THE FIRST SUNDAY IN LENT Morning Worship –9:30 a. m.

February 21, 2021

The Lord’s Prayer in verse, by George Wither (1558-1667)

Our Father which in heaven art, We sanctify Thy name;

Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, In heaven and earth the same.

Give us this day our daily bread, And us forgive Thou so,

As we on them that us offend Forgiveness do bestow.

Into temptation lead us not, And us from evil free,

For Thine the Kingdom, Power, and Praise Is and shall ever be.

*CALL TO WORSHIP / PRAYER OF ADORATION (from Psalm 84: 1, 2, 4)

How lovely is Thy dwelling place, O Lord Almighty! MY HEART AND MY FLESH SING FOR JOY TO THE LIVING GOD. Blessed are those who dwell in Thy house; they are ever praising Thee. BETTER IS ONE DAY IN THY COURTS, O LORD, THAN A THOUSAND ELSEWHERE. In the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, LET US WORSHIP GOD!

*+HYMN Break Thou the Bread of Life PRAYER OF CONFESSION (first silently, then in unison):

O GOD, OUR HEAVENLY FATHER, WE ARE EXCEEDINGLY FRAIL, AND NOT DISPOSED TO VIRTUE. FORGIVE OUR SINS, STRENGTHEN OUR WEAKNESS, AND MAKE US VALIANT IN THE SPIRITUAL WAR WE FIGHT WITHIN AND WITHOUT. GUARD US AGAINST OUR OWN NEGLIGENCE AND COWARDICE, AND DEFEND US FROM THE TREACHERY OF OUR UNFAITHFUL HEARTS, FOR THE SAKE OF YOUR SON, OUR SAVIOR, JESUS CHRIST OUR LORD, AMEN.

A prayer of Augustine of Hippo, 354-430

Mark 1:9-13In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And when He came up out of the water, immediately He saw the heavens opened and the Spirit descending on Him like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; in You I am well pleased.”

The Spirit immediately drove Him out into the wilderness. And He was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and the angels ministered to Him.

Matthew 4:1-11Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after fasting forty days and forty nights, He was hungry. And the tempter came and said to Him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become bread.”

But He answered, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” [Deuteronomy 8:3]

Then the devil took Him to the holy city and set Him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down. For it is written, ‘He will command His angels concerning you, and on their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’” [Psalm 91:11-12]

Jesus said to him, “It is also written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” [Deuteronomy 6:16]

Again, the devil took Him to a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to Him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.”

Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God and Him only shall you serve.’” [Deuteronomy 6:16]

Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to Him.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we

forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom

and the power and the glory forever, Amen.

GREENWOOD COMMUNITY CHURCH, PRESBYTERIAN 805 MAIN AVENUE

WARWICK, RHODE ISLAND 02886 February 21, 2021

WELCOME to all who are worshiping in our sanctuary today; welcome, too, to all worshiping with us online! As done the past forty-seven weeks,

the service will be archived and posted @ twenty minutes after the benediction and will be available for viewing and/or downloading for at

least one week. A special word of welcome to any and all visiting with us in person or online this morning … welcome to our fellowship!

FLOWERS TODAY are given to the glory of God by Jim and Elaine Magyar with love and gratitude in memory of Elaine’s parents, Dorothy and Donald Stedman, and by Janet Swanson in loving memory of her brother, David R. Pelley. THE 2021 FLOWER CALENDAR: There are only a few dates available to honor a loved one, mark a special occasion, or commemorate the memory of a dearly departed relative or friend and, in doing so, help beautify our sanctuary for worship. The cost is $15 per bouquet. In light of the current health restrictions, please call (737-1230) to sign up for dates.

PRESBYTERIAN WOMEN’S “GIFTS OF THE HEART” – During February and March we hold our annual collection for the “Gifts of the Heart” kits. A donation box is on the Fellowship Hall stage. Thank you for your continued support of this project! Items needed: 15”x28” hand towels, wash cloths, wide tooth combs, nail clippers, (wrapped) bars of soap, (boxed) toothbrushes.

ONE GREAT HOUR OF SHARING (OGHS) -- The enclosed insert provides an overview of the impact of our OGHS gifts. Since 1949, OGHS is the single, largest way Presbyterians annually come together to work for a better world. Throughout the life of Jesus, He healed the sick, comforted the broken-hearted and preached Good News to the poor. The three programs supported by OGHS (Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, Presbyterian Hunger Program, Self-Development of People) all work to serve individuals and communities in need. From initial disaster response to ongoing community development, they provide needy people with safety, sustenance, and hope. Please use the OGHS offering envelopes at the sanctuary entryways, in your box of offering envelopes or the OGHS online account for your donation. THANK YOU FROM YOUR MISSION COMMITTEE!

WORSHIP CANCELLATION NOTIFICATION: For up to date information regarding the potential cancellation of church activities during inclement weather, please log on to www.wpri.com or www.turnto10.com, tune in to the corresponding TV stations, look us up on Face Book (Greenwood Community Church, Presbyterian) … and/or call the church office answering machine.

TODAY is normally the start of our annual Lenten coin drive to benefit Heifer International. All funds raised through this drive enable the Sunday School to purchase domestic animals for impoverished families worldwide. The purchase of these animals will help feed families as well as generate income for them through the sale of eggs, cheese, milk, wool and other animal byproducts. Last year the pandemic restrictions discontinuing in-person worship commenced the third week of Lent, but several of you continued to direct special contributions to compensate the anticipated loss of coin income. Some brought coins to the office, others wrote checks for the value of the coins they had, and still others simply made designated donations … and through your generosity we received just about the exact amount as in 2018 (and just a bit less than the record amount received 2019). Under current protocols we will NOT have the children collecting these coins during the service of worship as in years past, but we will continue this annual appeal (which I think began seventeen years ago … I’m still checking to verify that!). You may leave your bagged coins in the offering plate, bring them to the office, or designate a donation by check and send it to the church office.

TODAY – PENNIES, FEBRUARY 28 – NICKELS, MARCH 7 – DIMES, MARCH14 – QUARTERS, MARCH 21 – DOLLARS.
