The Heck Family PicnicIt’s not too early to start thinking about our fam-ily picnic scheduled for Sunday, July 17, 2005,at the Leisure Center in Racine, Wisconsin. Thisyear will mark the 39th consecutive family pic-nic which began in 1966. The family actually gottogether earlier than that as is evidenced by somehome movies taken at Brown’s Lake, Burlington,Wisconsin, in 1948. In 1949 the picnic was heldin my parent’s backyard which was also capturedon movie film.

The Polio epidemic put the kabosch on picnicsstarting in 1950. Many of us still remember thefear that we had during the early 1950’s. Swim-ming at public pools, a public beach on LakeMichigan, and inland lakes was pretty much for-bidden. Kids played in their own neighborhoodand rarely strayed into adjacent neighborhoods.Everyone knew of at least one person living in aniron lung or walking with crutches or leg braces. It was a scary time to be growing up. There wasno vaccine to prevent polio although many re-searchers were tracking down the dreaded dis-ease. Doctor Jonas Salk was unknown to thegeneral public until several years later.

Cel Heck and her family will be sending out re-minders about the picnic along with a list ofthings to bring. You can call Cel Heck at (262)639-5370 or Shirley Heck at (262) 681-9427 fordetails or questions.

We hope to see you at the picnic this year andevery year.

George J. HenningfeldIn the December, 2001, Issue 35 of this newslet-ter I wrote an article about my Great UncleGeorge J. Henningfeld. Uncle George, as he wascalled, was the younger brother of MargaretHenningfeld Heck. He was a Fireman in the Cityof Racine. I found an article in the OshkoshDaily Northwestern Newspaper dated December23, 1920, that I thought would be of interest toour readers. Here is the article:

“Company Officials Hurt In DisputeOver Workman’s Wages.”

“Racine – Three company officials injured is thetoll of casualties that resulted when Joseph Gur-sky, an employee of the J. I. Case Plow worksbecame dissatisfied with his wages and enteredinto an argument with W. J. Edwards, Superin-tendent. Edwards was struck over the left eyewith a steel wrench, his head being cut open; In-spector Gouley sustained an injured arm andother bruises; Foreman Gus Keller has an injuredshoulder while George Henningfeld, a checker, was struck over the head with a wagon stake andbadly cut. The latter three came to Edward’s res-cue. Gursky and his father were arrested.”

It seems that Uncle George had a knack for ge t-ting hurt on the job. On October 2, 1941, an arti-cle appeared in the Sheboygan Press. Here is thearticle:

“Five Racine Firemen Hurt By Explo-sion”“Racine – Five firemen were injured today whena gasoline stove at the home of Harry Petersenexploded. Summoned when the stove set fire tothe kitchen, firemen had extinguished the kitchenblaze and were attempting to put out the fire inthe stove when it exploded.Fireman Harry Schaumberg, 46, was hurledthrough the kitchen screen door into the yard, and knocked unconscious. Hospital authoritiessaid he and Capt. Thorvald Christpherson, 52,were suffering from severe burns and shock.Fireman Earl Hanson, 41, George Johnson, 42,and George Henningfeld, 57, were treated forsuperficial burns. Members of the Petersen fam-ily escaped injury.”

Uncle George was thrown off of a fire truck onApril 7, 1946 and sustained a serious head injuryas a result. He was in a coma for several daysfollowing the accident. He was 62 years old atthe time of the accident, and retired as disabledat that time.
