“Not charity, but a chance. It believes more in the prevention than a cure. That’s what a job does, it

prevents…Work greatly enhances the morale of those who help themselves and others by their labor in

our industries.” Rev. Edgar J. Helms, Founder of Goodwill Industries, 1936.

Friends and Supporters,

Goodwill Industries of Northwest Ohio continues to build on the entrepreneurial spirit of our founder,

Reverend Edgar J. Helms. 2016 was a very exciting year for our organization as Board and staff worked

diligently together; developing a new strategic plan. The plan titled, “Driving Forward Through

Enhancement and Innovation” steers Goodwill through future years of growth in order to fulfill our

mission of empowering people with disabilities or other disadvantages.

Throughout 2016 we experienced a great depth of community outreach through the distribution of over

530 clothing vouchers to area non-profits. In partnership with 13abc, The Pass it on Challenge area high

school donation drive had its most successful year yet raising more than 138,000 pounds of donated

material. We were awarded a $1.4 million “Training to Work” federal grant. The purpose of this grant is to

serve 170 residents released from incarceration find employment in building trades or receive advanced

manufacturing training.

As we bid farewell to Goodwill’s longtime President/CEO Bob Huber, we welcomed Amy Wachob as the

new leader. We hope our work in 2016 and beyond will inspire you to see Goodwill in a new and exciting

way. With community support and through growing partnerships, we intend to move forward to combat

issues such as joblessness, generational poverty and barriers to employment.

Continued support from you, our partners and friends, donors and shoppers, is essential in advancing our

mission. We could not do this work without you. Thank you for your continued support and for Believing

in the Power of Work.

Proudly serving Northwest Ohio since 1933

2016 Employee of the Year

Joann was awarded Goodwill Industries of Northwest Ohio’s 2016 Employee of the Year! This award is giv-

en to a Team Member who “most embodies the spirit of Goodwill and its mission”. Joann was referred to

Goodwill by Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities. After battling life’s obstacles for many years, Joann

was ready for a transformational change. She enrolled in Goodwill’s training programs and gained the skills

necessary to find and retain a job. She is currently the afternoon custodian at the Cherry St. facility and she

quickly found that she was ready for the next step. With assistance from Goodwill staff, Joann enrolled at

The Source where she is taking GED and college prep classes. Her career pathway is to one day become a

certified technician in the heating/cooling industry.

When asked what Goodwill means to Joann, her reply was, “I like what Goodwill stands for, helping people

move ahead to know that they are valuable”. Joann further stated that Goodwill helped her to gain back

her confidence and has strengthened her personal relationships because, “people see that I am putting

effort into my life”.

Goodwill Industries of Northwest Ohio, Inc. has a community outreach program titled CORE. We help schools

introduce students with disabilities to the world of employment.

Mathew and his classmates came to Goodwill two years ago. His physical ability was restricted to moving his head

left or right. CORE developed an adaptive device to sort donated products by sending them into bags on the left or

right. Mathew operated the device by hitting targets with a laser pointer mounted on a headband. He worked very

hard and participated alongside his classmates. The effort was instantly rewarding to everyone involved. Mathew

became an active contributing team member. The comradery was contagious.

That was last school year. This school year it was different. When Mathew returned with his classmates we

discovered he no longer possessed the ability to point the laser. The CORE program got into gear and created a new

adaptive devise that augmented the “laser pointer” as it became known. New infrared switches were installed

monitoring the slightest movement by Mathew. It worked! We don’t know what next year will bring, but we do

know puzzles can be solved with some creativity and perseverance. We also know fostering inclusion brings many

rewards.

Goodwill Industries of Northwest Ohio, Inc. has a re-entry program titled Building the Future. We help

returning citizens obtain the necessary training and life skills to obtain meaningful employment.

Rebecca enrolled with Building the Future in 2016 while residing at Ohio Link (Alvis House). She

completed the Math Refresher course and toured the Carpenters/Millwright/Floorlayers later in the

year. After careful consideration of all trades, she applied to the Painters’ Apprenticeship Program. In

preparation, Building the Future Program provided her with steel toe work boots, resumé building and

job readiness skills along the way. She also was matched with a Mentor whom she is in regular contact

with.

Rebecca was hired at Lakeside Interiors, joined the union and stated that none of this would have been

possible without the help of Goodwill and the Building the Future Program.

NaKayla came to Goodwill lacking confidence and self-assurance but wanted to work hard to find em-ployment in the community. After working with Goodwill employment specialists, NaKayla became more confident and resilient in her search for employment. She is now extremely proud of her efforts and has been hired by the Toledo Zoo as a staff member in concessions.

“Goodwill taught me to be more confident in myself, keep advancing, and never give up my search for employment. They showed me how to fill out an application, how to answer interview questions, every-thing,” said, NaKayla. “I love my job, because I’m able to make friends and look forward to going to work each day. Thank you Goodwill for all you have done for me!”

Goodwill is extremely proud of NaKayla and looks forward to helping her advance in her career!
