From the Director ofResident Care,Christa Giraldo

Make your own recovery thefirst priority.

It’s time to celebrate April asNational Occupational TherapyMonth. Occupational Therapy(OT) helps people across thelifespan participate in the thingsthey want and need to do throughthe therapeutic use of everydayactivities. OT helps peoplerecovering from injury to regainskills and provides supports forolder adults experiencing physical

and cognitive changes. OTtypically includes an individualevaluation to determine the goals, intervention to improve theperson’s ability to perform dailyactivities, and outcomesevaluation to ensure that the goalsare being met and/or makechanges to the intervention plan.

Falls are the leading cause ofinjury in adults over the age of 65.Clutter and other trippinghazards, poor balance, anddistractions can all cause a personto stumble and fall. Some peoplebecome so afraid of falling thatthey stop doing the things theyused to enjoy. An occupationaltherapy practitioner uses yourdaily activities as the basis oftherapy to help ensure that youcan safely do the things you wantand need to do.

Your mental, physical, andemotional well-being is importantto the Belmont Village family!

Cesar Gonzalez,Congratulations!

Employee of the MonthCesar was born in LA and raised in Mexico

City along with his sister, Abby, who is a PALhere at Belmont. Cesar used to travel often andenjoyed visiting various lakes. With all thatlakes had to offer, he couldn’t understand whypeople would waste their time fishing. NowCesar travels less and, ironically, one of hisfavorite pastimes is fishing off the Santa MonicaPier! Don’t knock it until you try it! Cesarenjoys working with his crew in the kitchen. Weall enjoy working with you, Cesar, good job!

Is OccupationalTherapy Month

Rachelle Goodrich, YourOccupational TherapistHello, Belmont Village

residents! I am an OccupationalTherapist and I met many of youlast year while working hereduring the summer. It feels greatto be back! It’s been wonderful tosee the Belmont Village “family”grow, and I am happy to see somany familiar residents walkingin the halls.

To tell you more about myself,I was born and raised here inVentura County. I always knew Iwanted to work in a creative,service-oriented profession, andwhen I learned about

Occupational Therapy I knew itwas right for me. I began mystudies at Ventura and OxnardColleges before getting myBachelor of Health Science andMaster of Occupational Therapydegrees from Loma LindaUniversity in 2007. Since then Ihave worked primarily inoutpatient settings with clientsdiagnosed with neurological, developmental and medicaldiseases. From children withdevelopmental delays, to adultswith complex brain injuries, Ihave been able to work with somany interesting individuals! While I have enjoyed these variedexperiences, working with thesenior population has been themost rewarding for me. I lovelistening to my clients’ storiesfrom their younger years and, more importantly, working toimprove their quality of life.Specifically, I assist our residentsin becoming independent withtheir activities of daily living (e.g.dressing, bathing, etc.), improvingtheir safety both in their homeand in the community, andhelping them find satisfying andmeaningful activities(occupations) for their lives.

On a personal note, I lovecooking, reading and traveling tonew places. I am also having agreat time planning my Junewedding to my fiancé, Derek!
