Best Musical. The Addams Family, his second theatrical venture (also with Rick), ran over 700 performances on Broadway and had national and international tours. Upcoming projects include musicals about Roy Rogers and the Woodstock Festival of 1969.

RICK ELICE (Book) co-wrote Jersey Boys (winner 2006 Tony Award, 2007 Grammy Award and 2009 Olivier Award for Best Musical) with the great Marshall Brickman. His play, Peter and the Starcatcher, won five 2012 Tony Awards and is one of the most produced plays in North America. Also on Broadway: The Addams Family (with Marshall Brickman, music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa) and The Cher Show. Coming soon: The Princess Bride for Disney, with Bob Martin and David Yazbek; Water for Elephants, with the acclaimed theater collective, Pig Pen. Rick’s book, Finding Roger, An Improbably Theatrical Love Story, is published by Kingswell. Heartfelt thanks to those whose work in the theater makes him grateful for the day he was born: Sondheim, Stoppard, Bennett, Prince, Fosse, Robbins, Nichols, Tune, Nunn, Laurents, Stone, Kushner, Taymor,

Papp, Schumacher, Schneider, David, Strong, Gaudio, Valli, McAnuff, Trujillo, Coyne, Brickman, Timbers and, eternally, Roger Rees. Rick thinks about them a lot. He never thought about Jersey much. He does now.

BOB GAUDIO (Composer) wrote his first hit, “Who Wears Short Shorts,” at 15, for the Royal Teens, and then went on to become a founding member of The Four Seasons and the band’s principal songwriter. He also produced the hit “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers” for Neil Diamond and Barbra Streisand (Grammy nomination, Record of the Year) as well as six albums for Diamond, including The Jazz Singer. Other producing credits include albums for Frank Sinatra, Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, Michael Jackson and the soundtrack for the film of Little Shop of Horrors. Several songs co-written with Bob Crewe have been cover hits for such artists as the Tremeloes (“Silence Is Golden”), the Walker Brothers (“The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore”) and Lauryn Hill (“Can’t Take My Eyes Off You”). With his wife, Judy Parker, Gaudio produced and co-wrote the Who Loves You album for The Four Seasons and one of Billboard’s longest-charted singles (54 weeks), “Oh, What a Night.” A high point in his career came in 1990 when, as a member of the original Four Seasons, Gaudio was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 1995, he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, which hailed him as “a quintessential music-maker.” To this day, Bob Gaudio and Frankie Valli still maintain their partnership...on a handshake.

BOB CREWE (Lyricist). “New York was pregnant in the fifties,” says Bob Crewe, “gestating with possibilities.” Crewe and music partner Frank Slay became independent writer-producers when the category hadn’t yet been invented. In 1957, they wrote and produced “Silhouettes” for The Rays, which skyrocketed to #1. Suddenly, producers in demand, they launched Freddie Cannon’s “Tallahassee Lassie” and Billy & Lillie’s “Lah Dee Da.” Crewe’s 1960’s unprecedented producing success with The Four Seasons birthed a new sound, striking a major chord in American pop. “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Walk Like a Man,” “Candy Girl,” “Ronnie”—all smashes! When lead Frankie Valli demanded a solo turn, Crewe and Bob Gaudio wrote (and Crewe produced) “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You,” which eventually became the century’s fifth most-played song. Crewe ran hot with artists from Vicki Carr, Oliver and Lesley Gore to Mitch Ryder, co-writing with Charles Fox the soundtrack for Jane Fonda’s film Barbarella. Then his own Bob Crewe Generation exploded with “Music to Watch Girls By.” In 1972 Bob was in L.A., where he revived Frankie Valli with “My Eyes Adored You” by Crewe and Kenny Nolan. They also co-wrote Patti LaBelle’s “Lady Marmalade” (#1, July ’75), which was a hit again on the soundtrack of Moulin Rouge (#1, June ’01)...David Ritz.
