Our story

Our firm has a long, proud history of serving the businesses, people and broader communities of Newcastle and Sydney. Our expert staff carries on the firm’s traditions of providing quality advice and personalised service.

Archibald Aloysius Rankin establishes offices to provide legal services principally for mining, shipping, manufacturing and steel industries. Rankin was an active advocate for the development of Newcastle as an industrial city. He was highly respected as a solicitor and for his services to health. He was Chairman of Royal Newcastle Hospital and awarded a CBE.

Alfred Owen Ellison establishes AO Ellison and Co in Sydney. The firm assists NSW manufacturers and begins its defendant’s litigation practice for businesses being prosecuted for breaches of industrial safety legislation. In 1933 it establishes an insurance litigation practice.

Donald Neil Rankin joins his father and Alfred Shirlow Nathan in the Newcastle partnership – Rankin and Nathan.

Rankin and Nathan’s principal office is Newcomen House. The historic building was the Rankin family home from 1912 to 1974.

Our community

We help the local community through sponsorships, donations and charity fundraising.

Rankin Ellison’s charity golf days have raised almost $200,000. The golf days benefit a range of charities including Hunter Melanoma Foundation and Calvary Mater Newcastle.

We are a major sponsor of every Pink Frangipani Ball. This biennial ball raises funds for cancer research and cancer support services in honour of a young mother who died from breast cancer at age 29.

Our estate planning team provides a significant amount of no cost work through its voluntary education of community groups, hospitals, retirement villages and senior citizens’ organisations.
